Can an 18 year old travel on child passport

Just occured to me that ds now 18 and ds 16 both just have child passports can they still travel on these
We are going to canary islands
Passports are valid until 2023

For the UK govt, you can travel on a ppt until its expiry, but check, as pp says, how much time is left on it and what the authorities in the other country require.

I read some countries ensure, for adult passports, they are valid for ten years from issue so won't accept extended ones. A lady got caught out recently. But I don't know about child passports, worth checking the specifics about the country.

Were the passports issued on the expiry date in 2018? You used to be able to get the remaining months from your old passport added to the new one, but those months are no longer valid. Child passports are now only valid for five years from issue (and you need validity for three/six months from your return date).

its Not the expiry date .l,,it’s when they were issued….this is what is catching people out….when they have had x amount of months added due to early application….but no longer valid due to brexit rules

They sound find to use as still in validity . The issue for accessing schengen countries is that a passport can’t be valid for more than 10 years (hence the problem with adult ones which had up to 9 months validity added on renewal) but child ones are only valid for 5 years so the extra would be ok. I doubt there are many children passports with extra added anyway as they stopped doing that a few years ago. You need 3 months after your return date for Spain.

You can use child passports until they expire as long as you have the required time left on the passport for the destination country (3 or 6 months). Extra months added to child passports aren't discounted as they are valid for less than 10 years anyway.

That's for the USA and they have different rules from those travelling within the EU. You need 3 months remaining for most European countries plus your passport can be valid for no more than 10 years from your issue date and extra months added are discounted

USA don’t require any additional months!

If anyone is in doubt it’s best to read www.gov.uk, choose the page for the country you’re travelling to and look at entry requirements.

I agree, if was you who mentioned USA. I gave advice for schengen countries as OP is travelling to the canaries.

Your comment about USA was incorrect and other people may have read it and been misinformed if USA is their destination hence my posts correcting the misinformation.

I did not say USA needed extra months so maybe you should read my post properly. I was responding to a poster that had put a screenshot of the rules for the USA and i was saying that the rules for the EU differed to those shown in the screenshot

@dementedpixie apologies, when you quoted it didn’t include the screen shot the other poster had added so it read as though you were saying that 6 months was needed for USA on your post at 9:35. However it’s always useful to clarify something unclear in case it helps others.

This is what logic would dictate, but I was on the government website last year and having put in my dd's data it said her passport was no longer valid - we had applied for it nine months early, as was allowed at the time. The same website also said she needed six months' validity for Europe (We lost fifteen months on that passport!). I now know this not to be the case. In summary the rules still aren't clear (and don't say look at the government website - that's where I got my original misinformation!!!).

I'm sure I read they took down the calculator as it was giving the wrong info about child passports.

It's all a big shit show tbh
