How strict are easy jet with hand luggage?

SillyOldBear3 · 17/04/2023 10:59

Flying to Majorca from Manchester next week and just measured my cabin bag.
The allowed size is 45 x 36 x 20..
My bag is 45 x 36 x 23

Am I likely to get away with this or will they be really strict with the extra 3cm depth? (It's just the plastic wheels which make it 23cm really..)

Any advice appreciated..!

Very strict. I ended up buying a new bag to fit the 'large' cabin bag allowance but it was worth it to avoid checking anything in.

If the flight is full and most people have chosen the 10kg carry on option then they'll be strict. Because there's not enough space in the cabin otherwise.

If the flight is not so full they don't check so much.

Dsis is cabin crew and says this trend towards everyone carrying their luggage on is a total nuisance. Some flights it's just not possible to fit all the bags on, or the person in row 2 ends up with their bag in row 26. She's had a fair few angry passengers over the Easter holidays.

It'll be fine as long as you're happy to pay an extra 50 quid per case at the gate which is what we were charged for being about that amount over despite the cases having been fine a few months earlier, in fact we'd bought them for that reason. Have a look on Trustpilot, you'll see it's happened to loads of people.

EasyJet seem stricter flying out of some places than flying in.

To be fair the trend towards people maxing-out their carry on allowance is a product of airlines charging astronomical amounts for hold luggage.

A second for cabinmax. Really great bags.
easyJet is inconsistent. I think they just don't like the overhead lockers to be full. As if everyone has a Wheely bag they will not all fit.
A squashy bag is a better idea.

QueSyrahSyrah · 18/04/2023 18:59

@Trysbutfails easyJet now charge more for a 10kg hand luggage bag than a 15kg checked bag on some flights; trying to reverse the trend I guess. It is much, much quicker to board when only a handful of people have large cabin bags, just a pain to wait to collect your checked bag at the other end.

Itwasnaeme · 19/04/2023 00:11

This photo illustrates the gauge used now by easyJet - I've seen a couple both be charged for having bags that wouldn't fit the small one

And taking too long to unload the hold luggage (with a risk of it going missing). If I am going for a short trip I don't want to waste any time waiting for my hold bags.

The damage to hold luggage and the unloading times are the reason I won't use the allowance even when it is included within the fare.

I guess the ideal from the airline’s perspective if for people not to have luggage at all, in terms of the speed of turnaround (so many of these budget routes rely on the next set of passengers boarding minutes after the previous set disembark), reducing weight on the plane etc.

Would be interesting to know how much difference it makes to them to have a £10kg bag in the hold vs in the cabin. Presumably they’re charged by the airport for baggage handling?

maranella · 19/04/2023 11:37

It sounds like it's a case on wheels, in which case you'll need to pay for cabin luggage. The free allowance is just for a little backpack that fits under the seat in front and the space is quite small. We flew with them on Sunday and no way would a wheeled case have fitted in that spot.

Sudeko · 18/04/2023 13:45

Do you mean the sizing for the cabin bag or the sizing for the non-priority (free) bag which is the size of a large shoe box? I have never been in that store but I have seen one nearby so I will take a look.

It's the cabin bag that you can pay the priority boarding for. Yeah, the free "carry on bag" is literally a handbag if that. My kids school backpacks were too big according to the measurements for that! But the home bargains cases you can put in the overheads if paid for priority boarding, and they're really roomy. The handle disappears into the actual dimensions of the case, and the wheels barely stick out, so no wasted cm's anywhere on the outside 😆 managed to pack for me and two kids into just the one little case (air BnB in Spain for a week with a washing machine, so just packed light, a few outfits each, and washed while we were over there). I hate waiting for luggage out the hold, so I'm always determined to cram everything into cabin cases. Absolutely winged it with the one case last time... Knew if I paid for the kids to take them too, I'd end up lugging three cases around 🥴

Ah, okay. I have four soft shell cabin bags which I have always used without any issue.
I think the new challenge is trying to fit a week's worth of clothing into a tiny (free) bag which also must have wheels. Those are usually sold out and quite expensive for what they can hold. When people start stuffing their coat pockets with knickers then I think I declare defeat and I accept that I will always have to pay the extra charge for a small suitcase onboard. It could end up turning into something similar to Mrs Armitage On Wheels!

Hi, sorry to resurrect this thread but I'm flying with Easyjet soon (first time flying in about 10 years!) and have a couple of questions:

The website says the maximum carry on bag size is 45x36x20cm - is that 45cm tall and 36cm wide, or can the measurements be reversed?

It says that handles can't be included but surely that would exclude basically any handbag - if the handles can fold down, would this be OK?

Thank you!

😂What happened to the days of travelling in style with your immaculate hairdo and little handbag.

I don’t travel with immaculate hair or any kind of style but I do just have a very small bag with me!
I just pay to check luggage in, so few people do it that I’ve never waited longer than 10 minutes for my bag and only once on a flight home had a lost bag which contained all dirty washing but was delivered to my door the next day.
I get that it’s a gamble but it’s one I’m happy to take to not have to play these games of packing for 4 days in a pencil case 😂

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2024 18:10

Sorry, didn’t realise this was initially such an old thread!

Ndd135632 · 18/02/2024 18:12

Just flown back with them and saw somebody having wheely bag checked and wheels meant it didn’t fit the slot. Had to pay to check it in.

"Tall" and "wide" don't really mean anything here (after all, the wheels might be on the long side, or the bag might not have wheels at all). It just means the longest dimension mustn't exceed 45 and the second longest mustn't exceed 36, so for example 37 x 37 would be out because you can't trade in 8cm along one dimension for 1cm on the other.

The issue that the airline are interested in is whether it will fit in the overhead bin of an A320 along with everyone else's similar bag. They don't care if you have to turn it through 90 degrees from your idea of what "tall" and "wide" correspond to for that to work.

VERY strict.
