Spain - but not 'brits abroad' destinations please

Hello,
Never been to Spain but am looking to go this summer for a family holiday. Ideally a family beach location.
I have been put off the destination because of the embarrassing 'brits abroad / brits behaving badly' articles where Spain seems to attract a lot of those who don't know when enough is enough.

Any advice of lovely family locations in Spain near a clean, nice beach and a friendly relaxed town?

Thx

If you don’t want mainland, then Formentera is the antithesis of Brits abroad.

midsomermurderess · 08/05/2022 19:08

It's not all Brits that the OP wants to avoid though, is it?

sassafras123 · 08/05/2022 19:11

Tarifa or Conil de la Frontera on the Costa de Luz , much quieter and beautiful.

cptartapp · 08/05/2022 19:12

Roquetas de Mar

Menorca. Nothing like Ibiza or Majorca at all. It's a small island, very quiet and very family oriented. Very little in the way of tower block all inclusive type places.

TheDogsMother · 08/05/2022 19:28

We've just come back from Conil de La Frontera and barely heard a British voice. Fabulous beaches, easy reach of White Villages, Cadiz and Jerez.

We loved Galicia - flew into Santiago de Compostela ( can also fly to Porto) and stayed near the River Minho. You would need a car I think but so many lovely towns, beaches and places of interest eg ancient Celtic civilisations. Santiago is also worth seeing and lots of music and culture everywhere.

Cadiz

No just the ones she deems rough and not as good as...

Utter snobbery.

We've liked the north coast,, between Bilbao and Santander. Noja is lovely. Some Brits but lots of Spanish holidaymakers too.

Platja d’Aro near Girona

this alto just along the coast about 10mins theres 2 towns called saint antoni and then palamos which are both beautiful and have lovely beaches

PandaOrLion · 08/05/2022 22:52

Tarragona in mainland Spain (fly to Barcelona Reus). We are here at the moment and would hugely recommend it. You need to use google translate for menus though or be pretty fluent yourself.

dollymuchymuchness · 08/05/2022 22:54

Oliva, Denia, Gandia, that part of the coast has a fabulous beach, not many hotels and not many Brits.

Cazziebo · 08/05/2022 23:36

Basque Country!

We had the most fabulous holiday in Hondarribia. Lovely bars and restaurants (think there were three Michelin starred restaurants to choose from). Beautiful beaches. Great cafe culture. Day trips to San Sebastien/Donostia and ferry over to Hendaye in France . Easy drive into France. Few days in Bilbao which is a beautiful city.

Don't think we've ever eaten as well as we did on that holiday!

It's shorthand for drunk and lairy. Most people know exactly what kind of behaviour is being referred to.
I've spotted you on patrol tonight, across other threads, taking it personally, getting huffy if people are less than sufficiently praiseworthy of the British, hackles up, waiting to pounce and police. Inserting yourself into harmless Sunday evening chats with your 😕. When people like you do this in real life, everyone does an eye roll and moves off. Perhaps you haven't noticed.

MarmiteCoriander · 09/05/2022 00:04

Are you looking for an all inclusive beach side resort, or happy to buy flight/accommodation separate?

I don't have children, but DH and I have enjoyed Malaga several times. I don't mean the many coast resorts down the coast, which can be brits abroad, but the 'city' itself. Last time we went it was 4 euro each and a 20min bus journey from airport to the city. There is a beach, a prommenade to walk along, museums, restaurants, a castle and lots to see and do. The tourists seems to range from about 3/4 Spanish or locals and the other 1/4 were Europeans. Not a 'city' in sky rise terms, just more a larger town that surrounding villages.

We did a day trip by train to Ronda which has an amazing, ancient bridge. Depending on the childrens ages, this might be a day out option too.

thanks all some great ideas here to help me research. I'm not looking for all inclusive, I'm looking for an airbnb, we love looking at historic sites and beautiful old towns too but equally want a chilled family beach to go to and enjoy.

I'll be back with questions I'm sure.

@midsomermurderess well said, eye roll for sure. In person I doubt @LondonWolf would be saying that wanting to ensure you spend your holiday in an area and surrounds that you will be sure you will like is snobbery.

Its common sense & good research you go where you think you'll like. I am 100% sure on our family holiday I'm not into boozing all day long and going crazy and I'm 100% sure if we ended up surrounded by this it would ruin our holiday.

I worked on this part of the coast and it is stunning!

My favourite place in the world for a long lazy holiday. I'd love to retire to Torroella de Montgri. All the little towns in that area are wonderful and have great street markets on different days.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/05/2022 19:00

Peniscola
Nerja
Tarifa
Callela de palafrugell
Cala san Vincente (Mallorca)
Puerto andraitx (Mallorca)

Alicante city, is great, English isn’t widely spoken, people are so friendly and helpful. Beach, Marina, great shopping & restaurants. Would recommend it, nothing like the costas at all.

Cadaques is gorgeous. North East coast of Mallorca if you want more of a beach holiday vibe.

Benjispruce4 · 09/05/2022 19:03
