It's a bit too hot in Spain....where to go in 2023??

So, currently on day 8 of a 10 day all inclusive in Spain. It's hot. So hot the kids don't want to leave the complex which I get. It's also making my eldest a bit grumpy. She's happy in the pool but in all honestly I'm getting cabin fever and I think they are getting a bit bored.
Next year we were thinking of going to the vendee area for 14 nights. We did it in 2019 and we had the most amazing hol. Temp was around 28 degrees & we had the car so we could travel to beaches etc. However, I notice that Vendee is a similar temp to Spain (37degrees) this year so it could possibly cause similar problems

So, my query is this.....where should we consider for next august that will be a little cooler to allow us to explore & will be sunny but not baking hot. Happy to fly or drive. Maybe northern France but I have bad childhood memories of holidays in the rain in Brittany! Austria? Any amazing gems appreciated.

@Jewel1968 I agree the U.K. is stunning. We already have a trip booked to the new forest for next year. We've had some fabulous holidays around nothumberland/whitby/Scotland in the past couple of years.

@rookiemere when we've been to Tenerife it's been about 28/30 which has been more than warm enough.

That walk looks like it will be great.

Yes I guess we will need to adapt and consider our options. We've not been abroad for 3 years due to covid & the kids are 3 years older of course so I we will need to think about what suits them a bit more.

I’d recommended Brittany, we loved it this year. Northern France is easy by ferry too, no (or at least less) climate guilt

mac1974 · 13/08/2022 20:01

@MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler I think we might consider that area to be honest. It's easier to get to as well
Thank you. Lots to consider on here.

One of the best holidays I have been on was in Austria. We stayed around several lakes (can recommend some great locations). It is breathtakingly beautiful with fantastic food and accommodations. It's not extremely hot either.

But if you're after a sea beach holiday, Tnetife is always windy and it was never properly hot when we went in 2019. There is even a current thread about the weather in Tenerife on here.

XelaM · 13/08/2022 21:36

Tenerife*

mac1974 · 13/08/2022 14:38

@WinterMusings yes potentially but is this a sign of things to come? I guess it's difficult to predict based on one year isn't it.

@mac1974 I was watching something the other day, that said we won't get another summer like this for 3 years. I'd link if I could remember where, but it was a 'well they should know'

it explained it well, but it was too involved for me to remember the explanation.

if I remember anything useful about where to find the program, I'll come back & update.

Yes do keep flying. That will really help with the extreme heat. Honestly the cognitive dissonance is baffling.

I was thinking the same thing.

midsomermurderess · 14/08/2022 05:55

The Finnish Lake District. Hire a cabin, bikes, swim in lakes, paddle board. It’ll be marvellous. A few years ago I was in France during a hellish heat wave. Scandinavia was my next holiday.

stuntbubbles · 14/08/2022 06:02

Friend is on holiday atm, has just been in Sweden and now Denmark, it’s been hot but not brutal and plenty of cool overnights. Her pics look idyllic – and it’s all been by train not plane, she got the Eurostar over with DC and they’ve done some overnight cross-country trains. You can stop flying and not be restricted to the UK.

HeartofTeFiti · 14/08/2022 06:09

Take a ferry to the channel islands or Ireland.

Ylvamoon · 14/08/2022 06:09

I think if you want to avoid "extreme" heat, you'll have to go up = mountains Alps Dolomites to name the most well knownones! Or you go north = Finland, Sweden Norway...

KnottyKnitting · 14/08/2022 06:43

The western Algarve is usually a bit cooler than Spain. Breezy too and cool at night.

Icannever · 14/08/2022 07:07

@LadyEloise1 i think Madeira has that sort of year round climate, slightly cooler in winter but never too hot or cold

maddiemookins16mum · 14/08/2022 07:10

The Atlantic coast is always fresher (so Portugal maybe?).
I was a holiday rep (yonks ago), the difference between the summers I worked in Greece/Cyprus and the summers I worked Algarve and Madeira were very noticiable.

notimagain · 14/08/2022 07:32

You can't assume anything about where will or will not definitely be hot or cold next summer, weather simply isn't that predictable...with or without climate change thrown into the mix.

General principal to give best chance of avoiding extreme heat in Europe would be to be as others upthread as suggested - go north, and/or somewhere coastal ( and hope for an onshore flow of weather ) and/or an island, but not one in the Med.

BeethovenNinth · 14/08/2022 07:37

So the earth is fucked and we worry where to continue to fly to for a two week holiday??? Do you not think a little deeper than this OP?

I no longer fly. I feel deep shame as the state of the planet

Varoty · 14/08/2022 07:39

Are you super rich? We won’t be having a holiday, the money we would have spent travelling will have to go on the massive energy bill.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 14/08/2022 07:41

We always holiday at this time of year too, currently just along the road from you in Playa De Muro. The hottest place we've ever been was the algarve at this time of year so wouldn't recommend that. Canaries are usually a few degrees cooler than the mainland of Spain but often still early 30s at that time of year.

Try and get to the beach, it's so much cooler, especially in the afternoon when it seems a bit windier, we haven't spent any time by the pool as it's just too hot.

Newnormal99 · 14/08/2022 07:52

We went to Iceland in May. Expensive holiday but loads to do - my teen loved it.

midsomermurderess · 14/08/2022 07:54

You don’t have to be ‘super rich’ to go in holiday. Go and such your lemons elsewhere, @Varoty, piss on some one else’s chips, why don’t you. Or will you be huffily shuffling over to Style and Beauty next to screech on the ‘last thing you bought’ thread, ‘Camera bag from Monsoon for £50?????!!!!!. I could feed a family of 6 on that for a month. Look, people have different lives, different incomes, get over it.

Bore off.

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2022 08:08

@mac1974
We didn’t do beach holidays much with DC at all in the end. We found they enjoyed cities and other experiences. So near to home there’s Brittany and Normandy which are great but Ireland, Sweden and Iceland are brilliant. Try and explore Northern Europe. Save exploring further south for Easter. Then a whole new world opens up that is not too hot!’

I take it you grow your own food, don’t drive, don’t take public transport, never buy anything new and never use your heating / electric?

bellamountain · 14/08/2022 08:12

Crete is a breezy island if you stay on the North coast. I found it very bearable this summer when usually I'm sweating like crazy in other places. You do need a hotel or property right by beach though.
