Is it still possible to get last minute deals?

I know years ago you could literally turn up at an airport and get a holiday. I'm not thinking that last minute but we have sent off my children's passports off for renewal and if they come back in time we are hoping we could possibly do a last minute deal? But I'm not sure if that's possible these days?
Has anyone booked anything last minute before?

Many thanks in advance.

The travel agent says, there doesn't tend to be last minute bargains like there use to be. She said she's never known it so busy and travel hadn't been affected by the financial crisis which surprised me.

There haven't been for years apart from 20/21.
If you wait to last minute you will get little choice and will be left with unsocial hours flights and the hotels no-one else wants. The best hotels get booked early, the best flights get booked first. It tends to get more expensive the nearer departure even outside school holidays.

I wanted to book a holiday in Feb, not half term. For various reasons I couldn't book. I watched the prices from November to Feb and they just went up. I did get what I wanted but it cost me £100s more than if I had booked 3 months earlier.
