If your only holiday all year was ten days in October, where would you go?

There is NOT a huge amount of money to spend on this. Unfortunately I have a husband and 2 kids (3 and 5) in tow too. Any ideas?

Lake District does it for me.

Wrap up warm/waterproofs whatever the weather and go out on the hills/by the water everyday. Take a packed lunch and no money spent (beyond accomodation) all week.

We went last year and my DS's (who were 3 & 5 ) can't wait to go back. They spent hours running in endless space, clamberring accross rocks, padding in streams and throwing stones in water falls. Simple pleasures and what children should be doing with their free time IMO.

Lilliput · 25/02/2008 16:41

Mmmmmm, sounds good but we in rural Scotland and do quite a bit of that already.

If you have enough money to fly and can go out of school times (looks at ages of dcs) then Spain, weather can still be nice. Sea too cold to swim in, but lots to do still.

ROSEgarden · 25/02/2008 16:47

Cyprus, we got very good deal for end of sept(free child places) although i dont know how much you want/can spend this cost just over £800 and then its just the spends while youre there..we're going to nissi bay, about an hours walk from aiya napa, lots to do and nothing like people say, beautiful beaches and very friendly, not alll clubbibg and gangs, we went in aug last year, peak week and was fab

alternativly, centerparcs is fab any time of year and you will get a good deal if you can go through school time?

Lilliput · 25/02/2008 16:50

Cyprus sounds good. I REALLY can't do centreparcs again. I think having been 3 times already and my eldest is only 5 is enough.

needahand · 25/02/2008 16:53

Went to Cyprus last year in October (aya napa) and to Lanzarote the year before also in october. Both were lovely, very relaxing and warm (and dare I say probably cheaper than Centre Parks)

Jennster · 25/02/2008 17:11

Went to Lanzarote first week of November last year and was lovely weather.

PortAndLemon · 25/02/2008 17:14

Canaries, perhaps, or Cyprus (see these are popular suggestions).

bookwormmum · 25/02/2008 17:16

Croatia or Slovenia have wonderful beach resorts. You might also want to look at Malta (bit of a longer flight tho). it's not all old people on sticks there, people speak english and they drive on the left - madly though. I went there last Nov/Dec and it was still warm then - I was wearing summer clothes! i think they've adopted the euro now but it was pretty cheap for things when I was there.

rookiemater · 25/02/2008 17:19

Is it the start of October? If so I'd recommend flying to Nice and staying somewhere round there although not Nice itself. Some lovely villas available on cheznous.com and outside of school holidays they are reduced, weather generally warm enough to sit outside although not sun bathing weather.

orangina · 25/02/2008 17:24

What about Egypt? The Red Sea?

pointydog · 25/02/2008 17:35

I'd go wherever I'd go at any time of year. Do you mean you wan tto go somehere warm?

Lilliput · 25/02/2008 17:42

Yes, I think so. I live in the west of scotland where it rains A LOT, so some good weather would be great. Is it warm enough to swim in the pools in Lanzarote or cyrus in October.

Was lovely in April and the pool was ok for swimming but prob better in October.

I loved Cyprus,food was delish!!!

Hi Lilliput

The problem with most of the Med - Greece, Spain, Croatia etc. - that time of year is that it can be lovely but it can be very changeable at that time of year as well so you might find it a bit wet and windy. We've experienced both types of weather in the same area of southern Spain in mid October.

If you go a bit further south, the good weather is much more guaranteed, so I'm seconding both Lanzarote and the Red Sea. I think Cyprus could also work but have never been myself.

Lanzarote absolutely does not deserve its Lanzagrotty reputation! It's always a pleasant temperature, there are some absolutely gorgeous sandy beaches for you and the kids, the volcanic landscape is stunning and fun to see, and it's really quick and easy to drive all over the island to visit different resorts, beaches etc. For a bit more activity, there are some lovely easy walks you can do as a family e.g. along the beach at Famara which has amazing cliffs. I think the nicest resort is probably Playa Blanca in the south and this is near some gorgeous beaches such as Papagayo.

I also second the Red Sea in Egypt. Sharm el Sheikh is a nice resort - purpose built, so doesn't really have much character, but done very nicely with lots of pedestrianised areas etc. You can get some great deals to lovely hotels there, and there is loads to do for the whole family. If you all like swimming then the snorkelling is truly amazing and even though loads of people go there to go diving, you can see as much sealife just by snorkelling (I can vouch for this as I was stuck just snorkelling at Christmas due to being 6 months pregnant and saw more stuff than DH who was diving!) You don't have to go on boat trips to do this - just stick your head under the water from the beach and you will see truly amazing things! - so it's something all the family can do. You can also do activities in the desert which your kids would probably enjoy such as camel rides.

Hope that helps!

I have been to Spain in October and the weather was GORGEOUS - swimming pool weather and great for sightseeing, in fact a lot better than in the real summer months.

TotalChaos · 25/02/2008 19:27

Sicily or Southern Italy.

ROSEgarden · 25/02/2008 19:56

by october the pool/ocean/ground has been constantly heated at 40 degres throughout the summer so i more likely to be warmerb than early in the year.....McDreamy lives in Cyprus, you could shout out for her she could advize?..when we went in aug last year it said 38 degrees it was actually more towards 45..in brochure it says 30 in sept/oct, so even at THAT it would /will be fab

Janni · 25/02/2008 20:01

Crete is lovely in October and eminently suitable for small children.

DiscoDizzy · 25/02/2008 20:03

Potentially Portugal, Canaries (tho I wouldn't) or Egypt.

seb1 · 25/02/2008 20:03

Lilliput try flyglobepsan out of Glasgow airport quite reasonable.

ROSEgarden · 25/02/2008 20:06

where would you be flying from?

DiscoDizzy · 25/02/2008 20:06

I agree with flyglobespan. We're travelling with them in May when we go to Ibiza, they were the cheapest and had the most reasonable flight times by far (despite Glasgow being 3 hours away)
