Valencia in the summer holidays?

Thinking of booking Valenci for 4 people including ds10 and dd7. Would people recommend it for kids. I'm not into lazing by pools so was thinking there would be lots to do. Flies from Bristol. Any recommendations for things to do, accommodation and which area to stay in? How about the heat?

We had a stop in Valencia late May. It was getting pretty hot then, 29ish. I can imagine it would get very hot in the height of summer. Not sure how open things are in August, or if it’s similar to other Spanish cities in things closing down a bit.

Can highly recommend the aquarium -Oceanografic. It’s more like a zoo in that there’s lots of outside exhibits. It is fairly expensive though and somewhat theme park prices inside for food/drink/extras.

also recommend Museu de les Ciences which is close by and there’s a big IMAX cinema in the same complex although we didn’t go to it. That whole area is very interesting, great architecture and lovely atmosphere.

I think the temperature will be very high in August. I don’t think it would be suitable for a family holiday.

Agree it will be very hot in August, and some shops close for Aug. There aren't likely to be any events on either, for that reason. However, it's a lovely city, it's by the beach and it has a great municipal pool. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g187529-d6402762-Reviews-Piscina_Parque_Benicalap-Valencia_Province_of_Valencia_Valencian_Community.html

I realise you said you weren't into lazing by the pool, but you might want to visit one!

Hoppinggreen · 22/06/2023 16:45

I wouldn’t
Far too hot

Last time I went to Valencia in the summer it was around 35-40°c most of the day. There's a lot of shade around though and it is a beautiful place if you can deal with the heat. A great pool visit will be a must 😁

I went to Valencia last year, end of July and beginning of August, it was hot but it's a fabulous city, lovely sandy beach within city, great museum area, which is air conditioned, aquarium is great. I've heard the zoo is great as well but we didn't get there.

There's a lot of trees and a big park that is in the old riverbed, goes right through the centre of the city, and there's a great gulliver inspired playground in it, basically a massive man lying down that kids can climb on and slide down.

There's also the battle of the flowers festival last Sunday in July, which is great fun, at the end everyone is throwing flowers at each other.

I went with my 8 yr old son, and we loved it, very friendly city.

I think as long as your accommodation has air conditioning and you're happy to change timings of things, so don't try to do too much in the middle of the day, you'll have a great time.

If valencia is too hot, what other cities might be better?

It's a lovely city but surely it would be better for your fellow travellers if you booked a place by the coast and visited Valencia a few times?

I would stay out of Southern Spanish cities in August.
We own a property around an hour from Seville on the coast and in August the area is full of Spanish people escaping the cities

tothesea · 22/06/2023 17:36

We are going to Copenhagen early August which I chose mainly because it won’t be super hot. Loads to do for kids.

cherryassam · 22/06/2023 17:46

If you’re wanting to go from Bristol, I’d be looking at:

Marseille
Toulouse
Nice
Bergerac (Dordogne)
Bordeaux
Bilbao
Porto

Hoppinggreen · 22/06/2023 18:00

We love Munich in Summer, if you stay just outside you should find a lake or 2 to swim in

Decorhate · 22/06/2023 18:11

My son uses Bristol airport a lot for his holidays. He flew into Venice recently, had a quick look around there & then got a train to Lake Garda. Would that appeal?

Daftasabroom · 22/06/2023 18:25

Valencia can be ferocious at that time of year.

NW Spain and Portugal will be mid twenties to thirties, spectacular scenery, fabulous beaches, awesome food, lots of day trips. Mountains, National Parks. Find a campsite with lodges or cabins and a pool or close to o the beach

Brittany coast from Nantes is also beautiful.

Yoyoyo1 · 22/06/2023 21:46

What about Barcalona?

Barcelona isn't quite as far south as Valencia but will pretty much have the same weather

cherryassam · 23/06/2023 10:05

As PP says, Barcelona will probably have slightly cooler weather as it is a bit further north.

I haven’t been in August so don’t know how much it empties due to the Spanish holidays. I’m guessing it probably stays pretty busy with tourists.

Barcelona certainly has plenty to do, there are lots of parks, the beaches are so close, there is a decent aquarium etc.

I guess some of it comes down to how good you all are in hot / very hot weather?

Someone up thread mentioned how siestas etc. can help make things workable. Would this sort of pattern be good for your family on holiday?

Yoyoyo1 · 23/06/2023 13:06

Thinking we might need to go somewhere cooler! My 7dd was hot at 22 degrees!
