Cyprus- too close to Syria?

We're planning a week away and like the look of Cyprus. FIL is quite anxious anyway but is quite upset about the thought of us going to Cyprus because it's geographically close to Syria. We don't have to go but I don't feel it's a risk.

What do you think?

I think your FIL has an overanxiety issue. There really isn’t a risk. Enjoy your trip.

Polis · 08/03/2023 11:02

What exactly does he think is going to happen? There is a lot of water between Cyprus and Syria.

PuttingDownRoots · 08/03/2023 11:03

Cyprus has UN peacekeepers protecting the the border between the "Turkish" zone and the "Cypriot" zone (oversimplification of the political issue). Plus British military ases.

Proximity to Syria is not really an issue. It has other problems, but not really that.

I lived there for two years.

pawz · 08/03/2023 11:04

I'd go!

That's a FIL issue and tbh it's a bit barmy. There's a huge body of water between the countries!

PillBoxes · 08/03/2023 11:04

I don't think much will convince him otherwise, unreasonable as his perception is, so TBH I'd go somewhere he would feel more comfortable. It will help all of you have an enjoyable holiday if he doesn't jump at every noise thinking it is an air raid or something. Not worth it.

Iamclearlyamug · 08/03/2023 11:04

Agree with previous posters - Cyprus is absolutely bloody miles away from Syria

Polis · 08/03/2023 11:06

If I have read it correctly, he isn’t going.

PillBoxes · 08/03/2023 11:07

Oh damn, I didn't read post properly. I thought he was going with you! He's not is he? But will worry all the time you are away anyway.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/03/2023 11:10

Well it’s got a shed load of the MOD over there so I can think of worse places to holiday if something went wrong (Turkey for example).
Plus it has some of the best tourist medical facilities in the whole of the Med.
Just don’t go in August, it’s roasting.
Have a Brandy Sour for me when you’re there.

Polis · 08/03/2023 11:14

We are booked for August!

Squamata · 08/03/2023 11:15

What specifically does he think the risk is? I think chemical weapons were used in Syria, but it's not like they travel that far. I don't think anyone is about to invade Cyprus, or that bombs will accidentally travel that far!

Hiphopopotamus · 08/03/2023 11:45

I would say anyone genuinely worried about a Cyprus holiday for these reasons won’t respond to these rational reasons as to why it will be fine because the fear itself is just totally irrational in the first place. OP just go and enjoy your holiday - if your FIL worries about you, he worries and there’s not a huge amount you can do about it.

gogohmm · 08/03/2023 12:58

There are security concerns about Cyprus but Syria isn't one of them. The Turkish controlled sector has particular concerns as consular services aren't available

whoami24601 · 08/03/2023 13:00

Cyprus is beautiful and so safe. My sister lives over there and we've been to visit 3 times this year. If you're anywhere near Limassol drive out to a bakery called Lydiana's and have some baklava. Thank me later!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/03/2023 13:03

Cyprus is 300 miles from Syria (also Beirut, as I pointed out to a colleague who wanted to holiday there when the war in the Lebanon was raging in the 80s and 90s). Would FIL not go to London because something was happening in Belfast? (similar distance).

Also near Beirut.

Spanielsarepainless · 08/03/2023 13:10

Cyprus is gorgeous. I agree with PPs that risk from Syria is non-existent.

NomadicSpirit · 08/03/2023 13:12

That's no risk. There's several hundred British troops on there, plus a few thousand break and Turkish. I think the last thing Syria would want to do is start a war with anyone else.

I lived there for several years, the biggest threat is the locals driving.

NomadicSpirit · 08/03/2023 13:13

Greek and Turkish I meant to say.

ChocolateHelps · 08/03/2023 13:18

Thanks everyone! No FIL isn't coming too. And we can face time him while we are there. Going in April. Can't cope with the heat of August!

Probably a stupid question...never booked thru Tui before. Do we just buy online without speaking to a real person? Just click thru each option, pay and that's it?

I think its actually in the thousands.

I love going there to play fast and loose with the rules of the road just like a local!

cyprus is my favourite place in the world and is incredibly safe. Zorbas bakery is also great

PuttingDownRoots · 08/03/2023 13:37

And you never have to worry about finding a parking space... you just create one where you want it... in a ditch, on a roundabout, in the middle of the car park...😆

Weather is quite pleasant in April. Not swimming in the sea in your bikini weather, but a hell of a lit warmer than current British temperatures. (For context... DDs school had Sports Day in March before the weather warmed up to much! Even then it was done before 11am).

Mummyme87 · 08/03/2023 13:51

Jeepers, go to Cyprus. It’s a lovely country.
