where would be a good place to book a hotel?
I am finding it difficult to work out where would be an attractive place for the parents to be on a city break. It is impossible to work out from a map.
TIA

I was in Naples a few years ago, we stayed in an apartment in this building:
www.ownersdirect.co.uk/italy/IT782.htm
(but not one of these apartments, an Italian friend booked it and I've no idea how!) - I can remember it was that building as Rossini used to live there, and from the views of the glass domes.

Anyway, it's very central and within easy walking distance of everything (AFAI remember!), so I guess a hotel around there would be good?

Naples is probably the craziest place I have ever been, hope your parents enjoy it!

D'oh, here's the linkified link

Do you really want Naples? As Trolley says is full of rubbish at the moment and is a bit of a love it/hate it place at the best of times. How about round the coast a bit - Amalfi or Sorrento is only an hour or so by train from Naples (bit tacky but very handy for all the places you might want to go - Capri, Pompei, Amalfi etc - and not so bad if you stay up in the hills)

I too would go out of the city to Sorrento or similar, MUCH nicer and not far from Naples

EmMcK · 16/01/2008 21:18

We stayed in Sorrento which is nice and you can get a wee clickity-clack train to Pompeii and a boat to Capri. You could visit Naples easily from there....

EmMcK · 16/01/2008 21:18

Great minds MrsJC....

Showmeheaven · 17/01/2008 16:41

Yes, I agree, avoid Naples - for all of the above reasons. My parents went there, but they were with a tour (taken around on a bus). They enjoyed seeing the bay etc., but they were advised to stay in their hotel and not venture out on their own.

They loved Sorrento, and as its the same bay they won't be missing out by avoiding Naples. They also they visited Pompeii and Capri from Sorrento.

mymama · 18/01/2008 00:58

I have friends who went to Naples last year. Saw someone shot in the street on their first day there. They left asap.

slim22 · 18/01/2008 01:19

the city is currently a giant dumpster - not to mention real and present danger of mugging.

the whole amalfi coast much better and why not capri or Ischia?

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 18/01/2008 17:20

Many years ago I spent one day in Naples after being in the deep South of Italy for the whole summer. Was supposed to be a week in Naples, but was so terrified I got the night train out to Bologna.
I would vote for the Amalfi Coast...

Lilymaid · 18/01/2008 17:23

Just to fill you full of confidence!

PippiCalzelunghe · 18/01/2008 17:41

Trolleydolly71 although I agree with not being the best of places to go now because of situation with rubbish etc I think your description of naples is at his best very very narrowminded.
yes some parts are dangerous, yes it's crazy (that's part of it's beauty), people might not speak english a lot but they are friendly and they try, and the city is beautiful.

I am italian too, not from naples or anywhere near there but I am angered by your description. I won;t be surprised if you are from the north.

PippiCalzelunghe · 18/01/2008 17:43

to answer to Cremolafoam if your parents still want to go let me know I've got a friend from there who could advise me.

CatIsSleepy · 18/01/2008 17:51

well I went to naples and really liked it!
thought the city was great, went on trips to capri, vesuvius, and ercolano. Had a great time.
mind you, can't remember where i stayed...(sorry!)
mind you went with a friend who grew up in italy so perhaps that helped in terms of not getting ripped off

Positano looks nice!

kindersurprise · 18/01/2008 23:21

We drove through the outskirts of Naples, and were not impressed. Don't know what the city centre is like though.

If they fancy Amalfi coast, we stayed in a lovely hotel in Amalfi. I prefered it to Positano. Will look for the hotel...

hotcrossbunny · 18/01/2008 23:21

I loved Naples! We went to Sorrento for 2 weeks, and spent 6 of those days exploring Naples. It is a wonderful, vibrant, exciting place with some of the friendliest people I've ever met. The drivers have a deathwish, and you cross roads with your heart in your mouth, but it is one of the best places I have ever been. I am so sad to hear of their troubles and hope there is some sort of solution to be found. I would love to go back, but not with the present situation.

kindersurprise · 18/01/2008 23:30

Hotel Antica Repubblica

We stayed in the Junior Suite, Il Conte. The room was gorgeous, with a four poster bed. It was overlooking the street though, so if your parents are noise sensitive then they should go for one of the others.

Breakfast is served on the beautiful roomtop terrace in the good weather, otherwise in small bar/dining room.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Cremolafoam · 19/01/2008 12:03

hi there,
so have told parents about the situation and we have cancelled the hotel in Naples.
They had already booked 4 days in Rome and the train tickets to Naples, so there is nothing we can do about that. The train tickets have arrived in the post and can't really be cancelled as they booked them through some agency or other_ and i am not getting into that-.
I have made various suggestions to them.
such as.
a) getting a hydrofoil/or clicky clacky train to sorrento and using that as a base.it looks as though you can get to pompeii from there ok on the train/bus
i have showed then the lovely views of the coast and they are quite keen
or
b)Going on to salerno

anyway they are deciding right now and i just wanted tothank everyone for helping me out and for the info on naples.I think thatns to you aa very big mistake has been avoided.

Btw, there were loads of local buses going up and down the coast roads. I imagine they would find it easy to get to Sorrento/Positano/Amalfi.

PippiCalzelunghe · 19/01/2008 21:50

trolleydolley it's not because I am italian that I say napoli is beautiful I say because I think it is and it is unique, not better or worse... it's different. Napoli is a beautiful city too, of course with the added bad notes but that'd be like saying 'do not go to marocco because it's more dangerous than belgium!
anyway I am not trying to change your mind as I can tell you are quite set to your ideas. yes let's all go to florence and venice...
