How much will you spend on holidays in 2023?

Just starting to plan for holidays for next year!

I'm hoping to keep things under 3k for flights, accomodation and car rental for a couple weeks for a family of 3. We also have a campervan so we go for a lot of weekends away in that but any cost just comes out of our weekly spending money. Last year we had 3 holidays and spent roughly 14k, I don't feel great about it after adding it all up so I'm really looking to cut back this year!

Just curious what other people plan to spend if anyone is happy to share. Any holiday ninjas out there that manage to have amazing holidays on a budget?

We've already booked one for £12k (not including spending money which will probably be 4-5k). Looking in the sales now for another smaller one, about 8k and a few weekend breaks that will probably end up about the same. Last year we went overboard, but it was our honeymoon for one of them. About 50k last year - lots of making up for covid lockdowns and no travelling for two years!

50k 😱 you are very lucky 👍 our income isn't even 50k 😂

ChicagoBears · 27/12/2022 15:33

We had 6 holidays this year so we spent close to £25k but this was an exceptional year.

Next year it’ll be 1 or 2 holidays max.

Not everyone lives in poverty and there are plenty who can afford holidays.

The thread is not in bad taste at all, this is a general forum site with many topics, perhaps join a forum where only people in poverty speak about their lives if you wish?

If people didnt get their feelings from what others are doing in their lives perhaps people wouldnt be so unhappy, some of the figures on here are eye watering, it doesnt change my perception of myself and my life though.

Thanks for your concern but I can afford multiple holidays if I want them and we do have one planned and booked already next year. I just don’t choose to come on here (or any thread on any site) and talk about how much I spend on them. I’ve got no axe to grind as we are lucky to be comfortably off, but it makes me cringe to read about some people spending the equivalent of a house deposit on one holiday or even a year’s worth when others can’t afford to buy food for their kids. Surely the joy in talking about holidays is to discuss the trips/destinations rather than how much is spent on them? I really don’t see how it can be anything other than a stealth brag otherwise, however you like to dress it up…

shivawn · 27/12/2022 15:54

I thought I was spending a crazy amount but there are a lot of big figures here! I guess it makes sense that a lot of posters who frequent the holiday board will prioritise travel and be happy to pay the price!

Compared to this years holiday, family of four, 2 weeks in the Maldives plus an other expensive hoiday that our son took, next years will be a lot cheaper. We have booked for middle of June to Tunisia A/I 4* 2 weeks, coming in at around £5,000. We will need to add to that though for things like airport lounge, car parking etc. Next year we are also having one of our bathrooms refitted so that is taking precedence.

DingDangMintyBells · 27/12/2022 15:58

@Abeachsomewhere i find the prices interesting, we are too British about money in real life. It is useful to see what is available at different price points. If you can’t discuss it on an anonymous forum where can you?

TokyoSushi · 27/12/2022 16:01

£4K Feb skiing
£1K May Cornwall
Approx £3.5K 10 nights Europe Summer

Secretstory · 27/12/2022 16:05

Couple of weekend breaks at Haven booked total for both of them including spends less than £1000.
Disneyland paris with a few extra days in Paris £3000 all in.
That would be our normal spend most years but next year going to Lapland at Xmas for around £5000. Been saving for ages for this and wanted children at 'right' ages.
We are a family of 5.

bibbif · 27/12/2022 16:06

I'm young & dispute earning well we can't afford thousands on holidays. mortgage & childcare costs eat into income considerably.

userh79 · 27/12/2022 16:08

@DingDangMintyBells I find it interesting too, nobody here knows anyone, it's not personal. I always find financial threads interesting, have done since we were low income, because it's just not something that's spoken about in person, what's the harm online? If someone is feeling that hard up I'm assuming they wouldn't click on a holiday thread if it would affect them.

@Secretstory So exciting! Do you mind me asking what ages your kids are? This is something I'd love to do in the future!

£1000 holiday cottage with in laws

However we're saving for Australia in 2024

TheChosenTwo · 27/12/2022 16:15

I don’t really know, I’m going on a girls weekend to Bruges and booked a long weekend in Paris with my best friend. Family wise we have 2 weeks in Portugal (accommodation booked and paid for but not flights yet, family of 5 but 4 adults and one 11 year old), will do a week somewhere in this country in April and probably a cheapie week in October half term. Dh and I may also do a week abroad just the two of us in November. No idea what any of it will cost yet, most of our holidays happen during the school holidays which instantly makes them 3,963 times more expensive!

Cheerfulpedantry · 27/12/2022 16:16

Open mouthed at how much some of you spend on hols!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/12/2022 16:18

I think it will be around £20,000 including some long weekends in Europe.

wineandsunshine · 27/12/2022 16:19

Meh...I wish we could afford a family holiday!

6 of us so it's crazy money plus I am a teacher so term time is out. My son is desperate to go on a plane 😞

teenagetantrums · 27/12/2022 16:22

We will be spending about 5k going to Vegas ..but we going to get married there so actually that's saving us money really. Then probably about another £1k on a couple of short breaks.
Normally we spend about £3k. Year but there is just two of us no dependants at home any more.

Heatherbell1978 · 27/12/2022 16:23

Family of 4 - DCs are 5 and 8. Local trip at Easter at a cost of £600, Turkey all- inclusive in summer at cost of £4500 and we'll probably do a local weekend away in October which will be around £700. A couple of Center Parcs trips too so maybe £7.5k total which is normal for us.

upfucked · 27/12/2022 16:23

Sunsetintheeast · 27/12/2022 12:29

87k. It is an exceptional year, but a perfect illustration of why it really doesn’t matter what other people are doing.

Oooh where are you going?

2.5k winter week in Lanzarote

Around £500 I imagine at Butlins for a long weekend and hotel either side. We’ve never been before. I’ve heard its a bit rough but I’m sure the kids will love it.

We were thinking of we week in Balearics at the end of September but it looking like an expensive year so that may not happen.

lanbro · 27/12/2022 16:26

Paris booked for Easter, flights and accommodation approx £1500 for 6, but self catering and need to book Disney so will need quite a bit more!

Turkey booked for August, 9 nights AI £3700 for 5.

I'll keep an eye out for bargains but hoping for Feb half term and Oct half term, last minute hopefully so approximately £1800 for 3 of us

Tinytigertail · 27/12/2022 16:54

£20k for a summer break, a week in half term with family and a couple of long weekends. Cost does not include spending money.

monsteronahill · 27/12/2022 16:59

@Decafflatteplease a mixture of hard work and inheritance - definitely not a normal year for us!! I don't earn 50k a year either 😂

Tiltedandwilted · 27/12/2022 17:01

£20k planned for this year, but these are big trips we have saved up for.

We typically spend about £7-£10k as a family of 3

MummyDummyNow · 27/12/2022 14:41

Completely agree with @Abeachsomewhere incredibly bad taste given the current climate. People on here can't afford heating, food, Christmas...

Terrible stealth brag.

To be frank, between this thread and the media reports about the post Christmas sales, seems like "choosing between heating and eating" was just a sensationalist media soundbite. Or maybe the truth is somewhere in between.
