New York Hotel

Hi
Looking at visiting New York in February but I don't have much geographic knowledge of the city Blush. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good place to stay?

We will spend most days walking, eating and drinking Grin. Would like to see the sights, maybe a museum or two and some shopping. We are planning 4 nights and would budget £100 a night but could increase!

Thank you all.

i was about 120 a night in Jan this year for the new yorker on 8th avenue across from penn station

scarediecat · 06/09/2022 19:51

@chipsandpeas yes, I think you're right!

And I think it’s usually room only, breakfast will be extra.
if you’re thinking of going to a diner , they’re expensive too!

new York usually means Manhattan island.

you could stay on the New Jersey side or the Brooklyn side, may be cheaper.

I’ve just looked at a place we stayed ( room only ) at 304 E 42nd St, New York, NY 10017, United States. It used to be a Hilton I think, now a westgate.
$179 a night in Feb ‘23

Thanks @tanstaafl

I've just had a quick browse online. Quite liked the Sonder Duane Street for just over £500. No food but we can eat breakfast frugally!

check out the holiday inn express on W36th street, its round the corner from macys and the empire state building, plenty of subway stops close by and breakfast is included, ive stayed there twice this year and going back in october

The New York forum on tripadvisor is great to ask questions like this. They'll give you a good range of options.

We stayed there in December 2019 for 6 nights. I don't know prices now but at the time I got it much cheaper through Expedia than the actual prices on the hotels website

scarediecat · 06/09/2022 21:22

Ok thanks! I'll check.

No food but we can eat breakfast frugally! That's what I thought beide I went to NYC last week. I was repeatedly told before I went how expensive it was- I'm not a big spender, and we ate very little, but managed to spend ££££££ very quickly and easily.

The hotel you're considering looks good to me, I would say avoid 8th Avenue and anywhere near Times Square / Port Authority. I got a deal through BA, but that does limit you to certain hotels - it depends if you can find a cheap flight you want. The best one for me was with BA, so I just went with one of their hotel deals and ended up paying not much more than the flight itself would have cost.

scarediecat · 06/09/2022 22:16

@LynetteScavo ... I know it's going to be expensive- I have no illusions on that front!

We actually have pretty much free flights due to my avios point and companion vouchers. This would be like an extra holiday, so I'm trying to limit extra spending where possible.

I have no issue with getting bread, cheese and fruit from a supermarket to do us for breakfast and then spend our on lunch and dinner.

I am swayed by that hotel, the tripadvisor reviews look good too!

I stayed at a Holiday Inn a few weeks ago as well. Booked 2021, and for a double room (single use) it was just under 150 a night. Would’ve been slightly higher for 2 people. That’s cheap for NYC, the hotel was very basic. You’ll have to increase your budget sadly.

Hilton Garden Inn Long Island City. Not in Manhattan but only a couple of stops away on the subway. Great location - Really easy to get downtown. Within walking distance to different subway lines, safe neighbourhood and not too loud at night.

sparklecement · 07/09/2022 07:18

If you are on Facebook, join NYC the place to be. We are going in February 2023. Hotels are a minefield. I’d say if you see something you like and a price that you se happy with book it and then forget about hotels.

sparklecement · 07/09/2022 07:19

And just in case you aren’t aware, don’t do air B and B. It’s illegal in Manhattan.

Loveduvetdays · 07/09/2022 07:51

We got back from NY a couple of days ago. We flew with Norse, the new airline. It was great value for money. Return flights for £400. We stayed mid town Manhattan. Be prepared for how expensive food is. Glass of wine typically $14. Also menu prices exclude tax and also the 18% obligatory tip. You can't get a sandwich for less than $10. The subway is great - $33 a week for unlimited use, so may be better to stay uptown and get cheaper hotel. We had a great time, definitely worth it. Enjoy your vacation 🙂

We are just back from NYC. We stayed in the financial district in the south of Manhattan and would recommend it. Much quieter , cleaner and close to the water which was lovely in the hot weather. Midtown is very busy and can be quite overwhelming . We said we’d stay in an apartment if possible next time as our hotel didn’t have fridge or kettle and nyc is v expensive.

Benjispruce4 · 10/09/2022 22:27

We flew with Aer Lingus Heathrow via Shannon. Saved £200 on each flight and cleared customs in Ireland.
We used the bus in NYC. Only $3 each from top to bottom of Manhattan and air conditioned and not busy. The subway was unbearably hot and felt unsafe.

Benjispruce4 · 10/09/2022 22:29

We stayed sun Holiday Inn in financial district.btw. Views over the Hudson from 47th floor were awesome.

Benjispruce4 · 10/09/2022 22:39

Didn’t see many supermarkets op.A few 7-11s

tanstaafl · 11/09/2022 08:07

We use Whole Foods Market stores for lunch and dinner in USA.
great choice, hot and cold, pay by weight if you pick your own, or have pre made sandwiches, pasta dishes.

they have a seating area inside with free Wi-Fi.
