Cyprus- too close to Syria?

We're planning a week away and like the look of Cyprus. FIL is quite anxious anyway but is quite upset about the thought of us going to Cyprus because it's geographically close to Syria. We don't have to go but I don't feel it's a risk.

What do you think?

I love Cyprus so much. Can't wait to go back, better beaches than parts of the Caribbean ! They're great with children and really friendly. Had the best tan of my life when I was there.

Easy booking through TUI, just click through as you say and pay at the end or whatever payment option you're going for ! Jealous !!

We were in Cyprus in September, fabulous holiday, miles from Syria!

Coffeepot72 · 08/03/2023 18:45

There's several hundred British troops on there

Yep, Army and RAF bases. I am guessing the OP is not great at geography or current affairs!

I got flashed at as a child several times in Limassol. Put me right off.

I'd be more worried about the cockroaches and spiders. Cyprus is over-run with cockroaches. And I was naive enough to think Cyprus didn't have spiders! Fuck me they're like hairy dinner plates! 😫Like tarantulas but soft brown colour. -That's based on 25yrs experience of Cyprus.

I've lived in Cyprus for 19 years and have never given Syria a thought.

PPs are right about Zorbas and Lydiana bakeries!.

I didn't see any cockroaches, thank god they're horrible things !! Tenerife on the other hand... 😫
Truthfully though, Greece is the worst place I've been for creepy crawlies!

If FIL is that worried, get him to look at the Foreign Office website. It has a part where you can look at different countries and see what risks if any they have.

namejump · 08/03/2023 19:46

Well it has an RAF base with fighter jets and a lot of armed forces personnel if that makes you all feel better 🤷‍♀️

I think its actually in the thousands.

You're right. I've just looked it up. 3,500.

Plus the UN peacekeepers (1009 apparently).

Too close is being in the same earthquake rubble. Be glad we're not. He's sitting in the comfort of his home and worrying way too much. Tourism shouldn't suffer too.

JorisBonson · 09/03/2023 07:51

Wow 🤦🏻‍♀️

Whammyyammy · 09/03/2023 08:37

My son lives in Cyprus, I can assure you it's perfectly safe from being close to Syria

Probably a stupid question...never booked thru Tui before. Do we just buy online without speaking to a real person? Just click thru each option, pay and that's it?

Yes, just keep clicking through and pay at the end, you should get an email acknowledgement but iirc it may not be straightaway
