Smoking on Holiday

Dianehb · 09/02/2023 23:10

Which is the best country in Europe to go on Holiday that is smoking friendly? My husband and I are 20 a day cigarette smokers and my 2 daughters smoke about 15 a day each as well. We really miss our cigarettes if we cannot smoke regularly due to restrictions in hotels etc. We don't expect to smoke indoors, but we enjoy smoking on hotel balconies and by the pool and in outdoor bars etc.

Most if not all European countries?

Thisisitforme · 09/02/2023 23:28

Morocco
You can smoke in restaurants bars clubs
Practically anywhere
Only places you can't are big food chains like McDonald
Loved having a meal in a restaurant and not having to get up and go outside to smoke

SunshineLoving · 09/02/2023 23:35

Probably most of Europe.

Dianehb · 09/02/2023 23:44

How much are cigarettes in Morocco? We usually buy cigarettes for the fortnight we are there and then bring some back home, so cheap cigarettes are very useful for our holiday expenditure.

I used to buy from duty free
And smoke them there
And then buy on the way back too
And buying them in Morocco itself is pretty cheap
Can't remember the prices now
I quit about a year ago

Thisisitforme · 09/02/2023 23:49

You can smoke in some hotel lobby's and stuff as well
They're super relaxed about smoking

DuplicateUserName · 09/02/2023 23:51

I can't help thinking the OP wanted everyone to get all frothy and riled up about smoking, hence them detailing the (irrelevant) amounts they all smoke 😆

I'm waiting for her to say her daughters are 12 and 14

Serbia, Croatia or Montenegro
Is practically compulsory to smoke 😆
Even inside is usually allowed in a designated, quite large, area.
S & M generally cheaper for everything including cigarettes than Croatia.
I’d expect anywhere in Eastern Europe to have a similar idea about smoking. IIRC last time I bought some a 20 pack was about €2-3 ish, less if local brand. Duty free lady also said to me last time at Tesla airport, well you can buy as many as you think the Uk won’t notice, sod your 1 200 pack per boarding card limit 😆

whatsonyoured · 09/02/2023 23:54

Anywhere in the Balkans or Greece

Or twins named Benson and Hedges 😂

avamiah · 10/02/2023 00:00

I don’t smoke but you can smoke on a outdoor balcony I’m sure of .
I remember going on a cruise with my mum and we had a outside cabin with balcony with table and chairs and she smoked to her hearts content.

Silent judgement from the masses is much more likely I feel!

I started this thread because we went to Tenerife just before Christmas and found that most Hotels had a fairly strict smoking policy such as No smoking on hotel balconies, outdoor restaurants, pool bars, sunbeds etc. Not so good if your family are regular smokers.
So Morocco, Greece and the Balkans seem to be a lot better.

Nice thing about Tenerife though is that cigs are really cheap at about 35 Euros a carton, although you can only bring 200 a person back.

Maybe because a lot of Brits holiday there and they don't want to piss off their clientele?

Maybe choose somewhere that is less popular with Brits?

It's a new law in Tenerife, and all of Spain. Even smoking on the beach is banned now. It came in in January but some hotels have designated areas for a while now.

Most EU countries are the same. Smoking outside is fine but most hotels are strict around pool etc

RampantIvy · 10/02/2023 11:20

I didn't realise @Mumsafan. Thinking of booking a break to Tenerife anyway.

Exactly 🤢

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/02/2023 13:06

You can't smoke inside in Greece, but you can outside. In practice a lot of businesses turn a blind eye to people smoking unless someone else complains. We didn't even know and asked for a different table when we were seated next to a bloke smoking at a restaurant. The owners went and had a word with him to stop (he was Greek) and were then falling over backwards to ensure we were happy. They must have thought we would report them.

CombatBarbie · 10/02/2023 16:28

Turkey, Spain all fine, think I paid €108 for 900 in Turkey in and out. Just got 400 for €70 in Spain but were cheaper in the shops.

I was doing this. And wondering how much of a pain in the arse it must be to have to consider your ability to smoke when you book a trip away anywhere.

Roundles · 10/02/2023 18:13

I am completely fascinated by this. Cigarettes in UK are like £12 a pack no? And you buy a pack every day?! Boggled at the idea of that actually being affordable, wild.
