Where to go for my 50th

So I am 50 at the end of next year and want to go on holiday for 2 weeks to somewhere amazing that I’ve never been before!
The only trouble is I will have 2 x 11 year old DD’s and DH plus I used to fly for Etihad Airlines. So I have lived in the Middle East and have flown to some fantastic locations. I’ve travelled around Australia, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, a few African countries and most of The US, Mexico and Europe.
Sorry I know I sound like a massive AH but help! Where can I go for 2 week that will wow me?
We all love the beach but also history and sightseeing. We can do either all inclusive or backpacking I’m up for anything! Budget around £6000.

Another vote for Argentina! Buenos Aires is fab and wine tasting in Mendoza could be the perfect birthday treat

Newjobformoremoney · 23/06/2023 19:00

What about doing drakes passage and Antarctica?

SybilWrites · 23/06/2023 19:04

I went to Iceland in November (without kids) but definitely would take mine there - they'd love it. So much to do. Although possibly better in the summer with children. But it's on my list to take my kids there.

(btw I've backpacked with my children throughout their lives - my youngest is 11 now and we're backpacking this summer - she'll be carrying her own bag).

What about Italy? I love Italy - would be lovely for a landmark birthday I think. Or interrailing?

cherryassam · 23/06/2023 19:05

If you’re going December/Jan, it’s a great time to see the Northern Lights!

I recommend the Tröllaskagi Peninsula, although have not been there in winter. Gorgeous, not too busy. One of the best drives we did! Stop at the Hofsós swimming pool - just gorgeous views.

@TurnipsMyArse I have thought of Cuba. It would be amazing to see but I think outside the resorts there is abject poverty. I don't know if that would be much fun.

My sister went to Cuba and loved it.

Persiana · 23/06/2023 19:08

Morocco? Experience Marrakesh then go into the mountains and then essouria. I think you'd get to a lot with that budget.

mauveiscurious · 23/06/2023 19:10

Italy

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/06/2023 19:10

We went to Cuba for my 50th and it was amazing. We didn't take the dc though as they were 19 and 21.

Best holiday ever.

People are right in thinking 6k for 4 people won't get you long haul. Someone suggested Slovenia. It is staggeringly beautiful. Turquoise lakes and moss green mountains, churches on islands, hilltop castles, beautiful food and the local wine is outstanding. Lovely hikes - gentle and strenuous, very friendly people and relaxed vibe. Fascinating history (you can have tea in Tito's summer palace or cocktails in his old palace bar - like something out of a 1970s James Bond movie.) Fabulous flea market in Ljubliana as well as a pretty food market with pretty archway cafes and bars.

NeverendingCircus · 23/06/2023 19:13

Loads of fun sporty stuff in Slovenia too - paddle boarding, wild swimming, kayaking, paragliding over lake Bled (looked amazing) as well as mountain climbing in the gorgeous Slovenian alps. And the entire country - even the centre of the city, smells like sweet mountain air. It is SO clean there.

FatArse123 · 23/06/2023 19:15

With your budget, Tromso and the neighbouring area springs to mind. It's absolutely amazing, not for the Northern Lights (which I saw there) so much, but the scenery is amazing, and the people really friendly. Maybe Iceland too? Its a very singular destination. Both counties need to be self catered to be at all decent value, but accommodation and transport isn't that pricey (booze is though)

Lordofmyflies · 23/06/2023 19:15

I'm not sure you would get long haul for 4 for £6k for 2 weeks. I think that will tie you to Europe. What about Barcelona and then travelling down the coast for the beaches? Or perhaps train from Rome, up to Florence followed by a beach near Pisa? Travel has become very expensive - we did 2 weeks in Cuba last summer for 4 and it was about £9,000. The food wasn't great but lovely place.

midsomermurderess · 23/06/2023 19:23

Scandinavia. Start in Norway, work round to Gothenburg, Stockholm, ferry up through the Aland Islands, Turku and across to Helsinki. So beautiful, clean calm. Gorgeous. And quite pricey.

cherryassam · 23/06/2023 19:26

Similar vibes to Iceland/other ‘wintery’ options:

Faroe Islands
Greenland
Lofoten Islands
Lapland

MiniCooperLover · 23/06/2023 19:27

We did the Maldives for my 50th at Easter. Siyam World, big island. Lots for kids, outstanding food and a slide off your accommodation into the sea

eurochick · 23/06/2023 19:27

Belize? Beach, temples, jungle.

It's quite undeveloped as a tourist destination. I had a great holiday there. Apart from the spiders.

FatArse123 · 23/06/2023 19:44

Ooh yes, another vote for the Aland Islands. Taking the ferry to and from Stockholm is wonderful as it squeezes past hundreds of little islands. The ferry itself can be quite cheap if you are lucky. I got a ticket from Stockholm to Turku about 5 years ago, cabin for two for £70 in July. The Turku archipelago is amazing too. The whole area is really lovely. It seems low key as it doesn't have huge mountains or spectacular cities, but it has a unique beauty that is hard to describe. I would say the same for Latvia and Estonia.

worktired · 23/06/2023 20:18

Antarctica

jellyminelli · 23/06/2023 20:21

"Antarctica"

On 6k for 2 weeks with 4 people? 🤣

TTCxox · 23/06/2023 20:23

Went Japan for our honey moon. Research the island Okinawa (my mum is from there)

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/06/2023 20:40

You're going to have to get creative if you want 2 weeks long haul for 4 people for 6k. We're spending that on a week's all inclusive in Tenerife this summer. Prices are SHOCKING this year. You'll have to book flights as soon as they come out to get the best deals I think.

rogueone · 23/06/2023 20:51

Corsica was amazing and there is lots to do including island hopping

stormsurfer · 23/06/2023 20:55

Jordan

MinnieMountain · 24/06/2023 06:06

Turkey, since you mentioned beaches and history.
I’m going for the first time this year but everyone I’ve mentioned it to has loved Turkey.

MantaKay · 24/06/2023 06:26

6000 for 4 including flights and two weeks worth of accommodation? Do you still have adjusted prices with Etihad, because that is not a lot, depending on which country you are planning to go.
I would suggest to look at Belize.
We did an amazing diving trip in Belize and we swam with so many species, including the magnificent Manta Ray.

Caracol is a Maya site few people know about so Belize could tick all your boxes, beach, sightseeing , history and not too expensive.
