Is £400 a night at a hotel too expensive?

DH has had his 'head turned' by nice 4-5* hotel. It's an expensive island generally so £400 a night is mid range. We aren't rich. We could definitely 'afford' it for a few nights of the holiday.

I think it's reasonable for a shorter trip that is special and will be remembered forever. If you think of all the days in the year you spend working and not doing something special, compared to the very few days of holidays, then why not splurge to make it more luxurious?

400 is also comfortable enough so you won't have to deal with the faff of 5-star hotels (1K+ per night) such as tipping, dress codes, etiquette, turn-down service twice a day etc. Probably a first world MN problem, but a problem nonetheless is that if you splurge for ultra-luxury, it can be exhausting just trying to fit in. So instead of feeling relaxed, you're on edge all the time wondering if you tipped enough, if other guests are judging your clothing etc.

Urgh. I'm exhausted becasue it's Friday and now I'm even more exhausted by that an insuferable bell (end) the OP is. Christ give me strength. Also that hotel doesn't look terribly nice for £400 but I have found this to be the case accross the Caribbean. Go and spend the same in South East Asia if you want bang for buck and you will get something spectacular. But for goodness sake, don't come here asking for pemrission first.

We have the money, I just think it would be better to save the money towards another trip.

DH hasn't been on a proper holiday in a year, so I think he really wants to 'splash' some cash. For what it's worth, after food and rent and bills, but before savings, we have a combined income of about £4,000 a month.

I guess I always feel guilty about spending money.

That sounds like a lot of disposable income to me.

tillyandmilly · 16/06/2023 19:34

I think £100 per night is too expensive!

flagpie · 16/06/2023 20:13

@Gwenhwyfar

She didn't say 'disposable' income. I presumed it was total income so 2k a month each on average.

OP said 'after food and rent and bills, but before savings we have...'

That is absolutely disposable income, not total.

Youknowaboutthepaint · 16/06/2023 20:25

If it's "expensive" in your mind you're likely to find it disappointing IME. If you're not really happy with what you've spent you'll find fault easily. I.e. it's not as good as you expected for the money.

If you can afford it without thinking about the cost, enjoy!

Not a humblebrag at all.

I guess I feel guilty about spending money because I grew up with not much.

@Crikeyalmighty Thank you that's very helpful!

If it helps you could gift me a stay there instead Grin

countdowntonap · 16/06/2023 20:30

Stayed in a €600 night hotel for a week in Menorca last year and it was worthy every penny. Not our usual spend per night but we could afford it and it was fantastic. Just check the reviews show it is value for money.

LaDamaDeElche · 16/06/2023 20:43

How much time are you planning to spend there? If it's just a place to lay your head while you go out and about, then yes, that's too expensive.

gogohmm · 16/06/2023 20:49

Yes expensive for b&b. But depends if you can comfortably afford it or it's a stretch

DPotter · 16/06/2023 21:14

We spent about $400 per night on a hotel on a vine yard in California last year.

Was so disappointed - check the reviews really carefully for the hotels you're interested in

Vanillalime · 17/06/2023 09:42

I clicked your link OP and scrolled down a little and notice Admirals Inn & Gunpowder Suites is showing at almost half the price as Gunpowder House & Suites.

So could that be an option? You would still be at the same exact location and presumably have the same access to the facilities?

FWIW, no I don’t think I would spend £400 p/n at any hotel. I’d much rather stay somewhere less expensive & have more holidays than splurge on expensive hotel rooms.

Sorry, I missed that.
In that case OP could go to indulge her DH even if she herself doesn't find it necessary.

Hi OP, I stayed at this hotel in February!

It was wonderful. Not too bougie/luxury, no annoying guests (they tend to be on the other side of the island), hardly any kids (could have been time of year though).

The best bit is Boom restaurant by the pool, which does amazing food and great cocktails that they will bring to you by the pool. There’s a water taxi which will take you to Galleon beach and between the two hotel sites. You can also rent kayaks for free to do these journeys yourself.

English Harbour Town is generally fantastic and my favourite part of Antigua. It attracts a much more genteel breed of traveller.

If you need restaurant recommendations let me know! 😊

Jauki, thanks for that interesting perspective.

I would not pay 100 per night more for a premium service as I don't put much value on being fawned over. I also could not think of anything worse than rubbing shoulders with people who would like to be fawned over so I guess it works both ways.

The 100 premium weeds out riff raff like me who are perfectly happy to enjoy the location and facilities for 200-300 a night and share the space with less exalted company but liking the diversity and variety of guests for people watching fun.

Having stayed at this hotel recently, I can confirm they do not “fawn over” guests. It was friendly, polite service which was in no way over the top and should just be the normal level of service everywhere frankly.

midsomermurderess · 18/06/2023 17:21

‘Just bear in mind that food and drink in hotels can be expensive to match the room rate’: who’d’ve tought.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/06/2023 18:12

Is anyone going to go without food or clothes if you go?

If not it's fine. If yes, it's too expensive.

tt9 · 21/06/2023 23:51

tbh that looks like a fairly mediocre hotel. I personally wouldn't pay that much for it or choose it at all tbh. the carribbean generally tends to be stupidly over priced due to its popularity with American tourists. you can get the same sort island experience in South East Asia- Thailand/indonesia/Malaysia for much lower prices. the hotels are in much better condition as well. if 400pn is the upper end of your budget, you can get a high end 5 star hotel in those locations easily for that price.

Greenfree · 22/06/2023 00:06

It's looks quaint but I don't think I'd spend £400 a night on it

Soapyspuds · 22/06/2023 00:21

£4k a month is not a huge combined income.

I personally would not spend that much on a hotel for the night. I appreciate it might be an expensive island so how about finding a slightly cheaper destination?

cassiatwenty · 22/06/2023 00:29

theDudesmummy · 16/06/2023 15:00

I'm a high earner and there is no way on earth I'd pay £400 a night for a hotel. No hotel is worth that.

👍

cassiatwenty · 22/06/2023 00:35

OP, you're not ever so subtly promoting this place, are you? 🤣 Have you never seen a pool in your life? Lounge + bed in the same room? What kind of things can one experience on a small island?

toomuchlaundry · 22/06/2023 00:36

Why are you renting with so much disposable income?

CallieQ · 22/06/2023 00:43

Stealth boast

cassiatwenty · 22/06/2023 00:47

I'd rather chill with @FKATondelayo

Wot even is this room? 🤣 Your hubby can sleep and you can watch Strictly Come Dancing whilst in the same room. Let's hope there's no snoring.

Luxury 🌟🌟🤣 Proper luxury, only 6 ppl stayed there. This isn't an advertisement surely.
