niagra falls? montreal?

Montreal - yes.

Niagara Falls - no. The Falls themselves are worth a day trip, but the place itself is hellish. We stayed one night (on the Canadian side), and even one night in NF is too long.

We did New York on the way to Florida. It was the week before Christmas and our flights were changing there so decided to add a few days in New York at Christmas on the way.

Anjo2011 · 22/04/2023 19:37

We did NYC, Washington and Boston . Was fab. Would choose Boston over Washington at a push.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 22/04/2023 19:38

We did New York and Washington, got the train from one to the other. Was a really good way to do it, only took a few hours and it took you from the middle of one city to the other. Washington would be perfect for a couple of extra days - lots to see in a small area.

I wouldn’t do the Caribbean, it’s the start of the hurricane season. I would also avoid Florida at that time of year.

The NE on the other hand will be wonderful. I’d do a couple of places in New England. I like Newport a lot. Maybe Martha’s Vineyard. I’d eat lobster every day.

I personally wouldn’t do the Hamptons. It’s great as a break from NYC if you live there, but I’m not sure I’d want a whole week there.

fuckitfuckitall · 22/04/2023 20:07

San Francisco was 5 hours from New York. We went there first so did the long flight to get it out of the way. Would 100% do it again

FlySwimmer · 22/04/2023 20:21

Did New York & Antigua. Was about a 4-5 hour flight between them (so it’ll depend on how you define ‘long’). Bliss.

I do NYC and Bermuda pretty often. Works really well, just a short hop to Bermuda from NYC

I agree, Niagra falls, one day only but you can stop and visit it on your way to Montreal!

We did NYC 4 nights and Mexico 7 nights! November time, so it was freezing in NYC and we had snow then jumped off a 4 hour flight into Cancun to 30* heat and RELAXED for a week! Incredible!

twilightcafe · 22/04/2023 22:20

We've done NYC and down to Washington DC by train and then on to Virginia by car.
I'd really recommend taking the train. They are v comfortable and you travel through parts of the US that tourists never normally see.

IbbleDibbleDibble · 22/04/2023 19:26

How was this @Rummikub ? Looked like a very king train journey so we were thinking train from NY to Boston then fly to Toronto?

@IbbleDibbleDibble

it was long. But as pp said I enjoyed watching the scenery change. Get snacks and a book and settle in.
I’ve also done the sleeper train to Chicago and loved that too.
The Amtrak trains had meatloaf with tomato sauce baked in - I must’ve eaten loads of that- yum!

We did a week in Barbados at the Colony Club and then flew to NYC for 3 nights. It was bloody brilliant. The first 10 days of December so amazing temperatures in Barbados and then snow in NYC.

It was a few years ago though pre children and when we both had good London salaries!

MyWayOnly · 23/04/2023 19:11

Bermuda as already mentioned. Not in hurricane corridor (and not in the Caribbean) and only 5 or so hours back to the UK.
Not a cheap island but generally safe, clean and small to get around.

ouse · 23/04/2023 19:14

I have done New York followed by a week-long Caribbean cruise from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

AgathaMystery · 23/04/2023 19:16

Iceland.

you can fly uk - Iceland - NYC & each flight is like 5hrs. We like to do Iceland last because it’s much more relaxing than NYC. we do 3 nights NYC & then 4 nights in Iceland. It’s enough time to do the golden circle and blue lagoon. Totally awesome.

Anyone done New York then a cruise?
where to?

Many times! I love NYC as a two/three day stopover before a cruise. There’s usually a weekly sailing from NYC to Bahamas/Bermuda. In summer there’s usually one of the Princesses and/or a Norwegian based from NYC heading up towards Canada/the cape/ New England.
My favourite way to do an NYC & cruise combo is flying out, 3 nights in a hotel of my own choice - the knickerbocker is my fave - then a Cunard QM2 crossing home. You can take unlimited luggage on the cruise, there are no airport queues, no overnight flights, and by changing the clocks one hour each day, no jet lag either. The ship is like being in a floating resort hotel - plenty to do on board! Shops, bars, pools, cinema, planetarium, theatre shows in the evening etc.
You should find a cruise from around £8-900pp for the summer, and this will include a flight which will be the day before the cruise (they have to allow time for delays etc so fly you the day before). When you book you can ask them to move the flight to three days before and they usually do so free of charge. Then just sort your own hotel for the three nights (the packaged hotel add ons are usually not good value for money).

shakeitoffsis · 23/04/2023 19:40

We did cancun and New York it was fab.

Carrie76 · 23/04/2023 20:01

Also interested in this, we’re going to NYC in July. Will have 3 kids in tow, youngest is 8. Hoping to go to a beach somewhere not too pricey.

afrikat · 23/04/2023 20:05

We did New York then St John, a USVI for our honeymoon. Absolutely awesome

Qilin · 23/04/2023 20:09

We've done New York after Washington DC, then a week in Antigua after that.

We've also been to New York first, then on to Cape Cod before finishing the holiday in Boston,

CharlotteStreetW1 · 23/04/2023 20:09

Rummikub · 22/04/2023 17:47

New York to Toronto on the train. Via Boston and buffalo.

We've done this (although not via Boston) but after ten hours - count them, ten - on the train between NYC and Niagara**, I was climbing the walls. Sooo slow.

Thethingswedoforlove · 23/04/2023 20:13

@KitKatLove we did exactly the same trip. NY, cape cod then Boston. And in cape cod we stayed Here recommended by fellow mumsnetters. Loved it. It Wd cheaper for a week on cape cod than a night in Ny!
