Vegas and ?????

captainpillows · 11/09/2021 20:34

DH and I are going to an event in Vegas next august, thinking of staying there a week then having another week somewhere else, pretty much open to any suggestions, apart from New York, I only like it there during winter!
Anyone ever combined Vegas with another destination?
No kids, just us (40's)

San Francisco. Easy internal flight.

Palavah · 11/09/2021 20:37

Grand Canyon and another national park?

ThiagoSilvasToe · 11/09/2021 20:39

Depends what you want to do. California is close and always nice. There are lots of National Parks on the West Coast if you're looking for outdoor adventures.

Zion, Grand Canyon, Bryce and Antelope Canyon are in a loop around LV. LA is a 3-4 hour drive.

captainpillows · 11/09/2021 20:43

Thanks!
Will do Grand Canyon whilst in Vegas, and did think of San Francisco!
Don't fancy LA much, don't know why, just doesn't appeal

I've probably been to the GC 5 times but Antelope Canyon is my new favourite. Bryce is also spectacular. Zion is nice but missable. Tour inside the Hoover Dam was interesting.

Yosemite and Sequioa National Parks are both amazing!

carrierbags · 11/09/2021 20:48

Defo miss LA. San Francisco is a Sterling choice

LizzieMacQueen · 11/09/2021 20:49

San Diego would make a nice change.

SpeckleDust · 11/09/2021 20:51

We did 3 weeks driving from San Francisco - Yosemite National Park - Sequoia/Kings Valley - Death Valley - Vegas - Grand Canyon - Joshua Tree Nat Park - LA. My two favourite places were Yosemite and Sequoia, mainly for the amazing scenery.

Santa Fe
Albuquerque
Palm Springs/Joshua Tree

Chicago is a major hub so will be easy to get to and is on the way home. Lots of museums, architecture, that kind of thing.

Another vote for hawaii. We did new York, Boston, San Francisco then hawaii for our honeymoon.

manywildhorses · 11/09/2021 21:28

Maui, Yosemite and another park or Chicago would all have my vote depending on what you’re looking for!

yeahyeahyeahwhatever · 11/09/2021 22:27

San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara are gorgeous smaller towns if you want a change from big cities.

BritWifeInUSA · 12/09/2021 06:02

I’d also say Santa Barbara or maybe somewhere like Big Sur but I’m biased.

Guineapigbridge · 12/09/2021 06:08

How loaded and adventurous are you? I'd wholeheartedly recommend an amazing multi-day boat trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Phenomenal wilderness experience.
Grand anyone Dory Boat Trip

Guineapigbridge · 12/09/2021 06:08

There's plenty of day trip options from Las Vegas to Monument Valley too.

maxiflump1 · 12/09/2021 09:22

San Francisco for sure. Beautiful city with so much to do.

RolloTomassi · 12/09/2021 09:25

Personally I loved LA, loads to do and see!

Less fussed on SF, apart from Alacatraz which was fantastic.

Also recommend Yosemite, it's about an 8 hour drive from Vegas but very straightforward, I managed it in a day with a couple of stops!

mim321 · 12/09/2021 09:58

Another tip is to avoid the Grand Canyon helicopter rides from Vegas. They stop in the (western?) canyon which isn't the proper canyon. From memory, the ones where you fly to the GC on a plane and transfer to the helicopter are the better option.

If you do decide to go to SF, pre book your Alcatraz tickets. My husband was allocated (only) this task, forgot and we had to sit on a dirty pavement smelling of wee from 2am to get the walk up tickets. You couldn't even send one person to get the tickets for the family, it was one ticket per person. It has become a standing joke (and we had to spent the rest of the day in bed as we were all so tired).

We drove from SanFran to yosemite, through death valley and around the grand canyon, it was amazing!
