It's a bit too hot in Spain....where to go in 2023??

So, currently on day 8 of a 10 day all inclusive in Spain. It's hot. So hot the kids don't want to leave the complex which I get. It's also making my eldest a bit grumpy. She's happy in the pool but in all honestly I'm getting cabin fever and I think they are getting a bit bored.
Next year we were thinking of going to the vendee area for 14 nights. We did it in 2019 and we had the most amazing hol. Temp was around 28 degrees & we had the car so we could travel to beaches etc. However, I notice that Vendee is a similar temp to Spain (37degrees) this year so it could possibly cause similar problems

So, my query is this.....where should we consider for next august that will be a little cooler to allow us to explore & will be sunny but not baking hot. Happy to fly or drive. Maybe northern France but I have bad childhood memories of holidays in the rain in Brittany! Austria? Any amazing gems appreciated.

Hope you enjoy the caves. We went on our recent holiday and had a lovely day.
My advice would be to take your time, don’t be rushed. Even at the back you can still see and hear the musical bit really well. The boat trip across is short, but we liked it.
The ice creams etc aren’t expensive either.

Bickles · 14/08/2022 08:13

For nice temperatures go May and October rather than in the summer?

Thefruitbatdancer · 14/08/2022 08:14

I've been to the Middle East & Spain during the Easter holidays when it's between mid to late 20's. It's much more comfortable than the summer temperatures. Try going at Easter instead of August.

I wonder if it's just a sign of things to come. Maybe do a sunshine break in May & U.K. in august. We are restricted to school hols and my eldest only gets a week in May

How about the 2 weeks Easter hols? Following with interest as we're thinking of where to go next year buy don't want to be too hot 🥵

whiteroseredrose · 14/08/2022 08:54

Iceland was great in August.

EssexCat · 14/08/2022 08:58

We’re near Bordeaux and it’s been perfect weather. A couple of days of really hot, a few days of around 27 and now a few days of cloud and 22-24 degrees.

Have been able to sunbathe, surf, but have still had a couple of days of exploring the local area on bikes on the cooler days.

next week weather looking cooler and cloudy though so the heat isn’t guaranteed here if that’s really important to you.

mac1974 · 14/08/2022 09:11

@EssexCat that sounds the ideal temperature to me. Hope you are having a fabulous time.

It might be nice there right now but it's generally been a rough summer for those who don't like heat.

Not that long ago Bordeaux and a lot of places elsewhere in south western France were clocking 38 celsius or more as maximums for days/weeks on end and was subject to a canicule (heatwave warning). We're not a million kilometres away from Bordeaux, but much more inland and hit 40 C plus several times this summer, at least once in the last week...

www.ladepeche.fr/2022/06/16/alerte-canicule-toulouse-bordeaux-perpignan-quels-sont-les-endroits-ou-il-va-faire-le-plus-chaud-aujourdhui-en-france-10370508.php

Most most importantly that info of course is of absolutely zero value when it comes to predicting the weather there to any degree of accuracy for this time next summer.

We were there for two weeks until the end of July- blissful. Enjoy the rest of your holiday

I take it you grow your own food, don’t drive, don’t take public transport, never buy anything new and never use your heating / electric?

Oh, for heaven’s sake. Stopping flying is one of the top two things you can do to help combat climate change (the other being have one less child). It’s not actually a huge ask given you can have holidays without it. The whole what-aboutery when it comes to the climate crisis is so boring: you don’t have to live in a swamp being a self-sufficient vegan with zero footprint to suggest that there’s some dissonance in wanting to fly for a less-hot holiday. We don’t all have to reach negative carbon. We do all have to fly less.

Varoty · 14/08/2022 10:06

midsomermurderess · 14/08/2022 07:54

You don’t have to be ‘super rich’ to go in holiday. Go and such your lemons elsewhere, @Varoty, piss on some one else’s chips, why don’t you. Or will you be huffily shuffling over to Style and Beauty next to screech on the ‘last thing you bought’ thread, ‘Camera bag from Monsoon for £50?????!!!!!. I could feed a family of 6 on that for a month. Look, people have different lives, different incomes, get over it.

Maybe not this year. But next year you will have to be. The average energy bill is going up by £3k. People who think they are going on holiday next year don’t know what a shit storm is coming.

pinkhousesarebest · 14/08/2022 10:10

Everywhere in Europe is suffering. We have had our first rainfall since May this morning( southern France). My dear is working in Holland - he says it is a pleasant 25 degrees. We went home to NI to escape the heat. Never been so grateful.

Being able to visit different parts of the world is good for the economy - ours and theirs- and good for educational / cultural reasons. Not everything in life has to be about climate change. We are all going to die eventually anyway. Might as well enjoy ourselves whilst we’re here.

We have UK holidays every year and they’re great. But there’s nothing as exciting to our family as flying to somewhere completely new, a completely different country and experiencing new things.

I won’t be flying less and neither will the vast majority of those who can afford to take a foreign holiday.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 14/08/2022 10:14

West coast of Portugal, gets breezes from the Atlantic and is generally cooler.

pinkhousesarebest · 14/08/2022 10:16

Not everything in life has to be about climate change. It’s not an add on. It’s the most frightening thing coming our way. If you lived where I lived, you’d see our future very starkly.

stuntbubbles · 14/08/2022 10:23

Not everything in life has to be about climate change.
It literally does, though. Because it’s inescapable. Even if you’re one of the super-rich who can afford a trip to the moon or to buy a bunker in one of the least-affected countries, you can’t escape it. It’s not unreasonable to mention it on a thread about too-hot destinations that maaaybe flying to those destinations is going to continue to make them hotter still.

Afterfire · 14/08/2022 10:29

The biggest mistake people who are concerned about climate change make about those they perceive that aren’t is that they’re ignorant or don’t understand etc. It’s very tedious.

Stringervest · 14/08/2022 10:31

For people saying go to the UK in August I agree you'd have hit the jackpot. However, we have been to Wales in the second week of August every year for the past five years and only one of them (2020) was warm enough for a proper beach holiday experience. Last year the temp rarely topped 14 degrees. Lots of wind and rain and we were in coats every day. We are going to Spain this year but will try Northern Europe next.

I’m interested to hear what you are seeing where you are.

im very concerned about the environment but until this year, I would console myself with ‘there have been heatwaves /extreme weather before in the past and then everything settled down again’
but this year I just know that this is only heading one way and I can’t deny it anymore.
I knew the climate was changing but it’s the speed of the change of that makes sense.

Sorry I know that is not what this thread is about but the extreme heat this year has really hit me.

I will be looking at ‘holidays very differently from now on and I think a lot of other people will too.

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2022 10:49

I suggest you go to China, India snd the USA and talk to them. What you do personally is a drop in the ocean! It’s so sad that because you have had a lifetime of travel that you deny others a modest holiday. Please stay here if that’s what you want but people flying once a year are not the worst offenders. It’s a tiny part of the jigsaw puzzle. I assume you don’t have a car, don’t eat meat, don’t buy foreign made clothes or imported food and don’t use gas or oil and live off grid! Well done you if this is you but I bet it’s not.

I know I'm going on holiday next year. How does that make me ignorant to the further price increases that are coming? Confused

N0tfinished · 14/08/2022 11:12

We were on the Algarve in Portugal in July & my son is there now so I've been paying attention to the temps. It's averaged 28/29. I think the highest while we were there was 31. Atlantic cools things down a bit I'd imagine?
