Big birthday next year and would like to have a family holiday away as a celebration. I’ve been to Thailand a couple of times and love it so tempted to take the kids but also would like to see somewhere new.

Australia is pushing it I think as that would be way too much. I don’t really like anything too touristy but also a wimp so not too far off the beaten track!

Any suggestions?

Japan :) Very family friendly and safe.

Malaysia.
KL and then Langkawi. Or the other way around.

Sorry did not read that properly 😆

South Africa, or Malaysia.

Lovetotravel123 · 24/01/2023 16:10

Costa Rica for the wildlife.

ScatteredMama82 · 24/01/2023 16:12

Japan is apparently fantastic, really family friendly and safe. We're considering it for next year with 2 kids.

mathanxiety · 24/01/2023 16:14

YY to amazing Costa Rica.

Daisymaker · 24/01/2023 16:26

Thanks for the suggestions. Japan is popular with my kids! Id like to go but it’s not too off my list. I’d love to go to loads of places in America but I’m put off by the fact they’re in America!
I’d absolutely love to do Costa Rica. Has any one been with primary age kids? Is it ok to explore or more of a case of tours and resorts ?

Sri Lanka.
Lovely beaches, loads to see, elephant sanctuary, monkeys and fruit bats everywhere.

VickerishAllsort · 24/01/2023 19:00

Canada, exploring in an RV.

reluctantbrit · 24/01/2023 22:14

If you can swap to Easter holidays, we went twice to the Caribbean, St. Lucia and Barbados, when DD was 7 and 9. Loved it.

US national park trip with a Orlando trip at the end?

We looked at Costa Rica, I can't do it for health reasons, but it would definitely tick all DD's boxes.

ThirdTimeIsTheCharm · 24/01/2023 22:17

What time of the year? Some parts of the world will have raining season, other winter , this is critical to pick up destination.

KronkeyCroc · 25/01/2023 11:47

Well my birthday is April so was thinking the Easter hols. But would ultimately be determined by the season of chosen destination.

Would love to explore Canada. I went to Vancouver a few years ago and loved it.

tempted by Sri Lanka. Need to look into that to see if the political situation has calmed down now.

thanks all. Keep them coming!

We went to Costa Rica with our 5 year old at Christmas, we did it all independently with 3 different bases. There was plenty to entertain her, we did a mix of beach and jungle. Lots of hikes (she's a good walker), wildlife, hot springs. We even took her river tubing. Even things like the coffee/chocolate tour we did were interactive for kids.

Sri Lanka is next on our list

Peccary · 25/01/2023 15:01

CR is expensive though.

KronkeyCroc · 25/01/2023 16:10

Yeah this is my worry. I think Costa Rica could be bonkers expensive. A few years ago I was thinking blow the budget once in a life
time sort of thing but since the cost of living crisis and inflation I’m a bit too nervous too go that mad. We will need to remortgage and our fixed rate energy cap ends in August which is going to be a real shock to the system. We’ve savings and earn a good wage but we’re not mega well off. I won’t get into debt for it.

I guess I’ll just have to investigate and price up the preferred options and see what we can afford.

We’re in the midst of planning a Costa Rica trip for us and our 3 year old right now and it doesn’t seem too expensive.

Obviously won’t know the full cost until we get there but flights, accommodation and car hire for 3 weeks seem reasonable compared to other trips we’ve done. Everything I’ve read has said it’s a great place to travel with kids, we’re not staying anywhere majorly upmarket and travelling around from place to place.

Japan is the top of our list for in a few years time.

gogohmm · 25/01/2023 16:24

Sri Lanka, amazing country, easy to travel around as not too big. Can recommend some excellent hotels

gogohmm · 25/01/2023 16:27

The political situation is ok, tourists are very much welcomed and even when there were protests they were some of politest riots ever seen (they even tidied up after storming the palace!) outside of Colombo the main issue is poverty, you can help simply by visiting and spending money

Syppox2000 · 25/01/2023 16:38

We did Costa Rica last summer with a 6 and 9 year old and our friends with similar aged kids . I posted our itinerary and photos on another post recently .
we had an awesome time . We used a private driver company the whole way (same price as car rental for ourselves ).
Theres loads of companies who do it and we shopped round for best quote once we knew our itinerary .

KronkeyCroc · 25/01/2023 17:38

Are you booking everything separately or through travel agent@Rainydayparade ?

I’ve heard it’s good for kids. Good to hear it’s not too expensive to get there).
