We've done this (although not via Boston) but after ten hours - count them, ten - on the train between NYC and Niagara, I was climbing the walls. Sooo slow.

I once took an Amtrak train from Chicago to LA to save money as a student. I'm sure it took 2-3 days. Or at least it felt that way...

I've been thinking of doing Miami and have a couple of days in the Bahamas

Has anyone else done this ?

We did New York onto Cape Cod then finished in Boston. Loved it.

I was going to suggest this too, but if you fancied Niagara Falls / the Lakes / Canada, rather than Montreal or Toronto I would suggest Niagara on the Lake. Here's just a few of the things you can do there https://dreamplanexperience.com/best-things-to-do-in-niagara-on-the-lake/

I am lucky enough to have a friend who lives there, and it is beyond relaxing. You can also take day trips out into some really fascinating places including some of the Amish Mennonite areas if you really want to go slowly - the food purchases and patchworks are highly prized.

Or if looking for a cruise, how about the St Lawreance and 1000 Islands https://visit1000islands.com/

These are all the sorts of things that are a little less common than the normal tourist trail - well travelled yes, but not commonplace.

What about The Outer Banks in South Carolina, or Myrtle Beach. Or would that be too far? Certainly a very different second leg.

Yes to cape cod and on to Boston if time. Easy to pick up a car in NYC and drive

HighlandDays · 25/04/2023 16:19

We did NY , Boston by train, Cape Cod then back to NY and onto Cayman Islands. Cayman Islands are a cheap flight from NY!

NY to Boston train ride is stunning, right through Connecticut fishing areas and you get a stunning view.

I second the suggestion to go to a Miami & the Florida Keys. Although do check the cost of hotels first - the Keys seem to have shot up in price since covid. But they are wonderful. Key West has the most amazing vibe - there’s nowhere like it.

LysHastighed · 25/04/2023 18:38

Once Boston, another time Miami and Key West, another time New Orleans, and another time Iceland

TrishTrix · 27/04/2023 01:53

Nantucket! If I was rich I'd move there.

I'm not so I'll stay in London.

We wanted this last year and couldn’t find anything suitably relaxing for after so came home for a month and then went to Greece for a week!

RP90 · 27/04/2023 15:57

We did Miami, cruise round the Bahamas then NYC. Loved it!

Montreal - yes.

Niagara Falls - no. The Falls themselves are worth a day trip, but the place itself is hellish. We stayed one night (on the Canadian side), and even one night in NF is too long.

Niagara Falls are best seen from the Canadian side. I agree about not staying there, but doing the boat ride under the Falls is fab and one of the best things we did with the kids. My dh did comment we looked like we were wearing giant condoms in the plastic macs they give you to wear 🤣

I liked walking over the US/Canadian border.
