How long before a holiday do you start packing?

So, we are a family of 4 and we fly out to Turkey a week today. How long before flying do you pack? Are you an organised weeks in advance person, or a last minute throw it all in the case kind of traveller?

A friend of mine is going on holiday a week after us and she text me last weekend to say she had already packed?

I am tempted to do it tomorrow, as I’m in work all next week, but won’t it crease? Or is it going to crease anyway so might as well be organised 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have packing cubes and I usually roll instead of folding. Feeling a bit out of practice due to Covid and not having travelled as often recently. I’m sure I’m just massively overthinking this 🤔

The day before. Any longer things get creased
Male a list before then though in case you forget something

CharlottenBurger · 20/05/2023 15:19

Three days. I pack and it's done in about half an hour. DP packs and changes his mind about things about 3 times in that time.

Stoodley · 20/05/2023 15:22

If I’m packing for me and the kids I’ll probably get the cases out about 10 days before we go and start chucking clothes into them as they come out of the wash. Then a couple of days before I’ll go through everything and make sure there’s enough/not too many clothes - fine tune it.

If it’s just me, probably two days before. Then if I find something needs washing or picking up from the shops, I’ve got time to do it.

However my mum will start packing weeks in advance. And there’s only her and my dad to pack for!

mynameiscalypso · 20/05/2023 15:26

We're going tomorrow morning. Haven't started yet. Will probably do it tonight once DS is in bed but I don't tend to spend more than half an hour packing.

Chocolateisnice · 20/05/2023 15:27

The day before... although I do write a list about a week ahead.

WomensLandArmy · 20/05/2023 15:29

If you are my mother, about four weeks with plenty of drama about how arduous the task is ( for one person) and how vital and essential items have still not been sought and where she has tried to get them. If you are me and part of a family of five, lists start bout four days before and packing over the two days before the holiday. For a weekend away, a couple of hours before departure.

VariationsonaTheme · 20/05/2023 15:29

A couple of hours before or the evening before if it’s an early start. My mum does it weeks ahead though, I obviously didn’t inherit her planning skills.

AliceMcK · 20/05/2023 15:34

Fully depends on the holiday and what I’m taking. We are going on holiday in 30 days, I’m mentally preparing my check list already. We have a crazy month of events coming up so I will probably start the kids packing in the next week but won’t do mine until a few days before as I will probably be wearing the clothes I will take in the run up to the holiday.

I usually get cases out early and add things as I go along. I will put all the beach towels and swimming stuff in first and anything else that won’t be used before we go. I have a dedicated travel toiletries bag so that will get checked and go in.

DHs stuff will be done an hour before we leave, he will just chuck enough underwear for each day and a couple of shirts and T-shirts in.

I generally avoid clothes that crease but in case I do have some I just usually hang near the shower and hope the steam works at taking some out.

I'm off to Turkey next Sat and will get my things together Thursday and chuck in case. Toiletries and hand luggage the day after. I'm out Friday night and in work all week so want it done for then. I'm only going for four days so just carryon. If it's a family trip usually two days before

uggmum · 20/05/2023 15:38

To be honest I am always packed.

I have a lovely full wardrobe of clothes that I only wear on holiday.
So I return from holiday.
I wash it all and then re-pack it in packing cubes. Which I then put on my suitcase.
So dresses, beachwear, swimwear etc
I just need to pop in underwear, toiletries and shoes and I'm ready to go!

frazzledasarock · 20/05/2023 15:40

Night before.

troppibambini6 · 20/05/2023 15:42

There are usually six of us that go so I have to pack for four kids I start "the piles" about 10 days before which helps me see what everyone needs.... I put it in the actual cases the day before.

thistimelastweek · 20/05/2023 15:44

Depends.
The night before if flying is involved.
The morning of the holiday if we're travelling by car.

Livinginanotherworld · 20/05/2023 15:47

Day before usually, but I do leave things that might crease to the last minute before I go. I keep a duplicate toiletries bag ready anyway, so that just gets thrown in beforehand. I always use packing cubes too.

PucketyPuckPuck · 20/05/2023 15:53

I have a list made ready about 2 weeks before - a really detailed list with everything under the sun on there, separated by person and categorised.

Actual packing, the night before.

The dc are robustly threatened that they wear nothing but rags for three days before we leave to make sure there are no last minute laundry panics.

SiobahnRoy · 20/05/2023 15:53

Day before, but I start preparing to pack at least a week before.

Ohdofuckofdear · 20/05/2023 15:56

I write a list 1 week before if I don't need to buy anything to take with us and then I normally pack about 2 days before we leave.

lightbulbmomentsintown · 20/05/2023 15:57

I've been known to have clothes still in the dryer an hour before we're due to leave. Grin

egowise · 20/05/2023 15:57

I'm going to Turkey next Friday and I am going through clothing on Tues, so will wash and pack from there. Will likely finish Thurs evening.

Dressshelp · 20/05/2023 15:58

I do it about an hour before we leave and, as karma would have it, I’m married to a man who does it about a week before…… we drive each other bananas 😁

yoshiblue · 20/05/2023 16:01

Two days before, have time to do a last min wash/dry too.

Spriggedcotton88 · 20/05/2023 16:02

Make sure laundry is up to date the weekend before.

And then, for each person, each week night leading up to holiday, lay everything out on spare bed and then halve it.

hettiethehare · 20/05/2023 16:16

The day before - I will make a list a couple of weeks before then to make sure there isn't anything I need to get though.

We've never owned enough clothes/ had enough space to pack weeks in advance.

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 20/05/2023 16:18

I write a list of what I'm taking, what I need to get. I buy the things I don't have. Then night before pack everything. If The List is correct, you need nothing else.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 20/05/2023 16:21

Dh - 3 days; a week for a big holiday. Me - an hour; the day before for a big holiday.
