Easyjet cancelled flight😢

Absolutely gutted. Due to fly to Lisbon this afternoon, probably minutes before getting on the plane, our flight was cancelled along with loads more due to I.T issues. We've planned this trip ages ago, so excited as first holiday with DSD abroad. We all had to go back to arrivals and collect our bags, just got home. No real assistance from Easyjet, no chance of changing flights by the looks. Absolutely devastated!

I went from Dalaman to Glasgow Saturday night with Easyjet. Flight was delayed about an hour.

One poor girl was told she couldn't fly as the plane was full. Even though it was a prebooked return flight they wouldn't let her on yet there were at least 6 on board from a cancelled Belfast flight.
So it seems that girl got kicked off to make room for others.

Shame on you Easyjet.

I flew back from Crete yesterday with RyanAir and they did similar to a family! A dad, mum, nan and 3 small kids. They were all booked in and they said 'oh we're overbooked by two seats, two of you will have to wait for the next flight'. The dad was so calm until it became obvious the airline didn't appear to be doing much to resolve the issue (we were all at the gate at this point). The reason they had no seats for them though soon became obvious by listening to some people near me who were talking and it was because they had put on extra people from previously cancelled flights and so had basically given away their seats. I cannot understand why they did it to a family though. Selfishly I'm glad I wasn't one of the ones 'dumped' (certainly would have been easier for RyanAir as I was travelling alone).

I'm currently monitoring Easyjet flights to Lisbon from Bristol which have been the subject of several cancellations over the last 10 days. The next three days flights are showing as sold out in both directions, midweek non half term. I'm expecting them to be cancelled. The only other possibility is they have sold out due to people being transferred to these flights after their original flights were cancelled thereby filling them up. We shall see.
We are travelling next week, not hopeful.

Leftbutcameback · 06/06/2022 10:27

I’m glad I read this thread. I have quite expensive travel insurance so I hope it covers the situation if our flight is cancelled. We are flying with easyJet because no one else flys to our destination, and there are only a couple of fights a week, so if the flight doesn’t go then we won’t make our holiday (separately booked accommodation)

Agree it's harsh to try and split a family like that...

Back in the day that would have been fixed by asking for volunteers to be offloaded with an associated offer of compensation and accommodation...

You'd usually get enough takers from solo travellers, couples travelling without kids and/or those with urgent commitments at the destination...

MiniCooperLover · 06/06/2022 10:49

They did ask for volunteers but didn't get any. They did say they'd be put 'on the next flight with compensation' .. I had already spoken to a lady who had been kicked off her flight to Manchester the day before who was now on our flight to Stansted. They'd said they'd pay for her train ticket to Manchester but what a journey she still had to get home .. I guess no-one will filled with confidence they'd be getting home anytime soon.

Ah OK, if people had already been disrupted and/or had no confidence in getting home anytime soon I can understand the reluctance.

Do Easyjet refund you for the cancelled flights?

Leftbutcameback · 06/06/2022 11:58

I've just contacted my insurer (thanks to this thread) and got confirmation they would cover our hotel cancellation if the flight is cancelled. Makes me feel a bit better about the holiday!

Hellsbe · 06/06/2022 12:34

Why on earth would people travelling without children offer their seat to someone else just because they’re travelling with children??

I wouldn’t even if I was offered compensation!
Most people will have to be back for work or for other commitments.

Most holidays we would be picking up our car in the local airport at an appointed time, and have to pay by the hour for any time over that!

Yes we had ours refunded within three days. Waiting for compensation now!

Because it’s a darn sight easier for one adult to get sorted in alternative accommodation and one seat on an alternative flight

than it is for families with babies / children

If that's in response to my comment, I was not saying people without children should be expected to give up their seats for those travelling with children.

I was just pointing out that on the few situations similar to those described upthread that I saw when working with a scheduled airline the first option usually taken by ground staff was to make a general announcement for volunteers. It wasn't clear to me that the Ryanair staff had done that but we now know they did.

So sorry you were caught up in this… hope you get the compensation soon.

I’m flying from Gatwick to Malta with EasyJet on the 20th of June and I just can’t look forward to it as I’m so worried the flight will be cancelled! It’s my birthday, honeymoon, and wedding anniversary as well during the holiday so I will be devastated if it’s cancelled.

AnnaKar · 06/06/2022 13:19

My DD has had the same. She, with her friends had booked a villa in Greece - 28 of them. Five of the party flew from Gatwick and have arrived. She and another 15 flying from Manchester late Saturday had their flight cancelled at the airport, the rest were travelling Sunday and also are still here too, flight cancelled. ā˜¹ļø
There are no other flights.

Yes we've had the flights refunded and an email to confirm the compensation has been issued and on its way. Hopefully this will mean we are not out of pocket too much.

That's rubbish, sorry to hear that, really disappointing for your dd and her friends.

I’m someone who, in normal times and if I have some time to spare, am happy to be bumped off the flight. It comes with extra cash and sometimes even an upgrade.

In the current situation? No way do I volunteer to wait for the ā€˜next flight’. That could be tomorrow, or they might keep cancelling them and I’m stranded for another week.

I might not have children, but I do have a job I need to get to.

I know what you mean EileenGC, at one time if gate staff/check in staff asked for volunteers to offload from a flight, stay an extra night or two somewhere attractive, at the airline expense, with spending money, they'd almost be killed in the rush of takers.

These days with tighter budgets and especially the current uncertainty with schedules I think people will be much less likely to volunteer.

Hellsbe · 06/06/2022 15:34

@famagusta How would you know that? Last two holidays I had to be back in work the next day, and a hospital appointment the day after that!
you’ve got no idea what commitments people have. On what planet does a stranger and their children take precedence over my life! What a completely entitled and arrogant attitude!

Hellsbe · 06/06/2022 15:36

@AnnaKar Ah sorry to hear that! That’s awful for your dd and her mates.
I hope they are able to to re arrange something!

Threetulips · 06/06/2022 15:44

expensive travel insurance so I hope it covers the situation if our flight is cancelled

Of booking direct you need to ensure you have airline failure as part of your insurance.

70kid · 06/06/2022 16:42

@Sortingfinances2
stay sure insurance if you book the comprehensive cover it will cover you up to 5k for accommodation

if your flight is cancelled or delayed more than 12 hrs
after 12 hrs delay you can cancel and claim

this is pretty standard with most insurances if you get a mid level cover

I wasn’t talking about commitments

i was taking immediate logistics

you would disagree that easier to put one adult up in a hotel and get them one seat on alternative flight than for a family with children?

YetAnotherNam · 06/06/2022 17:13

@70kid , I just posted this in another thread.

I had Comprehensive insurance with Staysure and my flight was cancelled last week and they told me they didn’t cover accommodation or anything else.

they would if they flight was cancelled for reasons beyond the airline’s control (eg natural disasters)
