Everyone has chosen Greece this year.

I realise it’s a perennially popular holiday spot but literally everyone seems to have to Greece this year. This includes my lots of friends who normally do France or Europe, work mates ( from both jobs ) and just people who I talk to in shops and dog walks.

One year everyone seemed to do France and after that it’s was all Croatia.
Just me or goes Greece seem to be having a moment?

I noticed Crete seems to have been popular over the last couple of years.

hopeishere · 15/08/2023 17:59

I was thinking this too!!

Notimeforaname · 15/08/2023 18:28

I love Greece, heading off in a week! Obviously millions of people visit every year but I'm a little devastated its getting even more popular!

Shitzngiggles · 15/08/2023 18:28

We've always gone to the Greek Islands. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

PeggyPoggle · 15/08/2023 18:37

Everyone seems to be going to Kefelonia this year!

GettingStuffed · 15/08/2023 18:39

Our children went to Greece from birth to about 11 when we went to Turkey
. Hoping to go next year

UndercoverCop · 15/08/2023 18:40

I've been going to the Greek islands for more than twenty years, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Once you've been it's hard to find somewhere comparable, with the landscape, beaches , history, culture, amazing food and such warm family friendly people, particularly short haul. We still go to lots of other places too, but Greece is like a comfort blanket.

Notimeforaname · 15/08/2023 18:48

Greece is like a comfort blanket.

This is exactly the feeling!! What a lovely way to put it😄

I always thought I never wanted to be the type of person who went back to the same country all the time but there are just so many amazing and different islands as well as the mainland.

We had a summer holiday elsewhere in 2021 and I absolutely hated myself for missing out that year.
How the fuck did I expect Gran bloody Canaria to compare?
I mean its grand as a destination, I'd been before but not for the big summer holiday. Felt like I was cheating on Greece.

itsgettingweird · 15/08/2023 18:51

Cost?!

I was looking earlier in the year and whereas I could easily get a week HB in Spain for £1300 previous years the cheapest were £2.

Greece remained very much the same as previous years so I'm wondering if people have swapped countries for equal price?

I would imagine it's the same reason you get destinations lots of people head to each year.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/08/2023 18:55

We usually go to Greece (Cyclades) but this year we went back to Croatia. I felt like I was betraying Greece 😂

Also love Italy and Spain for shorter breaks.

HalloumiLuvver · 15/08/2023 18:57

Everyone I know seems to be in Turkey on all inclusive this year! I assume costs have a lot to do with it.

Probably.
I thought Turkey was gaining popularity but I think it’s always perceived as a bit risky.
I didn’t think Greece has done any extra marketing so just surprised everyone seems to be going this summer.

Why not? Lovely fresh organic food, friendly people, they all speak some English, practically no cars on the roads (where we go), stunning scenery, Classical remains (I did Classics), great weather (in May and September)…..We’ve been to the same place 4 x since 2018, and only Covid put us off going the other years!

We love Italy for the food and Roman remains; but it’s more crowded, driving on the roads is awful and it’s more expensive…..

coxesorangepippin · 15/08/2023 19:08

Dbro paid £5.5 k.for ten nights in Turkey... Doesn't seem cheap??

Yeah this!

Tourist numbers are massively up in Greece generally, with Brits playing a large role.

We were there last summer and all the locals we chatted with said they’d never seen it so busy. I imagine it’s the same this year.

(Article from earlier this year, but I saw the same general point made a few weeks ago in an article discussing overcrowding at the Acropolis).

I love Greece, been going forever, twice a year, dsis lives on Crete, I went over in June and I'm off again next week.
I don't stay with dsis but at the local resort.
Great weather, 4 hr flight, lovely people, beautiful part of the world, what's not to love!

mcmooberry · 15/08/2023 19:25

You are right, I and everyone I know practically are going to Greece or have been this year.

topnoddy · 15/08/2023 19:26

Jaywick for me !

Comedycook · 15/08/2023 19:27

Actually just thinking...I know four families who have gone to Greece or Greek islands this year...maybe you're right.

We went to Majorca.... only about two other British families in our hotel. Everyone else was German.

backtogrey · 15/08/2023 19:43

We usually do France but went to Crete this year😂

Which end of the island? We prefer Chania side, but I've always wanted to visit Spinalonga which is too far to drive in a tiny hire car!
Any recommendation for the eastern side would be lovely. We like quieter places
Thanks

midsomermurderess · 15/08/2023 19:46

I’m off to Epirus in a fortnight. I think I’ve made a good choice.

We went to Elounda. You can get a boat to Spinalonga from there. It was a quiet little town, with some lovely restaurants on the water.

We're going back to Greece this year. Went for the first time in ages last year. Apart from the amazing scenery, beaches and food, will admit that cost was a big draw - was noticeably cheaper to eat out than in France, Portugal or the Balearics.
