Easyjet cancelled flight😢

Absolutely gutted. Due to fly to Lisbon this afternoon, probably minutes before getting on the plane, our flight was cancelled along with loads more due to I.T issues. We've planned this trip ages ago, so excited as first holiday with DSD abroad. We all had to go back to arrivals and collect our bags, just got home. No real assistance from Easyjet, no chance of changing flights by the looks. Absolutely devastated!

@Robostripes .
thanks!

I’ll keep calling them and see if I can get through eventually.

Unfortunately I think budget airlines are just too unreliable to book at the minute. People are having such bad experiences it's putting them off completely.

LIZS · 30/05/2022 08:27

Technically the cancelling airline has to find and fund alternative flights - different flight, airline, airport even. However it is easier logistically for them to offer refunds especially knowing other airlines are in same situation, it is a busy period and with large numbers. It is a staffing issue, training/retraining , flying hours limits ( including knock on effect of earlier delays and displaced crew and planes), air traffic control and IT issues. The EJ issues are not sudden, had similar delays on domestic route a few weeks back due to Air Traffic Control with other flights being delayed or cancelled.

This all sounds horrific. I'm flying with Easyjet at the end of June. I am trying to work out what is the best insurance to get - mainly to cover the cost of the villa rather than the flights (ideally both). Does anyone know what will cover the cost of accommodation? Thanks

YetAnotherNam · 30/05/2022 12:41

@kirinm , I’m curious to see what responses you get.

I called my travel insurance company this morning and they told me they don’t cover this type of cancellation (eg airlines cancelling flights for lack of personnel or internal company issues).

Iluvfriends · 30/05/2022 13:04

I went from Dalaman to Glasgow Saturday night with Easyjet. Flight was delayed about an hour.

One poor girl was told she couldn't fly as the plane was full. Even though it was a prebooked return flight they wouldn't let her on yet there were at least 6 on board from a cancelled Belfast flight.
So it seems that girl got kicked off to make room for others.

Shame on you Easyjet.

kirinm · 30/05/2022 13:08

@YetAnotherNam yes I've been looking at a few policies and they seem to cover airlines going bust but nothing like the current situation.

Intrigueddotcom · 30/05/2022 19:06

I’m away at the moment
due to fly back east jet to Gatwick on Thursday

flights being impacted to Gatwick aswell?

Echobelly · 30/05/2022 20:50

We're in our Brighton airbnb now - not what we planned but glad to get away from home!

Wizz have credited me with the cost of the flight back that I requested refund for seeing as we couldn't use it, but refund of cancelled outward flight from Saturday has not yet appeared and that is supposed to happen automatically. I was relieved to confirm that the return one was the one received refund for at least as I didn't want past the departure date (Friday night coming) without being sure I'd got that one, or else I presumably I wouldn't be able to claim.

Will have to keep chasing the outbound refund with them, I suppose...šŸ™„

YetAnotherNam · 30/05/2022 20:54

@Echobelly , are you going to claim the compensation too?

they cancelled me this morning but I booked through a holiday company so they won’t let me request the refund myself.

Echobelly · 30/05/2022 21:02

Yes, have requested compensation via Money Saving Expert's free tool. Very easy to do. I wouldn't have bothered for just a delay but having to abandon a whole holiday merits it. Tbh reading the stories we are lucky this happened when we were just going somewhere we've been to often - some people have missed out on my much important/exceptional trips.

YetAnotherNam · 30/05/2022 21:57

@Echobelly ,
I’ll definitely check out that website. Thanks!

Further update: dh managed to get through to Easyjet on the phone whilst still here in France, refunds now issued for the flights. Partial refund issued for car hire in Lisbon after the company initially refused so that was unexpected. Just waiting now to hear on the accommodation side, but not sure if I'll get anything there as it may depend on if they were able to re-let the apartment so šŸ¤ž I assume any compensation will take a while longer...

@hellswelshy
DD just boarding Easyjet at Gatwick bound for France! Hope she’s trouble free!

Hellsbe · 02/06/2022 16:13

My dd and her boyfriend flew from Birmingham this morning. All went fairly smoothly.

hellswelshy · 02/06/2022 16:39

Good to hear some people are getting away without issues 😊

Our flight back to luton was also without any issues - I think they seem to have escaped the chaos from the news.

Echobelly · 04/06/2022 19:36

Nah, we got cancelled at Luton, although the airport itself was actually very quiet calm - there didn't seem to be any other cancelled flights (and we were there for 4 hours) so we were rather unlucky it seems, but there was quite a lot of overbooking going on and people being bumped off flights they'd booked.

I was pleased to read part of an interview with the CEO of Jet2, who we are flying with in summer to Croatia - apparently he saw all this coming and they started to re-hire people last September in expectation of demand, whereas the others have waited and now can't get enough people. They also have their own baggage handlers and ground staff so I feel reassured our summer flights should be OK now.

Hellsbe · 05/06/2022 14:38

@Echobelly Ah what a shame you didn’t get away. Are you going to try and re book?
interesting what you say about jet 2.
i hope your summer holiday with them goes smoothly.

Sponge19 · 05/06/2022 14:42

What will happen to the cost of your accommodation? That’s so disappointing

Why not do all this when you back and just reply focus and enjoy holiday

hellswelshy · 05/06/2022 15:27

famagusta It was just the one call we made whilst away about the flight refund as we wanted to ensure we notified Easyjet about the return flight beforehand just in case they counted us as a no show - didn't want to give them any reason not to refund us! We had a lovely time in France though, don't worry, that one phone call didn't spoil anything, in fact we felt relieved it was sorted.

OP posts:
Echobelly · 05/06/2022 16:57

@Hellsbe - we got to Brighton for 4 days, which was lovely. I have seen assuming I'll claim the refund back in cash but we'll probably try to go to Slovakia at Christmas now, in which case I may be better sticking with the flight credit, as I get an extra 20% on top of what we paid.

Sortingfinances2 · 06/06/2022 08:35

@kirinm have you managed to find a policy that will cover you for separately booked accommodation if flights are cancelled?
I've spent ages searching and am getting nowhere.
I have Ryanair flights and separate hotels. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

From another thread someone uses Allianz. I've got to read their policy though.
