Is £400 a night at a hotel too expensive?

DH has had his 'head turned' by nice 4-5* hotel. It's an expensive island generally so £400 a night is mid range. We aren't rich. We could definitely 'afford' it for a few nights of the holiday.

@repubconditioner no problems at all- think it's best to be honest. Half the places were shut, but my H wanted to go back as he lived there for 2 years when he was a tween. Only time we could afford it!! It's very much a late autumn through to late winter resort for those with cash!! It was also very very humid in July - I got bit to buggery

TheMurderousGoose · 16/06/2023 14:44

Only £4000 leftover each month after paying the bills?

magicstar1 · 16/06/2023 14:53

It's all relative and completely up to how you feel.
We don't have disposable income near yours, but we've had sun holidays ranging from €120 per night to €1,800 per night.
Nobody else can tell you if it's too expensive for you.

We probably have more than that, but our bills are very very low and our gross income isn't particularly high by MN standard (we're both basic rate tax payers).

I wouldn't spend that much on a holiday. But OP, it's entirely up to you whether it's worth it. Is the hotel particularly special compared with others in the area and is it in a nice place? Will the weather be good when you're looking at going, not hurricane season etc.

Lesserspottedrobin · 16/06/2023 14:59

If the rooms have soundproofing then go for it.

If not then you'll hear every grunt and snort from next door. Nothing worse than paying so much and listening to all sorts of human bedtime noises.

Do you mind me asking when you are looking at this because we have stayed there before - and my answer would vary depending 'when'. If it's nov to march - I would say expensive but very nice-- if it's summer (we went in July) it was a massive disappointment as the whole resort was totally deserted and had nil vibe at all -

Exactly what I was going to say!

We went to Antigua end of August and visited English Harbour etc. and everywhere was deserted. Wrong time of year! (Weather was awful too unfortunately.)

I'm a high earner and there is no way on earth I'd pay £400 a night for a hotel. No hotel is worth that.

I'm not in awe of the OP's financial system just baffled as to why when she knows that they have X in savings and Y costs £400, why she needs to ask MN if it's too expensive.

What even is a high earner? Who sets the arbitrary amount? 😂 I'm intrigued!

PinkPondQueen · 16/06/2023 15:02

That hotel though looks very meh to me, much nicer hotels in Antigua for similar cost.

This is such an obvious humblebrag of a post.

yup

Christ almighty. £400 a night!

We just had a lovely holiday for 3 of us for 3 nights. Flights, car hire and accommodation weren't much more than that. We did not rough it!

Sorry but if you are worried that you can't afford it, or it's too much you know that you can't afford it and it's too much.

I very much doubt it's 'mid range'...

theDudesmummy · 16/06/2023 15:08

@Lesserspottedrobin there are different definitions, top 1%, top 5%, whatever, it doesn't really matter, my point is that I could afford this hotel, but no way would I ever do so. I'd consider it a huge rip off and would not enjoy a minute of the holiday. Of all the things to spend money on I would consider overpriced hotels to be one of the greatest wastes of money.

for £400 a night id want 5 star all inclusive on a private beach

100%. Would expect something more for £400/night

Stravaig · 16/06/2023 15:30

£4000 a month for discretionary spending, on top of a presumably also large amount on essential expenses? I feel a bit ill. Just to give some support to the part of you that struggles with it.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 16/06/2023 15:38

£4K per month is not a lot of money for two people working full time.

It means both of them are earning about £2K net each. Which means they both earn around the median salary of around £30K.

I assume by disposal income she means net income and not the amount left after paying the mortgage, bills and all their outgoings.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 16/06/2023 15:40

Oh it's after food and rent.

Well, OP it depends on how much rent you pay and if you are saving for a house, surely?

If you rent is perhaps £500 a month then you are not 'rich' just reasonably comfortable. If your rent is £3K a month that's different.

Hbh17 · 16/06/2023 15:42

The cost is pretty standard for a half-decent hotel. If you have the money, then it doesn't matter how much it costs. If you want a lovely holiday, then do it. These things are what we'll remember on our death beds, not the boring stuff that we also had to spend money on (like mortgage, house repairs etc). Just enjoy it, OP - you don't need to be a martyr.

OpalescentFly · 16/06/2023 15:45

I wouldn't pay 400 a night unless for something super special (and I'm struggling to think of what would be special enough to pay that).

I could afford it, it's less than a days wages for me but I can't ever think it would be worth it.

OpalescentFly · 16/06/2023 15:47

I guess I feel guilty about spending money because I grew up with not much.

I think if this is your mindset you might also struggle to enjoy it knowing the cost.

blueshoes · 16/06/2023 15:50

BridportSpectacular · 16/06/2023 14:38

Just bear in mind that food and drink in hotels can be expensive to match the room rate. No point doing it if you are going to worry about buying a beer.

Friends stayed on points in a £1000 a night hotel for 'free' - loved it - but were knocked sideways by the price of food and drink. £25 G&Ts.

Good point. One of the reviews said the food was expensive.

Since it is not all inclusive, I don't think it is worth the price and hassle to get to. I think the resort is nice with a nice view but a bit far to fly for that, with not much buzz or life around the resort and the resort itself is not all inclusive, so not the sort of holiday where you can just lounge around at the resort, drink yourself silly and not make any decisions.

Yes, it looks like a honeymoon resort

rookiemere · 16/06/2023 15:51

My personal view is that £400 is a lot of money to spend per night on just a hotel. Your expectations if you spend that much will naturally be very high , plus an issue I've found with expensive hotels is that all the extras E.g. a drink from the bar or dinner will also be super pricey.

But then we like to travel a lot so I'd rather spend a bit less on the hotel and have more holidays. We tend to go 4 star as that's the sweet spot for us - in the right hotel of course- between cost and quality.

Trixiefirecracker · 16/06/2023 16:07

I think this is just an excuse for a stealth brag.
