Had a drink, booked wrong hotel - Cales de Mallorca

dessicatedblackbird · 08/04/2023 00:31

On a high spirited whim I decided to book a holiday, looked at my shortlist and thought fuck it I must have vetted all these if they are on the shortlist (I am crippled by indecision)

But now the details have come through I realise it is completely wrong and not what I want (and i don't think even on my shortlist, it appears to have been a ' you'd like this')

Has anyone been, is there any history/culture/anything worth seeing nearby or have I just booked nowheresville as Spanish prices when I could have done the same in a cheaper country?

I’ve been there - it’s a lovely area, but a lot of bars / hotels etc.
Not sure there’s a whole lot of history / landmarks etc, but I had a lovely relaxing time.

dessicatedblackbird · 08/04/2023 05:48

Thanks, glad it was relaxing but that is probably the opposite of what I want really.

I feel even worse now I've woken up, looks like it is going to be an expensive lesson- I rarely drink I am so cross with myself. I didn't even want to go to Mallorca, but now I've found I'm definitely in the wrong part of the island

Can you pay a small fee for a transfer to a partner hotel?

GoodChat · 08/04/2023 06:13

When's the booking for and who with? They might let you swap your holiday over to somewhere else.

Hollyhead · 08/04/2023 06:15

I would call and see if you can swap, I’d be really honest about how you made the mistake! Go armed with the details of the holiday you want to book instead!

Monkeymonkeymoo · 08/04/2023 06:46

Oh no!
If you’re sure it’s not somewhere you want to go then I’d see if it’s possible for you to cancel or swap to somewhere else.

If you can’t then I’d look at what options there are for excursions/boat trips/car hire etc.
I’ve booked to stay in the wrong place before but it actually worked out fine because I hired a car and got to explore some secluded coves/little towns/wineries etc that I wouldn’t have gone to otherwise.

Dammitthisisshit · 08/04/2023 06:52

you might be able to cancel within 24 hours of booking - you could with internet booking flights (I used to book a lot for work and had to twice when I booked the wrong date - I wasn’t even drinking, just doing too many things at once!)

Dammitthisisshit · 08/04/2023 06:54

This:
Is there a cooling-off period for online holiday bookings?
Here's what you need to know: The 24 hour cooling-off period will begin once a booking request has been accepted by the owner, or a quote paid for. You will receive a confirmation email to let you know. The cooling-off period only applies to a stay that is 60 days or more away.

so call them immediately.

dessicatedblackbird · 08/04/2023 06:56

Thanks all, biggest problem is that it's the wrong island, in fact wrong country really. I know that sounds ridiculous but I thought it was a hotel I had saved so didn't look at the location just the room type.

I've looked at better locations and found a few better options (on the Palma side) but they are all 2k more, and as above Majorca wasn't on my list so can't really justify that.

And I've just read about the tourist tax.

@Monkeymonkeymoo thanks that did cheer me slightly. I have driven abroad but only on small islands, driving in Mallorca seems a bit more daunting but you are right I'd have to do that. (All the trips I want are the other side of the island.)

Side note. I appreciate that this is a first world problem that I am very lucky to have. But like everyone money is hard won and not to be wasted, but have to also bear in mind the sunk cost fallacy.

@Dammitthisisshit sadly this appears to be for flights not package holidays. I can cancelled but lose deposit. Thanks for trying to help.

@Dammitthisisshit who did you book with? I believe TUI has a 24 hour cooling off period.

mummyh2016 · 08/04/2023 07:02

@Dammitthisisshit sorry ignore my tag!

Glad I'm not the only one who's done this exact same thing. So just solidarity here

BungleandGeorge · 08/04/2023 08:29

I think Majorca is lovely and quite a bit of history in palma. You’d probably like the interior too. I think you really need to hire a car, the roads are pretty good

Duhduhdub · 08/04/2023 08:35

Tourist taxes are payable in a lot of places, just to make you aware. France charges tourist taxes as do most Caribbean islands just off the top of my head.

We went to here in 2021. It is the wrong side of Majorca for Palma and getting to Palma was 2 buses, the connection was in Manacor. We missed our connection as it seems that the bus from Palma arrives then all the connecting buses are there waiting and it's like a bun fight. We ended up waiting in Manacor for about 90mins for the next bus.
There's a small complex with a few shops and restaurants in the immediate area.
We stayed in a lovely hotel and it was what we needed during Covid but I wouldn't go back there.
Hopefully your able to change your holiday

Bunce1 · 08/04/2023 09:09

Driving on the island is very very easy and it is small.

Frightenedbunny · 08/04/2023 09:13

Puerto pollenca is in the north and is absolutely beautiful. It’s not as you probably imagine Majorca to be. Could you try to change hotels?

Frightenedbunny · 08/04/2023 09:15

We had a last minute booking to calles de Majorca when the kids were young. There wasn’t much there apart from a few hotels. I wouldn’t really recommend it.

NCTDN · 08/04/2023 09:18

I thought all distance buying had a 24 hour cooling off period?

dessicatedblackbird · 08/04/2023 10:02

@NCTDN it does it appears on everything except package holidays.

@strubidooo yep that about sounds like how I am imaging it.

@Frightenedbunny thanks I'm looking at that area now.

@Bunce1 car hire is much more expensive than Europe mainland/Greek Islands but glad to hear it isn't too bad.

@Duhduhdub true, but DD1 is now 16 so have to pay for her as well, and because the hotel is good it's more than I've ever spent before.

@mnisannoyingAF awful isn't it. What did you do in the end?

ChocChipHandbag · 08/04/2023 10:08

What travel company have you booked with, exactly when did you book and when is the holiday? I can look at their Ts and cs if you like, I work in this area. You might be able to swap to a different location offered by the same holiday company.

Hollyhead · 08/04/2023 11:13

Font just rely on the policy on the website, give them a call, you never know what goodwill they might extend.

mynameiscalypso · 08/04/2023 11:39

FWIW, I went to Mallorca expecting to be hugely underwhelmed and we ended up having a fabulous time. Some amazing scenery, delicious food and enough to do for a week (especially if you have a car). There are some nice villages to potter around.

I had to pay it all and it was mine and my friends room too. I probably didn't learn my lesson, I'm still shit at detail 😂
