DH and I are going to an event in Vegas next august, thinking of staying there a week then having another week somewhere else, pretty much open to any suggestions, apart from New York, I only like it there during winter!
Anyone ever combined Vegas with another destination?
No kids, just us (40's)

I lived in Chicago for a year. While it's amazing in a Gotham City kind of way, I don't think there's as much to do as some of the other major cities. I'd go to LA, SF or NY ahead of Chicago.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a week in Vegas, but I see you plan to visit the GC while you're there, so fine that should keep you occupied. Red Rock Canyon is nice for a visit too and you can drive over the Hoover Dam on your way to/from GC, which is impressive.

Where else for a week? Well, what do you fancy doing? Do you want a week by the beach, relaxing, or do you want to 'do' stuff? San Francisco is lovely for a few days, but the weather can be cool and grey in the summer, so if you want hot sunshine it's a bit of a gamble. It's a lovely city though with lots to do for 3-4 days. I expect it to be busy next August though, if Brits and other Europeans are finally allowed to visit the US, so make sure you book your hotel and any attractions you want to visit in good time. You can fly back to the UK direct from SF, which is handy. You could drive there via Yosemite or Kings Canyon or Sequoia NP if you want to get some nature en route. Again, book accommodation early if you do that, because they're all likely to be really busy next August.

If you just want to relax and chill, I recommend San Diego, which also has direct flights back to London. It's a nice city with glorious beaches nearby and some nice areas like La Jolla and Coronado. There's not a huge amount to do there, maybe a couple of days' worth, but if relaxing is your main objective then it would work and the weather is reliably good.

As for Hawaii, you could go there, but it's a long way to go for a week and then you've got to get all the way home again, so I'd probably go to California.

3 days in Vegas was plenty for me. I'd also recommend the 8 day boat/camping trip down the Colorado River through the canyon.

Some great suggestions!
Much appreciated, I'll let you know where we decide!

Grand Canyon and San Francisco

Rent a car in Vegas and go to the Hoover dam & Hulapai falls on your way to the Grand Canyon. At GC stay at El Tovar in the National park - its right on the edge absolutely stunning & amazing restaurant too. If you have the time & inclination after Sequoia, Yosemite & big sur are great. You can fly out of San Fran too.

We did Boston after Vegas. Had a great time.

We did a massive road trip from very far North California to San Fran and on down highway 1 coastal highway to LA, stopping off at Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs etc
We didn't bother with Vegas as neither of us were that pushed about it.
It was an incredible trip.

I would go to San Francisco if I were you

We did a three week road trip. Flew into SF and drove to Napa for a couple of nights. Then on to Yosemite and through Death Valley to Vegas. Met the kids in Vegas for a few days and then all drove to the Grand Canyon and then down to Santa Monica for a few days, before driving up coast road (Pacific Highway?) staying over in various places, ending back in SF for a few days.

Lots of driving but didn't worry us, and it really was a fabulous trip.

There was a water shortage when we stayed at El Tovar, so in this brilliant restaurant, we ate off paper plates. Grin Then there were mice scurrying around the room all night, with the occasional trap going off. Certainly a night to remember!

Amazing location though.
