Spain - but not 'brits abroad' destinations please

Hello,
Never been to Spain but am looking to go this summer for a family holiday. Ideally a family beach location.
I have been put off the destination because of the embarrassing 'brits abroad / brits behaving badly' articles where Spain seems to attract a lot of those who don't know when enough is enough.

Any advice of lovely family locations in Spain near a clean, nice beach and a friendly relaxed town?

Thx

Xilxes is relaxed and very much full of locals

Other places I like are Canet d'en Berenguer and Peñiscola

Nerja

Almeria is where the Spanish go on holiday. It's got lovely beaches and most hotels are family friendly. Entertainment tends to be in Spanish and follow more Spanish hours though.

We like Estepona and Nerja on the mainland and Cala D'or in Majorca.

Tossa de mar. It's beautiful not at all brits abroad.

Not Spain itself but I went to the North of Tenerife and I was really taken aback that not a single person in the hotel as guests were English!

It was very odd as I'm use to hearing lots of familiar English voices but nope, all German, Spanish, Portuguese etc

No other English that I heard the entire time and I was a bit baffled

We went to a beautiful old town called Iznaha (not sure if spelling correct).inland but there's a large beautiful lake that is used like a beach.

Northern Spain, the Basque Country; Asturias; Cantabria, couldn’t be further removed from drunk Brits abroad. Beaches, marvellous hikes in the Picos. Not hot, think more Cornwall or Brittany.

Pals region, callella, begur, tamariu. Fly into barcelona and drive down

Spain at its best, relaxed, Spanish, stunning beaches, exceptional food.

Cadiz in the south or Donostia / San Sebastián in the north. Both wonderful places with fantastic beaches, amazing foodie cultures and both as far from the ‘Brits abroad’ brigade as it is possible to get on the Spanish coast.

I wonder if other nations take holidays based on there being no one else from their own nation there? 🤔

I worked on this part of the coast and it is stunning!

And I do wonder why so many of them come to the UK? Fourth most popular destination for tourists in Europe apparently. Big numbers considering we're supposedly such a horrible people with such a nasty culture...

colouringfoxes · 08/05/2022 18:13

Donastia/ San Sebastian is lovely! (it's one place, Donastia is the Basque name). More French tourists than anything. Beautiful beaches, great food, get the train up from Barcelona. Old town is pretty too and there's a museum of Basque history/ culture if that's your thing.

I've been to Tarifa three times, absolutely lovely

Nerja is amazing too
