How strict are easy jet with hand luggage?

SillyOldBear3 · 17/04/2023 10:59

Flying to Majorca from Manchester next week and just measured my cabin bag.
The allowed size is 45 x 36 x 20..
My bag is 45 x 36 x 23

Am I likely to get away with this or will they be really strict with the extra 3cm depth? (It's just the plastic wheels which make it 23cm really..)

Any advice appreciated..!

We've just been away with easyJet and they were pretty strict with the bag sizing for wheely bags as the flight was full. If it doesn't fit in the right size gauge (including wheels and handles) then they will put it in the hold and charge you.

annonymousmouseinyourhouse · 17/04/2023 11:03

Very strict.

Husband was charged for being 2cm over and the bag had to go in the hold.

Powerplant · 17/04/2023 11:39

I was charged by EasyJet even though I measured and measured my carryon case. The wheels JUST wouldn’t fit in their cage thingy, however, flying back I popped my coat over the top of the handle and sailed through.

Obsidianrocks · 17/04/2023 14:31

We flew with them 2 weeks ago and no one seemed to be checking. Flew with them again on Saturday and they were pulling over people with small wheeley cases to check if they fitted in the box. Several didn’t and the owners had to pay the baggage charge.

WarningToTheCurious · 17/04/2023 14:35

I’ve often seen the hard shell wheeled cases being checked, it’s often th wheels that make them oversized. Soft bags not so much - if you don’t overstuff them then if they are a couple of cm over the dimensions then they squish down to the right size.

ItsCalledAConversation · 17/04/2023 14:52

Yes if your bag is too big you’ll be charged for putting it into the hold.

GummyBearMummyBear · 17/04/2023 15:05

Just back from EasyJet flight to Paris, they didn't check anyone's bags that I saw. I travelled with infant and had a huge baby change backpack on (forgot to measure it), luckily they didn't check/even notice.

Also flown with them a month or so ago and like you my case wheels were slightly over the limit, they just said it was fine and let me on. Probably depends on how full the flight is/how busy they are. They aren't the most consistent in my experience!

Skybluepinky · 17/04/2023 15:21

My friend had to remove wheels from her normal carryon case, or it would have had to go in the hold.

SillyOldBear3 · 17/04/2023 18:32

Thanks everyone, it does seem like it's a lot to do with luck on the day and how full the flight is! Not sure whether to risk it or take a back pack instead..

One of the teenagers I travelled with recently was charged £40 for his massive bag. I thought that was decent of them (as it was huge!). Perhaps they took pity on him as he was a young adult.
Personally I wouldn’t risk it - it’s just unnecessary stress. If you can use a bag that complies then I’d do that

PricklyFoot · 17/04/2023 18:40

I went to Majorca on an EasyJet flight last year. They were checking bags that looked too big, i think a rigid bag that was too big would probably be picked up, but a slightly overstuffed rucksack was fine.

Mine measured the correct dimensions empty, but once stuffed full was a couple of cm over in every direction. It did fit under the seat comfortably.

ClassicLib · 17/04/2023 18:44

If it’s a very busy holiday flight, EasyJet are very strict. Your bag either fits in the gauge or it doesn’t, and if it doesn’t it will go in the hold and you will be charged. On less busy domestic flights, when many passengers just have laptop bags, they often don’t check.

mudonmyslipers · 17/04/2023 18:49

Last time we flew Easyjet, a charming (not) employee was stalking the line with a contactless machine looking for potential offenders. Saw him ask a couple of people to put their bags in the sizer and he charged at least one of them (think it's £30 or £49 each way). Personally I'd not risk it. Buy a correctly sized bag instead

Oblomov23 · 17/04/2023 18:54

If it's a soft bag, rucksack, it's fine. Hard case, or any wheels, they won't allow it now, they are stricter than they were before.

SomersetBrie · 17/04/2023 19:06

You could check if the flight is full by seeing if you can book in, say, 10 people.
I would be concerned if it was full, as people have said above. I have found them to be the strictest airline about things like this.

xraydelta · 17/04/2023 20:48

I flew easyJet today. My case was slightly over (the wheels!) as I'd flown with a different airline out.

They didn't check.

xraydelta · 17/04/2023 20:48

PS the flight was overbooked.

SillyOldBear3 · 17/04/2023 21:06

I think I'll have to rethink and pack a backpack instead. My case is quite suitcase-like and looks bulky so I bet they would decide to measure it. It's a shame, as I don't think I'll get as much in a backpack..but better safe than sorry.. I'd be kicking myself if I had to pay £60 to put it in the hold.

In home bargains they do little hand luggage wheelies that meet the Ryan air and Easy jet random sizings. They're only a tenner or so

Iguanainanigloo · 17/04/2023 21:11

And they're soft so can be mashed to the correct dimensions if a bit bulky/overpacked on one side 😆

Throwncrumbs · 17/04/2023 21:15

I fly a lot with easyJet, it always seems to be okay on the flight out but really strict on flights back, no idea why. There is a right cow at Ibiza airport who won’t let you fly if you don’t pay for your ‘oversized’ luggage!

WarningToTheCurious · 18/04/2023 12:26

We have some CabinMax bags that are EasyJet and Ryanair hand luggage sizes.

I use one of these 30 litre bags for a 2 week trip - just needed to do a couple of quick laundry runs

Do you mean the sizing for the cabin bag or the sizing for the non-priority (free) bag which is the size of a large shoe box? I have never been in that store but I have seen one nearby so I will take a look.

ifonly4 · 18/04/2023 15:02

DD had to take some stuff out of hers. Pants and socks stuffed in pockets, an extra layer on, carried one layer and stuffed another in with the food she'd bought.

😂What happened to the days of travelling in style with your immaculate hairdo and little handbag.
