Rhodes next week - are we mad?

We’re due to go to Rhodes next Wednesday for a week. Staying in an all insclusive on the east coast with a 6 year old. Lots of pools, air conditioned rooms and on the beach. Are we mad?

People we know have just returned from Rhodes today and say it’s much hotter than is being reported in the press/on forecasts.

Will we be ok as long as we stay in the resort, by the pool and inside during the hottest parts of the day?

You should be OK if you keep well hydrated, stay in the shade or in air conditioned environments during the heat of the day. I'm guessing you can't cancel now as you would lose the cost of the holiday.

HappiDaze · 15/07/2023 18:43

You'll be fine just nap after lunch in your A/C room and swim later in the sea or pool

SamW98 · 15/07/2023 18:47

We stayed in Lindos in august one year and it was the hottest place I’ve been in my life and we were travelling with a 5 year old.

We kept him and us smothering in sunscreen, spent a lot of time in the pool (which was like a warm bath), stayed in shade for hottest periods and we ate late (10pm most nights)

You'll he fine just be careful and enjoy

Just got back from Rhodes. It was ok as long as you stay in the pool or sea , have regular shade breaks and have an a/c break in the middle of the day. Above 35 it started to feel unpleasant even so - but i think the forecast is a little lower than that for next week, mostly? Mealtimes were sometimes tricky as eating areas are all outside and it was hot and sticky even under shade, unless there was a breeze. Hope your AI has an air con dining room or a breezy outdoor eating area. If you are planning to use a kids club check the activities have been thought through for the heat (ie are in water or an a/c room).

Thanks. As far as I can see from the photos the restaurants all sound as your describe - semi open-air. We’ve never been to an AI before - do they let you take your food back to your room to eat?

We’re going to Southern Spain next week.
Loads of sun cream, hats, rash vests.
We’ll sit in shade, have a siesta in air con every day and spend a lot of time in the pool.

NumberSeven7 · 16/07/2023 09:12

I think my biggest concern is getting out of the air conditioned plane onto the tarmac in 40 degree heat. I’ve heard the airport isn’t air conditioned and I don’t know if the buses from the plane to the terminal are air conditioned.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 16/07/2023 17:26

We land at 9pm which should help

PrimalLass · 16/07/2023 17:28

It's saying 33 for next week, which is the same as Mallorca, where we are just now, and that feels ok to be honest.

PrimalLass · 16/07/2023 17:28

Oh I take that back - BBC says 37/38 for two days.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/07/2023 17:32

We're going Egypt on tuesday for 3 weeks.
Shade, aircon and drinks and we'll be fine.

evtheria · 16/07/2023 17:39

We did France last year, it hit 37-40 each day and we were out in the boondocks with no pool and no aircon or fans!

Pack a LOT of fun activities, books, and preload your iPad for your child in case you just want to hide in your room. It's alright having a pool but still quite risky to be outside in that kind of heat day after day, especially if you're not used to it. I'd stick to kid in pool early morning, v late afternoons. Bring a proper water bottle each from home, so you can track how much you're drinking.
Don't buy those teeny handheld, battery-operated fans, we brought those to Bangkok last month (39° several days) and they did f all - meanwhile the locals carried slightly larger ones that can fold to stand up on their own. I've linked similar below.

Have a good holiday!

Brk · 16/07/2023 20:01

We’re nearby. The heat is awful and has definitely spoiled our holiday BUT it is not as doom and gloom as the british press make it sound.

If you can get a refund and go in autumn instead, do! But if not, go in holiday and adjust your behaviour a bit. Watersports are fine, beach ok as long as you keep drinking water and keep popping into water to cool down. Waterparks great. Anything indoors in aircon is fine. But anything outdoors not by the water, between 10-3pm, basically sucks, we have spent a lot of time on devices in our room, or sitting around in indoor cafes, which is why I say if you can change your dates, do try to. If you can manage to siesta and stay up later obviously that helps.

And the met office forecast is even hotter (and generally more reliable)!

I ordered one of those fans and it arrived today. Seems pretty good. I’ve also got a couple of insulated water bottles arriving tomorrow.

I’m going the week after, I’m hoping it’s cooled a bit by then.

DazedandConcerned · 16/07/2023 21:16

I have loads of friends who live on Rhodes and I visit a few times a year. I’ve been told it is very hot - but - fine. They just don’t recommend moving around much. Acropolis in Lindos has been shut the last two days.

Biggest advice would be to avoid lindos while it’s so warm. The place is a heat trap.

Where on the island are you staying? Some parts are cooler than others.

cherrieduck · 16/07/2023 21:58

I presume you are not very well travelled?

We’re staying at the Atlantica Aegean blue, so just up the coast from Lindos. We have no plans to attempt any trips sadly. I was really looking forward to seeing the accropolis.

😂 thanks for your helpful comment. I’ve actually travelled more than most but I don’t tend to travel to hot countries at the height of summer because I don’t like the heat. I certainly wouldn’t opt to travel during the worst heat wave in history.

tintable · 16/07/2023 22:20

We went to Pefkos years ago, pre children.

It was hotter than the surface of the sun. We holiday a lot and I swear this place was a furnace.

We are currently in mainland Spain with two very young DC. Follow all of the above advice - swimming pools, hats, air con, shade, hydrate, suncream etc.

If you love heat then it will be amazing. I do like heat but not to the extent that my insides are boiled 😅

kiwivick87 · 16/07/2023 22:25

My son arrived in Rhodes yesterday and he hasn’t been in contact…he is with his GF ,but am sure he would send me a moany message if it’s too bad 😂

Piccalillies · 16/07/2023 22:27

We went to the Atlantica Aegean Blue a few years ago in 40 degree heat. I am pretty sure the main restaurant is air conditioned, as was most of the hotel but the Greek restaurant wasn't and that was unbearably hot the night we ate there.

Thanks for the tip! We will avoid the Greek restaurant. Any other intel about the hotel or local area would be much appreciated.

Have you been able to speak to the Travel Agent, to see if they are allowing customers to postpone due to the circumstances? I expect based on previous experience, they won’t. Should you decide to cancel, I doubt whether you could get a refund or claim on insurance, unless Government FCO issue an unsafe to travel notice. Unfortunately, these type of things fall under disinclination to travel.

If I was in your position, I would go, as you have air con, All inclusive so you can have soft drinks all day. Can cool off in the pool, take hand held battery fans, cool packs.

have a lovely holiday OP.
