How long before a holiday do you start packing?

So, we are a family of 4 and we fly out to Turkey a week today. How long before flying do you pack? Are you an organised weeks in advance person, or a last minute throw it all in the case kind of traveller?

A friend of mine is going on holiday a week after us and she text me last weekend to say she had already packed?

I am tempted to do it tomorrow, as I’m in work all next week, but won’t it crease? Or is it going to crease anyway so might as well be organised 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have packing cubes and I usually roll instead of folding. Feeling a bit out of practice due to Covid and not having travelled as often recently. I’m sure I’m just massively overthinking this 🤔

Went to America with my toddler and baby about a month ago and I started packing 3 weeks beforehand.

Start with lists on my phone about a month before, little bit every day. Them one week before start to wash and pack with my lists. Husband does it say before with no list.

We have a crate in the living room for things like charger, games, books, medication etc. We all add to it, starting around 1 week before we leave.

I stop washing around 4 days before so there is enough time to dry and iron.

Packing happens the day before.

@nutmegnook Just spent a happy half hour on that App. I do love a list!

I have a list made ready about 2 weeks before - a really detailed list with everything under the sun on there, separated by person and categorised.

Actual packing, the night before.

The dc are robustly threatened that they wear nothing but rags for three days before we leave to make sure there are no last minute laundry panics.

We call the week before a holiday "raggy knicker week" 😄

I go in 6 weeks.....I wrote my list yesterday Grin. Luckily we fly on a Monday so I will have the weekend before to pack. I love packing to go but always take way too much. I hate unpacking though

About two days before, both DH and me. We usually have activity holidays, doing a sport we both love, so DH gets all the gear checked and packed a bit earlier.

We rarely have holidays where we need to look smart so no worries about creasing etc. My washbag is always ready to go, I have holiday knickers, sports bras and socks so they get repacked as soon as they are washed.

We have a bag of bits like chargers, torches and first aid stuff which is just for holidays so no extra packing there, it just gets thrown in.

We go next Saturday and I've almost fully packed for me and my daughter, just hair brushes/deo etc to get chucked in before we leave. Husband hasn't started or looking at his packing list

turkeyboots · 21/05/2023 08:35

For a short break, I can pack the night before. Especially if going to relatives and I can wash stuff there.
For a week plus I'll pack weeks in advance as I've learnt that's when I find out ds only has 3 pairs of pants that fit and DD has no socks or t shirts.

saveforthat · 21/05/2023 08:41

Years ago, my best friend used to have a practice pack. Weeks before she would check everything she wanted to take would fit in the suitcase, then unpack it. Weight wasn't such an issue then.

Vitriolinsanity · 21/05/2023 11:17

I have been known to take a suitcase of washing and send the lot to the hotel laundry.

I was a party girl in the 90's and packing would have taken up social time

Depends when the flight is. morning flight, the night before. Afternoon flight, the morning before. Pack any earlier and stuff gets really creased. I did it like this when holidaying with children too.

greyhairnomore · 21/05/2023 13:19

On the day. If you forget anything there are airport shops.

User1529865 · 21/05/2023 13:22

A couple of weeks before I start gathering in case I need to buy anything, the actual packing of clothes is done the day before

hopeishere · 21/05/2023 13:28

The day before. Or the morning depending on flight times. None of us have enough clothes to pack weeks in advance.

Oblomov23 · 21/05/2023 13:49

Packing the day before. But planning, thinking what clothes you want and getting them washed, all in the week before.

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/05/2023 13:54

Actual physical packing, the day before but I make a comprehensive list for each holiday (based on a list from a similar previous holiday) and either start gathering non-creasing stuff a few days before or at least check that I know where everything is so there aren't any nasty surprises.
