Hi
Looking at visiting New York in February but I don't have much geographic knowledge of the city Blush. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good place to stay?

We will spend most days walking, eating and drinking Grin. Would like to see the sights, maybe a museum or two and some shopping. We are planning 4 nights and would budget £100 a night but could increase!

Thank you all.

@@sparklecement I looked at that and looks like it's not running anymore...last post was pre Covid!

We stayed at the best western hospitality house, east 49th street in a 2 roomed apartment with a well equipped kitchen - i can’t remember exactly how much we paid (2017) but it seemed pretty reasonable at the time, and was a really handy location x

Following this thread for ideas as I have just been gifted a trip to NY for my birthday- going in April so plenty time to save some £££ for food and trips 😀

CatsVacation · 11/09/2022 11:06

We stayed at the Belvedere Hotel near 48th/8th. There was a brilliant diner around the corner opposite a fire station for breakfast.

Benjispruce4 · 11/09/2022 21:38

@jumpingwithjoy you lucky thing! There are so many free things to do(Highline, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, 9/11 memorial. It’s just the food and drink that’s pricey. I hear April is a great time. We had fan weather late August/September. Just one v humid day, the others were hot but clear blue skies and breezy.

jumpingwithjoy · 11/09/2022 22:01

@Benjispruce4 thank you, I'm sooooo excited.
Love free stuff so will include ALL your suggestions in my itinerary. We are staying just off Times Square so presume we can do loads of (free) walking and people watching too
Thank you xx

Benjispruce4 · 11/09/2022 22:24

Youre welcome. I really enjoyed the Greenwich Village area near the start of the Highline. It’s where Friends is said to be set and has a quieter feel. We stayed near 9/11 memorial and that was close to the Hudson/Battery Park which was great for walks and views across to Jersey City. There are nice restrictions by the water and shopping Brooklyn’s Place .

Benjispruce4 · 11/09/2022 22:25

Restaurants not restrictions

World Center hotel, lower Manhattan.

cabin crew stay here because it’s so quiet - lovely location, subway nearby, big rooms.

get an interconnecting family room

Hi OP, New Yorker here. You've gotten some good advice. I would just add that staying far from the things you want to do is a false economy. Your time is precious, and it's nice to be able to pop back to the hotel midday if you want to.

Here's an unsolicited restaurant recommendation.

www.unionsquarecafe.com/

The food is fabulous, the service is very professional and friendly, and it's in a lovely neighborhood. It's my favorite posh meal out. Book on the website well in advance, it's very popular.

I'm happy to answer questions as you plan your trip. TIA for coming to see us. We love our British visitors.

Benjispruce4 · 12/09/2022 19:34

I looked at Union Square after your recommendation on another thread @MissConductUS but was too pricey for us.

MissConductUS · 12/09/2022 20:24

Sorry about that, @Benjispruce4 . It is a special occasion kind of place. Most restaurants in NYC have had to raise prices this year due to food and wage inflation. Fortunately, we have a lot of good restaurants at different price levels in NYC. USC is posh, no doubt about it.

Benjispruce4 · 12/09/2022 21:35

Yes it looked lovely but with two teens m/ adults in tow to pay for it was a pricey trip.. Took your advice on Juliana’s not Grimaldi’s and the queue at 9/11 memorial being shorter for pre booked . Thanks for that.

MissConductUS · 12/09/2022 23:24

You're most welcome. I'm glad the pre-booking tip was useful. It's hard to get bad pizza in NYC. Hopefully, Juliana's met your expectations.

Benjispruce4 · 13/09/2022 18:02

Oh it was sublime! We were so lucky as we turned up at 2 to no queue. Great service, very good value and the best pizza bar Amalfi street pizza. When we left, the queue was round the block!

Andrews Coffee Shop gets a good review. As does Pershing Square.

Fifth and Lexington both run north south for most of the length of Manhattan. Can we get a bit more specific on the location?

addictedtolipstick · 01/11/2022 00:23

Near Trump Tower / St Patrick's Cathedral / Rockefeller Centre area.
That's all I can give you or I'll out myself @MissConductUS 😂

Wallaw · 01/11/2022 00:33

Not the perfect location for you @addictedtolipstick but I always recommend Daily Provisions as a great place for breakfast/lunch. I think they have 4 locations now (but none in midtown). Owned by the group that owns USC, although a whole different ball game.

We stayed at the Waldorf, bit dated and old fashioned but we loved the atmosphere and the history. And the cocktail bar……

We treated ourselves to brunch at the Russian Tea Rooms. Just for one day, it was on the NY bucket list anyway.
