Spain - but not 'brits abroad' destinations please

Hello,
Never been to Spain but am looking to go this summer for a family holiday. Ideally a family beach location.
I have been put off the destination because of the embarrassing 'brits abroad / brits behaving badly' articles where Spain seems to attract a lot of those who don't know when enough is enough.

Any advice of lovely family locations in Spain near a clean, nice beach and a friendly relaxed town?

Thx

No just the ones she deems rough and not as good as...

Utter snobbery.

Having spent many years working and living on a Spanish canary island ...... the OP has a valid point!

Altea or Calpe.

Pugdogmom · 15/05/2022 14:01

When I go on holiday, I go to learn about other cultures and food etc. I don't want to go to places that cater for " Brits abroad ". I don't want to eat English breakfasts and roast dinners in Spain. I see what's snobbish about that!
Probably why I don't generally pick Spain, Canaries or Balearic Islands as a destination.

Sorry " can't " see

caprimoon · 15/05/2022 14:40

Sitges

nee22 · 15/05/2022 14:45

Another vote for Tarifa, Nerja and Cádiz. All three gorgeous and not too touristy. All three would need rental car but amazing areas to explore nearby

I lived in Madrid for a year and did holidays to Valencia which is a big city but nice beaches and easy to get around trams, we also did a holiday up to Galicia as someone else has mentioned - A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela etc.. lots of history, nice quiet beaches and amazing sea food if that's your thing. Just be aware it can be very windy along that northern coastline so not as hot as down south but definitely not Brits abroad style. I also agree - you know what style holiday you want! we are the same we like to do airbnb in lesser known areas so we can explore new places rather than being with lots of tourists but each to their own!

Another vote for Platja d'Aro and Pals area. Girona is a lovely city but you're also close enough to go to Barcelona.

Flubbertyjiblet · 15/05/2022 20:38

Alcossebre and Peniscola are lovely.

wonderw · 15/05/2022 20:51

Benidorm!

Alicante city, is great, English isn’t widely spoken, people are so friendly and helpful. Beach, Marina, great shopping & restaurants. Would recommend it, nothing like the costas at all.

Whilst I also enjoyed Alicante - I would disagree that English is not widely spoken .

I really like Nerja, Estepona and Sitjes - all mentioned by others . However these are all very popular tourist destinations and I have come across plenty of other British travellers in all of these resorts and Nerja has a couple of English bars.

I think you are probably just wanting to avoid destinations popular teens/ early 20s. I was going to say avoid destinations popular with hen and stag parties but that would include cities such as Barcelona !

What a stupid, ignorant post. Do you think that there is nowhere on mainland Spain/Balearics/ Canaries where the Spanish themselves eat?

cafedesreves · 15/05/2022 22:58

I loved Ronda!

This is silly. So many amazing, authentic places in Spain. To discount a country because of small pockets of all-inclusive hell is missing out on so much.

Javea/Xabia - beautiful North Costa Blanca. Not built up with only a few boutique hotels, has a stunning sandy beach along with award winning rocky beaches nearby . A fully working port which is full of great restaurants/bars and the old town up from the port is beautiful.

sansou · 15/05/2022 23:50

Holiday 1 - Based ourselves in Conil de la Frontera and visited Seville, Jerez, Cadiz, Gibralter and Vejer de la frontera.
Holiday 2 - Road trip to Cordoba, Ronda, Granada with highlight visit to Caminito del Rey with bases in Antequera & Granada.
Holiday 3 - Just in the process of booking a fortnight's DIY road trip across Northern Spain from Santiago to San Sebastian via stops on the coast & the Picos de Europa.

I've been in the Caribbean and there is Russians/Germans behaving badly....it's not just brits that cause trouble. Unfortunately some people just don't know how to behave.

TheBirdintheCave · 16/05/2022 12:13

We found that Sevilla was beautiful, not too touristy and it was easy to jump on a train or bus and go on a day trip (we did Cadiz and the Roman ruins at Italica). I'd definitely recommend it :) Good luck finding somewhere!

Agree with this last year (before the Ukraine invasion before I'm accused of russophobia) a large of majority of russian tourists in the Caribbean were awful , shouting at the staff being loud , lairy and incredibly rude. One of the children even BIT my DD and the parents did nothing. I wasn't planning on going back but now theres a travel ban I might.

We're off to Northern Spain this summer. I can't stand Brits abroad either. I would rather be surrounded by any other nationality.

Stokey · 16/05/2022 21:45

The Cadiz/Tarifa coast is beautiful beach wise but can be very windy. Northern Mallorca is lovely - Deia, Soller but not sandy beaches. Almeria and Cabo de Gato has great beaches but the landscape is a desert - the classic spaghetti westerns were filmed there. There are loads of lovely old towns, depends when you're going and what you want. The white village trail in Andalucia is lovely and easily combined with beaches - although for me the Costa del Sol doesn't have the best beaches. Northern of Barca for rocky coves, Costa Blanca for white sand, Basque country, Galicia and Asturias beautiful but unreliable weather. Everywhere is busy in August as its Spanish holiday season.

maddy68 · 19/05/2022 12:13

Somewhere like sitges is perfect. Beautiful beaches, classy , no drunken Brits. It attracts a different clientele.
Avoid anywhere in Spain where there are loads of all inclusive. But Spain is beautiful with so many gorgeous places to visit that don't attract sun readers

Alondra · 19/05/2022 12:20

I'm sorry guys but many of you are talking about Spanish beach spots full of British. I would never go to Sitges, Nerja, Benalmadena etc and I'm a Spaniard.

Op, apart from the link I gave you before, If you want to go to a beach without many British, think Huelva, Cadiz and Granada in Andalucia and in the north, Galicia and Santander. Santander specially is spectacular, great beaches, superb food and glorious side trips if you hire a car.

It's not any Brits she is avoiding , it's "that" type of Brit. Sitges is perfect. Been many many times. Culture, beautiful winding streets, vineyards , mountains at the back. Easy train journey to explore other areas (including Barcelona) but also further afield
