Where would you go? Shortfall for 3 nights.
we like places which are scenic, friendly, nice cafe culture, some shops, a little sightseeing. Have done Rome, Venice, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris and love them all but would like to try somewhere different.
Considering Berlin as have been told it’s wonderful but I need convincing as from googling it seems quite museum and military history orientated. Also considering Iceland but would 3 nights be too short? Any ideas for somewhere different? We’d be traveling next summer so probably would avoid cities that would be too hot that time of year.

Munich. Has plenty of cafes and the Bierkellers are great too.
DH and I spent a few days there one summer and had a brilliant time.

MissAmbrosia · 13/11/2022 11:22

Munich is fab. Budapest. Nice - we were there a few weeks ago and loads to do. Krakow or Wroclaw in Poland. Oslo - would love to go in the summer as we went in Feb. Wine is expensive though. Lisbon? Antwerp has nice shops, and lots of lovely squares to sit on.

A mini break without kids sounds amazing. Jealous! Go places that are not kid friendly. Boutique hotels, late bars and museums would be on my list (already planning for about 15 years in the future!)

Vienna is lovely or Seville.

Vanillalime · 13/11/2022 17:45

Munich was my first thought so I’m glad others also suggested it. I’ve been in both summer & winter & it would be a great choice for a 3 day break.

Ive also been to Berlin and had a good time but Munich was much better in my opinion. There is a massive shopping street, beer halls with music, lovely gardens. We also hopped on a train to Mittenwald at the foot of the Bavarian Alps.

Another option could be Krakow. Lots to see & do there to fill 3 days.

mummyh2016 · 13/11/2022 17:48

I was going to suggest Seville however we went in June and it was hot, it would be unbearable July/August.
I've not been but I've got friends who went to Iceland and they said it was ridiculously expensive. Like £40 for a pub meal, a sort of meal you round pay £10 for in this country.

Funchal, stay at the Royal Savoy

Olivetreebutter · 13/11/2022 17:52

Berlin is what you make of it!
I'd also recommend Warsaw, we loved it there, but definitely worth taking a tour into the old communist workers areas rather than staying just close to the old town.

jonnyjannoo · 13/11/2022 17:58

We went to Berlin pre kids and I loved it. It's absolutely fascinating but also very cool.
DH and I went to Porto earlier this year and it was fabulous. It's beautiful, lots to do but also a fab place for just sitting by the river with a beer and taking in the surroundings. It's pretty reasonable price-wise too. Highly recommend.

Prague? Vienna? Budapest?

ChillinwiththeVillains · 13/11/2022 18:02

Valencia is just gorgeous but maybe too hot in full summer (nice river bed park leading from town centre to fab big meueum/set gallery, lcoely tapas scene), Budapest (amazing thermal baths, history, nice cafes and bars and Sziget festival if you time it right) or Stockholm (outdoor lidos in town centre, cool museums and lovely cafe tradition of cake and coffee).

Waterfallstop · 13/11/2022 18:03

I loved Berlin. Not been but heard good things about Lisbon.

mushroom3 · 13/11/2022 18:03

Plovdiv in Bulgaria is great for a mini break

CanYouFeelMyHeart · 13/11/2022 18:06

Athens!

user1487194234 · 13/11/2022 18:08

Loved Bilbao

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/11/2022 18:13

Budapest. Leon. Krakow. All lovely.

grayhairdontcare · 13/11/2022 18:17

Definitely Budapest

QueenOfTheMetaverse · 13/11/2022 18:54

Vienna or Budapest

reluctantbrit · 13/11/2022 20:42

We loved Lisbon and Prague.

Berlin - that's like saying London is all about the Tower and Buckingham Palace. There is a lot and 3 days is not a huge amount to do.

rookiemere · 13/11/2022 20:44

Dubrovnik- we went in September and stayed in a lovely hotel with beach access at Lapad a bus ride away from the centre. Was like having a beach holiday and city break combined.

SarahMused · 13/11/2022 20:47

In summer Stockholm is lovely. You can take boat trips round the archipelago, there’s a great cafe culture and lots of museums, many of them free.

YukoandHiro · 13/11/2022 20:53

Granada

jackstini · 13/11/2022 21:06

Krakow was our first mini break after kids - beautiful city, loads to do, not to expensive. Loved it

CoolShoeshine · 13/11/2022 22:08

Thank you for so many fab suggestions. I’m drawn to Munich, we weren’t to Salzburg many moons ago and loved it and I’m thinking Munich may have a similar feel?
Budapest and Prague also seem to fit the bill of the types of place we’d like.
Lisbon, Porto and Seville definitely on my mental list for another time when it’s not summer.
Will have to start pricing things up. DCs are strongly suggesting they would like to come too so we’ll probably cave and make it a family trip!

I loved Berlin and didn't go to a museum!
Did do a history tour because why wouldn't you. I'm not normally into history but I found it breathtaking.
We also did;

  • cocktails up the radio tower
  • streetfood Christmas market
  • shops
  • walk along museum island and the river
