Spain - but not 'brits abroad' destinations please

Hello,
Never been to Spain but am looking to go this summer for a family holiday. Ideally a family beach location.
I have been put off the destination because of the embarrassing 'brits abroad / brits behaving badly' articles where Spain seems to attract a lot of those who don't know when enough is enough.

Any advice of lovely family locations in Spain near a clean, nice beach and a friendly relaxed town?

Thx

We holiday regularly in la Carheula between Torremolinos and Benalmadena and hear lots of European accents but very few Brits! A mile up the coast it's a very different story!

Thanks @Stokey ! Fabulous top tips! we plan to then take a train from madrid to barcelona and across the french border which is why i thought a stop in Zaragoza might be good... but would you perhaps recommend somewhere else? Not barcelona (been several times!).

Zaragoza is wonderful. Do stop there. There is a wonderful tapa street full of character

Definitely Nerja

I am thoroughly confused by this post because loads of (probably most of) the recommendations are for places which are still holiday destinations favoured by Brits, just slightly less touristy (I’m hesitating to say more upmarket) than the usual costa resorts.

I may have misinterpreted the original post but I wouldn’t have thought places like Nerja, Moraira, Calpe, Denia etc would tick the box.

I would also suggest you go north OP - it’s like a totally different country, in a good way. You want destination tourism rather than mass tourism.

Beautiful beaches, lakes, mountains, greenery, gorgeous fishing villages and stunning scenery plus amazing food and drink. You absolutely won’t find any restaurants with photos of food outside but you will find lots of amazing restaurant featuring the typical ‘menu del día’ with three courses and wine for around €9.

Just don’t go expecting TGI Friday style food, happy hour etc and you’ll be fine. But then, I expect that’s not what you’re after anyway.

I’ll be there for a month this summer and we probably won’t come across any ‘brits abroad’ and that’s absolutely perfect for me.

ps the times article someone linked to above is really good - two of my own favourite fishing villages near our family home are listed there.

Agree with @RicitosdeOro. so many of these suggestions are just marginally classier Brits abroad destinations. Trip Advisor has a list of the Top 10 British bars in Nerja for example. Hardly the authentic Spanish experience - Northern Spain in general is your best bet to get that. If you are happy with Daily Mail readers rather than Sun readers then places like Nerja are much nicer than your Benidorms etc. .

Hi @RicitosdeOro thank you. Definitely not looking for an TGI fridays and am actively avoiding happy hour destinations!! @Marchmount I am looking for a relaxed Spanish holiday where we can soak up some culture, go to the beaches and wind down. I'm not looking for a mini Britain now matter what paper they ready. In fact, i'd probably say I am actively avoiding that too.
I'd love to hear a list of your fav spots.
