How much will you spend on holidays in 2023?

Just starting to plan for holidays for next year!

I'm hoping to keep things under 3k for flights, accomodation and car rental for a couple weeks for a family of 3. We also have a campervan so we go for a lot of weekends away in that but any cost just comes out of our weekly spending money. Last year we had 3 holidays and spent roughly 14k, I don't feel great about it after adding it all up so I'm really looking to cut back this year!

Just curious what other people plan to spend if anyone is happy to share. Any holiday ninjas out there that manage to have amazing holidays on a budget?

87k. It is an exceptional year, but a perfect illustration of why it really doesn’t matter what other people are doing.

Yoyo2021 · 27/12/2022 12:32

Oh gosh my budget is 1000/1200 for me and my child if I can get a package holiday in Europe…. Here’s hoping!

That's great, no doubt you have some amazing things planned! My husband and I spent similar back in 2012 on our round the world trip although the cost was shared between the two of us. It was a lot but I'd never regret the money spent!

Nothing! Can’t even afford to visit my parents in Spain this year (just flight costs as we stay with them).

Lesina · 27/12/2022 12:35

Probably 15k same every year.

IncompleteSenten · 27/12/2022 12:38

Somewhere between nothing and fuck all 😁but I hope those of you who can afford one have a grand time - enjoy some sun and have a drink for me!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 27/12/2022 12:39

We are tight on time and to a degree on money this year. Just pricing up 4/5 night in Berlin, will come in between £1000-1200 for two adults, two teens, plus meals/spending.

laurwalsh · 27/12/2022 12:41

Around 15k for one two week holiday in Europe family of four

FeltCarrot · 27/12/2022 12:42

Possibly up to £20k. We have already booked flights for 4 to Canada for a family event, still need to book and pay for accommodation and trips etc. Thinking of a Norwegian cruise, and we are going to Venice for an event for DH. We also have an annual weekend away with a large group of friends and anything else we can squeeze in.
We are very lucky, early retirees and covid put a stop to some trips which we are hoping to now rebook.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/12/2022 12:52

What matters is if you can afford it without borrowing and what that value is will depend on your household budget. If you earn NMW then you'll have a smaller budget for leisure than someone who earns £500K.

Looking at ONS stats in 2019 we spent £62325 million on oversea trips so just under £1K per person. But that's the mean, suspect the median will be lower.

userxx · 27/12/2022 12:55

Not much at all as I'm not tied to school holidays.

QueenWenceslas · 27/12/2022 12:55

Family of four, two holidays booked so far.

Menorca for the first two weeks of August, self catering package of flights and accommodation £3,700.

9 nights in Tenerife for October half term, another self catering package as above £3,300.

Budgeting about another £3.5K spending money across these holidays for food, drinks and excursions.

MintyPrincess · 27/12/2022 12:56

8k.will be paid off in 6 months.
3 weeks 5 star A.I Egypt and 1 week 5 star A.I Antalya

Decafflatteplease · 27/12/2022 12:58

None as can't afford it!

Well I'm away for one night to visit a friend but only cost will be train fare and half a takeaway.

AfterEightMintyCedric · 27/12/2022 13:02

Absolutely gobsmacked at the amounts mentioned on here, but good luck to you...if I could afford it I would!

At the moment I'm not planning to spend anything...just become self-employed after 2.5 years caring for elderly parents and DD will hopefully be off to uni in September so any spare cash will be going on that.

I have a writers festival booked for May where I'm hoping to pitch my first novel...if that goes freakishly well and/or my business takes off more rapidly than I'm anticipating then I'll look at a European city break around the £1.5k mark for me and DD next Christmas.

refuge123 · 27/12/2022 13:03

Probably a bus ticket to the countryside or something

Tiredalwaystired · 27/12/2022 13:07

£800 on my daughters school trip plus the cost of four Eurostar tickets to Belgium in the summer to stay with friends.

we had a major refurb of the house plus an expensive holiday this year so next year it is time to rein it all in!

nancydroo · 27/12/2022 13:08

1.3k for a week

Shocked at prices like these. We have paid £1400 for a week in Fuerteventura for 3 at a 4* all inclusive on similar dates! In excess of 3k for self catering is crazy

JustFrustrated · 27/12/2022 13:20

Probably about 10k.

Already got a few 3/4 day trips booked

Krakow with 2 friends.
Spain with the children for 4 days.
London for a long weekend for DH and I.
A European cruise with the kids.

Thinking of Japan for a week.
Probably another European long weekend
Then winter sun come October/November.

Choconut · 27/12/2022 13:21

Just totted up that we've spent about £3000 on easyjet flights and probably another £2500 on airbnb's and booking.com. We've got 7 short haul holidays booked (a couple are weekends in Edinburgh/France though). Since we paid the mortgage off our number of holidays a year has gone up considerably - although I always look for cheap flights and reasonably priced airbnb's.

I'd want two years travelling around the world non stop for 87k!

Reluctantadult · 27/12/2022 13:28

Blimey. Shocked by the money and the amount of flying tbh. Shows how much I'm in my own echo chamber.

We are £3.5k total for a week in Scotland and a week in Devon, family of 4.

chocolateasaltyballs22 · 27/12/2022 13:29

About £10k between us. Three holidays for me, two for husband.

userh79 · 27/12/2022 13:40

Around £12,000 in 2023, Florida (Disney World & Universal) family of 4.

YoBeaches · 27/12/2022 13:55

Not sure so interesting to read these posts. We have 3.5 yr old and starts school in September so I've been trying to work out how holiday spend will change.

2022 we did about 5k which was one week Canary's 4* all inclusive and two weeks in France cabin/holiday park at Lake Annecy, plus a long weekend music festival.

I don't think £5k would buy the same this year generally due to rising costs.
