Where in Tenerife sounds like the place we want to be?

Never been to Tenerife, might try to see if we can get a break there in the next couple of months.

An suggestions re resorts please? No children. Like it to be lively, but not rowdy, with a choice of good bars ans restaurants, but we don't need clubs. Ideally pretty, with places to stroll to of an evening. Also a good base to explore other parts of the island from.
We've enjoyed places like Puerto de Mogan, Port de Soller, Nerja, Lagos, Funchal if that helps give you an idea of what we like.

Thanks

I can’t think of anywhere like that on Tenerife, but Portinax in Ibiza is similar.

stevalnamechanger · 13/01/2023 08:14

There is a nice part of Tenerife that's not tacky, around the Royal corales hideaway area which is adults only .

Amazongirl9 · 13/01/2023 08:23

Costa Adeje - Guayarmina Princess is lively or Playa Del Durque - Riu Arecas, a bit further along the coast is a bit quieter.

Amazongirl9 · 13/01/2023 08:27

But they aren’t pretty and villagey like Port de Soller or Lagos though.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/01/2023 08:29

Thank you. Just to clarify my OP : 'no children'.means we will have no children with us - the resort/hotel doesn't have to be adult only!

Puerto de la Cruz.

It's in the north, it's not concrete/built up like parts of the south, very leafy, lots of banana trees, pretty chilled but lots of bars and restaurants. Very walkable, there's a botanical garden. Doesn't feel too resort like.

flossingtonbroadway · 13/01/2023 08:33

Agree with peurto de la cruz. If you like puerto mogan think youd like it. (Also sorry if ive posted twice, cant see my first message!)

YoungTeashe · 13/01/2023 08:38

Puerto Palace is a great hotel in PDC. Not many kids, not kid focused. We've been and it's very chilled.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2023 08:45

Bear in mind that the weather might not be as good in the north, especially in March/April. There's a reason why most of the tourist resorts are in the south.

Costa Adeje might suit, but that's where the more upmarket AI hotels are, so there might not be the choice of restaurants you want. But if you stay at the more north/west end of CA, you could always walk into La Caleta, which might be more what you're looking for, or you could actually stay there.

Does it have to be Tenerife? Playa Blanca in Lanzarote might also be the sort of place you're looking for.

Amazongirl9 · 13/01/2023 08:54

Going on the list of places that you like, not Tenerife, but maybe for another time, Rovinj in Croatia is absolutely gorgeous.

disconnecteddrifter · 13/01/2023 08:56

We just stayed in los gigantes. Lots of hikes and cycling.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/01/2023 08:59

No, not necessarily, just we've never been to Tenerife before so thought it would be good to try somewhere different and thought the Canaries would be more likely to be warm earlier in the year. Will look at the places suggested, thanks all

I'm going to tenerife but having trouble deciding on a hotel. I've decided I like one on playa de Las Americas. Wanted costa adeje but AI very expensive for buffet only. If I do AI I want some a la carte options. So hard to decide!

We definitely don't want AI as we enjoy trying different restaurants. Don't mind staying in a hotel that offers AI, as long as it is possible to buy lunch if we wanted a pool day or dinner I'd we'd been out all day and just fancied staying in for dinner. So am guessing that would be the sort of place you're talking about that offers both AI and a La carte

If you are going in the next couple of months, I really wouldn’t go to the north of the island, ie Puerto de La Cruz, or Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as they will be colder than the south and west. The north can be quite chilly until about June.

Also, I would avoid Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos (in the south) as they are very built up, full of pubs and pizza places, so quite rowdy really. The big hotels on the west coast are very nice but tend not to be in pretty little villages, however you can walk by the sea and get lovely views of La Gomera - an island to the west.

If you do go to Tenerife, you must either hire a car or take a tour up to the volcanic Mount Teide. It is stunning! At 12,200’, it is the highest mountain in Spain and the views are spectacular, especially if you can get the cable car to the top. A drive to the north of the island, up across the lava fields and then down through the forests, is fascinating too!

Try this place
Hotel Vincci Selección La Plantación del Sur It’s up the hill in Costa adeje

midsomermurderess · 13/01/2023 12:28

What about Madeira? Any number of hotels to choose from in and around Funchal which is a buzzy little city. It’s a lovey island, very green, pretty vernacular architecture, decent day trips. The weather will be mild, but maybe a sweater in the evenings.

Winterwonderland4 · 13/01/2023 12:43

I wonder if El Medano would meet your needs. Not sure how lively it is on a night but was busy in the day when we did a day trip there. Nice beach, quite a few restaurants and a really nice feel to the place.

As pp said if you go to playa de las Americas and base yourself in the upmarket bit near playa del duque you are well out if the rowdy area whilst still having promenade walks in both directions. We stayed in the Royal Sunset Beach club and the location and complex were great. Food and entertainment available on site but board was self catering. We booked flights and accom separately

We love Madeira and it's definitely an option, but asking about Tenerife as it's somewhere we've never been and we like to explore new places.

I wouldn't really bother with Tenerife tbh - we loved Madeira as well, and found Tenerife a big disappointment. It's very different to Madeira, not as lush, and it's very concretey and built up. If you do go, I second the suggestion to hire a car - we enjoyed driving up to Teide as well, and found some nice little villages up there too.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/01/2023 19:58

Sounds like Tenerife isn't the place for us then. I'd understood that there were some lovely parts, but seems not to be the case for winter sun at least.

I've been to northern Tenerife in feb 3 times, it's been 22-25 degrees when we've been there, which is fine for us. Depends how warm you want it.

TippledPink · 13/01/2023 20:03

We go to Tenerife every year and stay in the same hotel. We go to Gran Tacande in Costa Adeje. It is the upmarket end of town, we always go breakfast only as the breakfast is amazing and we love to go and try the different restaurants. The nearby restaurants are pricier but if you walk left along the sea front a few minutes you will come to Torvisca and there are lots of well priced restaurants there.

Also just to add we go in March normally and weather is good, a little colder in the evening though so I tend to wear a cardigan then. We also go for the organised walks, it is beautiful up in the mountains.
