Is £400 a night at a hotel too expensive?

DH has had his 'head turned' by nice 4-5* hotel. It's an expensive island generally so £400 a night is mid range. We aren't rich. We could definitely 'afford' it for a few nights of the holiday.

Too expensive for what?

NuffSaidSam · 16/06/2023 13:30

Surely it depends entirely on your budget and what you like to spend your money on?!

For me, yes it's too expensive.

repubconditioner · 16/06/2023 13:33

We have the money, I just think it would be better to save the money towards another trip.

DH hasn't been on a proper holiday in a year, so I think he really wants to 'splash' some cash. For what it's worth, after food and rent and bills, but before savings, we have a combined income of about £4,000 a month.

I guess I always feel guilty about spending money.

It's all relative to your budget isn't it. If you can afford it go for it. If you're going to sit and worry about it you can't.

FlounderingFruitcake · 16/06/2023 13:34

Sorry but how on earth are we supposed to know if it’s too expensive for you? Looks really nice though and not overly lavish or anything, as you say, mid range but absolutely lovely. Is it DH’s suggestion of Antigua that’s come out of the blue? If not and you were already planning that as a destination you then you can’t be that shocked as it’s not a cheap destination!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 16/06/2023 13:34

Not for me, we rarely go away and most often in the UK but I'd rather pay for a bit of luxury.

Our last break was 2 nights in Alton Towers Hotel at £400 a night
It was worth every penny.

Twiglets1 · 16/06/2023 13:35

I don’t think so but everyone’s different. I have paid over £400 a night for really nice hotels but this is something to discuss with your partner not Mumsnet. Depends on your financial situation and your priorities.

FlounderingFruitcake · 16/06/2023 13:37

Each to their own but if I was going all the way to Antigua then I’d want to make it the best I could! If I wanted to stretch the budget for multiple trips I’d personally stay closer to home.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/06/2023 13:38

Do you mind me asking when you are looking at this because we have stayed there before - and my answer would vary depending 'when'. If it's nov to march - I would say expensive but very nice-- if it's summer (we went in July) it was a massive disappointment as the whole resort was totally deserted and had nil vibe at all -

DiggingDogs · 16/06/2023 13:39

Too expensive? It depends on budget, it would be expensive for some people and cheap for others.

TokyoSushi · 16/06/2023 13:40

I think it's too expensive for that hotel, it looks nice but doesn't have many reviews. In theory though, no, it's not too expensive for something lovely.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/06/2023 13:40

So you would only stay there a couple of nights of your holiday?

ReeseWitherfork · 16/06/2023 13:40

Am I reading that right that you have £4000 a month leftover after bills? So you could stay for ten nights and it would still only be one months wages. Not sure why you’re even debating it if thats the case tbh.

FKATondelayo · 16/06/2023 13:43

£4000 disposable income a month but not rich. OK.

FKATondelayo · 16/06/2023 13:44

I've just booked a youth hostel at £85 per night for four of us. #bitter

Zipps · 16/06/2023 13:46

If I can easily afford something which you can I just do it. Yolo.

DiggingDogs · 16/06/2023 13:51

I guess I always feel guilty about spending money.

You need to get over that. Why do you feel you can’t spend your money on nice things? It’s a miserable way to live.

CockyTeeHunz4Eva · 16/06/2023 13:52

This is such an obvious humblebrag of a post.

Did you mean to put ‘for years’ or is your husband actually feeling hard done by because he’s not been on a ‘proper’ holiday for a year? 🙄

You can afford it easily. Either book it or don’t.

repubconditioner · 16/06/2023 13:59

Not a humblebrag at all.

I guess I feel guilty about spending money because I grew up with not much.

@Crikeyalmighty Thank you that's very helpful!

Ffs, if you can afford it and you want to go, why does it matter if anyone else thinks its too expensive?

Unless you've won the lottery overnight, I'm sure you've had a while to get used to having your level of disposable income so not sure why you're all of a sudden overcome with guilt. It's your money, your earned it, you can spend it in whatever you want...without pretending to not feel worthy whilst stealth boasting on MN

This.

It's a drop in the ocean to you.

kitsuneghost · 16/06/2023 14:27

Depends what you are going for
If you are going to spend a lot of time relaxing in the hotel then no, its a nice bit of luxury.
If you are going excursions all day then out at restuarants and bars until late then yes because you wouldnt get the full benefit. Why pay all that to just be asleep the whole time you there.

Yes this

Just bear in mind that food and drink in hotels can be expensive to match the room rate. No point doing it if you are going to worry about buying a beer.

Friends stayed on points in a £1000 a night hotel for 'free' - loved it - but were knocked sideways by the price of food and drink. £25 G&Ts.
