Must do list Sardinia

We’re going to Sardinia in July after some amazing holidays in Croatia. We love swimming, snorkelling and amazing food but don’t have a huge budget.
We’re staying on the SE coast and would love to get your best quiet beaches (happy to walk, have a car hire), food markets and reasonably priced restaurants. Bonus points for rocky/pebbly beaches. Thank you!

Can you be more precise on the area? I know the East coast of Sardinia quite well, but not as far down as Costa Rei for example. Anyway a must to eat wherever you are: Culurgiones, Coccoi, Fregola, Malloreddus, Bottarga, Seadas, Porceddu. DRink some Mirto too. The list of food is endless but it's regional and name and specialistes will change depending where you stay. It is spectacular though and the people are very nice!

We’re staying around the pink splodge!

It looks like you're in Tertenia, which I know really well! Tertenia beaches (also known as Marina Di Tertenia) are great, shallow for miles so good for kids, but not busy. I've been there many, many times. There's a fabulous restaurant up in the town of Tertenia it's called Sa Omu, and not expensive. I eat there every time I go. Also on the two beaches in Tertenia there are great places to eat, such as a simple sandwich or a fish dish at the beach bar La Duna for lunch, which is on the main big beach called Spiaggia Foxi Manna' (pronounced 'Fogi' to rhyme with splodgy!) Then on the smaller beach Foxi Murdegu ( also known as Melisenda) there's Nastasj a Mari - a bit pricey though. For cheap abundant eats try Sa Mola, bit disorganized but good food, family run, not expensive and huge portions! Hotel Janas is lovely for a romantic evening meal to watch the sun go down!

You can drive up to Arbatax for a nice evening meal in Da Lenin, booking is necessary though. You could rent a small boat from Tancau near Santa Maria Navarrese ( also nice for a place to walk around in the evening) and go to the amazing beaches of Cala Goloritzé or Cala Mariolou. We also visit Bari Sardo (pebbly & deep water) and Torre di Bari beaches, but we are a couple who stay all day on the beach! If you're self catering in Tertenia and fancy a break from cooking or restaurants, there's a butchers shop run by three sisters in Marina Di Tertenia, they do food to go such as Lasagna, Roast chickens, Sardinian pasta dishes. You can find them in a new housing area on the way to the Foxi Murdegu beach. The butcher's is called Macelleria Rosticceria Sorelle Marongiu.

A drive up to Cala di Pedra Longa in Baunei first thing in the morning gives you access to some amazing sea, climb over some rocks and then snorkeling in deep turquoise water! There's a restaurant up there to eat lunch afterwards. The sun's moved by the afternoon so has to be a morning trip to get the best of the water.

For a non beach day the Grotta su Marmuri is good.
Keep an eye out for a local 'Sagra' they are festivals usually to celebrate food-
A day trip to Orgosolo is good, bit of a trek but the murals are great. There's some great woodland walks around there too if you fancy escaping the heat such as Bosco di Santa Barbara. There's tons more I'm sure, these are the things we usually do when we go there. Have a great time!

Never been, but this cheese always springs to mind when I hear of Sardinia. Depends how adventurous you are in trying it I guess! 😬

I've tried that cheese, it was actually really nice!

wowsaidtheowl · 21/06/2023 06:57

@twilighteaser Oh my goodness you’re a star! That’s all brilliant information and I’m now feeling super excited! We’re actually staying within view of Foxi Manna so all your tips sound close by. Thank you - I might be back with more questions!

@wowsaidtheowl you're welcome, but don't tell everyone, we want to keep it a hidden destination 😉
Here's a pic I took last year from near Pedra Longa (we rented a little boat) Look at that sea! Oh btw if you have young children Cea beach is great too. Very near to Foxi Manna beach there are two supermarkets and a small street market every Saturday. Supermarkets usually close around 12:30-5 for lunch up Tertenia town there's another that's usually open, plus a chemist, bank etc.

where do you fly to?

twilighteaser · 21/06/2023 19:54

The closest airport is Cagliari. Car rental is a must however to get around there.

wowsaidtheowl · 21/06/2023 20:06

@twilighteaser do you rent your own boat or book a spot on a group trip?

Sorry to jump in here - but @twilighteaser are you familiar with the NE near to Olbia? Any recommendations for around there?

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with that far up the coast.

Yes here now!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/06/2023 00:06

Ooh any recommendations of places to visit/restaurants @stevalnamechanger ?
We will be staying just slightly inland of Olbia / Porto Rotondo in September.

TheLurkingOne · 22/06/2023 21:49

Following! We are going to tertenia in July too! Never taken the kids abroad in 13 years!

wowsaidtheowl · 22/06/2023 22:01

@twilighteaser That water looks amazing but I’m a bit nervous about hiring our own boat - is the water flat and easy?! Are there lots of boats out there?

OP posts:
wowsaidtheowl · 23/06/2023 17:47

Goodness, that’s so beautiful- just what we love! Does it get busy?

OP posts:
twilighteaser · 23/06/2023 21:43

Haven't been in July, but I've been in August several times, which is when Sardinia is at its most busy and it's never overly busy.

TheLurkingOne · 24/06/2023 08:57

@ttwilighteaser I'm currently trying to book a hire car at cagliari airport; seems pricey. Is that just how it is? Any bargains to be had?

twilighteaser · 24/06/2023 09:21

@TheLurkingOne yes I believe it is. :-( Italy has already been very expensive for car hire. I haven't ever rented a car there as I'm already in Europe so I take the ferry but that is also very expensive!

TheLurkingOne · 24/06/2023 11:27

Ah ok @ttwilighteaser I guess I'll just have to suck it up. We need a car.
