Is it still possible to get last minute deals?

I know years ago you could literally turn up at an airport and get a holiday. I'm not thinking that last minute but we have sent off my children's passports off for renewal and if they come back in time we are hoping we could possibly do a last minute deal? But I'm not sure if that's possible these days?
Has anyone booked anything last minute before?

Many thanks in advance.

@Yoyoyo1 I used Cruise Nation. They favour MSC which is one of the cheaper lines ( really good ships though) I’ve been looking for this year too but I missed the MSC free drinks package they had until June 30th so I’m kicking myself.

I haven’t looked at P&O but they did cheap last minute cruises previously in the school holidays.

Jet2 got some good offers at the moment and EasyJet holidays often have discount codes.
There definitely aren’t the deals like the old days.
Me and the ex used to book tIme off work then scroll through teletext about a fortnight before - that’s just aged me 😀

I used Teletext too. Early 2000s got an amazing cheap holiday to Mykonos staying where Shirley Valentine was filmed, before the island became popular with the rich.

I've not tried last minute with children though, due to wanting decent flight times.

if you download the holiday pirates app they have some really good deals
good luck have a great holiday wherever you go

Thanks everyone. Really good deals to Rhodes lots of them, think that could be due to the heatwave. Not looking to go for 2/3 more weeks going to leave a little longer and risk it.
Couldn't believe passports took a week to come back!

Interested to know what you are looking at to find the good deals @Aqua82 ?

I was looking for a just a couple of nights beach break and for three people it was still over £1500 ......

Oblomov23 · 17/07/2023 10:03

You can still get cheap flights, £9 or £19 to all Italian cities I found for ds1 last year. And £36 return. So not bad!

Yoyoyo1 · 17/07/2023 11:06

Anyone?

Babyluigi · 17/07/2023 11:17

Olympic holidays used to have some great late deals, but I haven't checked for a while. We did go to Rhodes for 2 weeks with them for £199 pp a few years ago in July. And iglucruise are good for last minute cruise deals too if you're flexible

We've just booked to go to Rhodes in 18 days. £1500 for 4 for a week with Jet2.
Accommodation looks basic but reviews are good and we just wanted a bit of sunshine, which there seems to be plenty of.

Yoyoyo1 · 17/07/2023 19:33

Thank you

Yoyoyo1 · 17/07/2023 19:33

We're looking for a holiday in August for 4

tintable · 17/07/2023 19:34

Absolutely. We are currently in Valencia which was booked in advance but we went to Salou two weeks ago and got a jet2 package deal for £1020 for a week for a family of four for flights, luggage, transfers and accommodation. We booked it two days before. Best holiday we've ever been on.

Sometimes they go up if you leave it too close as the companies think you're desperate.

Picking when to book is an art form Grin

Assuming the passport comes back you will definitely be able to go somewhere but I would not hold out hope for much of a “deal” this summer.

chopc · 17/07/2023 22:53

@tintable could I ask which site you looked at and what you put in your search engine?

BabsDylan · 17/07/2023 23:49

@tintable you’d recommend Salou then?

TheChosenTwo · 18/07/2023 09:10

We sent a couple of passports off a few weeks ago and had the new ones posted through our letterbox within 7 days, we were really impressed.
We also booked our flights to Portugal then, for the 5 of us we paid about £800 which we were shocked by, I anticipated paying double that! We had our accommodation sorted a while ago and that was not a bargain at all so I can’t help you there. But the flights were cheap! We used sky scanner, the ones we booked weren’t the cheapest available, the times just suited us best.

They came back in just over a week, couldn't believe it! We renewed them online.

The travel agent says, there doesn't tend to be last minute bargains like there use to be. She said she's never known it so busy and travel hadn't been affected by the financial crisis which surprised me.

It's Sod's Law for me, often see last minute deals on the likes of Holiday Pirates when I'm not able to go, then when I'm able and looking can never find anything good!

BabsDylan · 24/07/2023 14:19

I’m having no luck either 🤷‍♀️

We’d like to go self catering and they seem quite rare.

3luckystars · 24/07/2023 14:21

My sister told me a lot of people have cancelled their holidays this year because of the extreme heat. You might get a bargain.

I am not able for the heat and never have been, so this year would be out of the question for me, even if it was free.

I remember their being last minute offers on teletext!

UtterlyBeastly · 24/07/2023 14:24

We booked with Tui on Saturday, flying out next week to Cyprus, struggled a bit to get what we wanted and ended up costing a bit more, not sure there are bargains to be had anymore
