Anyone know Vauxhall, London at all?

HI
I will be travelling with two children to London on Friday (with my mum too).

I am thinking of parking at Richmond (because I have done this before - £6 all day, LOL), and then getting train to Vauxhall. The place I have got to get to is St Stephens terrace which I am told is a 10 minute walk from the station.

What I need to know is...is it safe to be walking around there?

Any other tips also greatly appreciated as I don't know London at all and am a little nervous!

Will it be dark? If so get a cab tbh

EmmaJW1976 · 24/10/2007 15:54

No, it will be about 10.30 am getting there and then about 1.30 pm returning.

Vauxhall isn't the nicest bit of London but if you are there in the day it will
be fine.

flowerybeanbag · 24/10/2007 16:00

I'd say you'll be fine then - I used to work there and would happily wander round during the day but would not be happy on my own when it's dark.

Where's St Stephen's Terrace? Streetmap has no matches - just wondering what direction you'll be going etc Do you have a postcode so I can plug it in?

EmmaJW1976 · 24/10/2007 16:02

Yes please, thanks for all your help!

It's SW8 1DL.

Think we are going tomorrow now actually...

I used to live there and will second that you will be fine during the day and even in the evening it is relatively ok because most of the clubs and pubs around there are gay and it tends to be pretty safe, if a bit colourful

foxinsocks · 24/10/2007 16:05

where are you parking in Richmond for £6 all day? The one by the station is a bit more than that for all day (just thinking it might have gone up since you were last there!).

ScaryScienceT · 24/10/2007 16:06

Looking at it on Google Earth, you would be walking down a busy road, and then turn into an area of Victorian terraces.

Carmenere · 24/10/2007 16:06

That looks pretty easy to get too, you will be fine.

ImBarryScott · 24/10/2007 16:07

Vauxhall is no better or worse than any other London area IMO. I'm quite happy to walk round there of an evening, but then I live in Peckham, so I'm nails .

Seriously though, DH polices that area and I've not heard of much nasty business recently.

artichokes · 24/10/2007 16:09

I used to live right near there. It is not that nice an area but there is no danger during the day. In fact I happily walked round at night and never had a problem but maybe I was just lucky. You will mainly be walking down the South Lambeth Road which is a main road and very safe.

When you come out of the station you find the South Lambeth Road (which will be the most difficult part as the station is in the middle of a large roudabout). Then walk down the South Lambeth Road for about 5/10mins and turn left on Aldebert Terrace. St Stephen's Lane is the first turning on your right off Aldebert.

ScaryScienceT · 24/10/2007 16:09

I think it is more. I parked there on a Sunday a few weeks ago, and it was £5. I think it may have been £12 during the week. I would expect it to be very full from early morning.

EmmaJW1976 · 24/10/2007 16:10

Thanks everyone, feel a lot better now. I'll walk. Think it's about 20 mins.

Fox in socks - it's a carpark I found by default! We had to walk through the carpark, down a little road, across a busy road (high street? - lots of nice cafes), and then into the train station!

just looked - nice easy route mainly on a big road, you'll be absolutely fine

EmmaJW1976 · 24/10/2007 16:14

Thanks flowery.

On the next note...hmm...maybe I will never find that carpark in Richmond again.

Where is good to park?

Old Deer carpark in Richmond me thinks?!

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 24/10/2007 16:20

I'm biased because I used to live there but one of these car parks in Wimbledon - Queen's Road is £9 for 8 hours and Wimbledon is SO easy to Vauxhall - just hop on one of about a million trains an hour to Waterloo, really quick.

But as I said, I am biased because I know Wimbledon!

foxinsocks · 24/10/2007 16:40

old deer car park is still there! It's just off the A316 (and is £8 for 6-24 hours, £6 for 4-6 hours)

EmmaJW1976 · 24/10/2007 16:42

Is that close to the train station? I thought I'd made that name up THB!

OP posts:
EmmaJW1976 · 24/10/2007 16:42

TBH even!

OP posts:
ScaryScienceT · 24/10/2007 16:43

5 minute walk?

foxinsocks · 24/10/2007 16:45

There's a closer one, literally right by the station (which is slightly more expensive) but Old Deer Park is close enough to walk.

Here's a map with them all on it. If you click on the left link, car parks, it will tell you how much each one costs.

map or richmond car parks

foxinsocks · 24/10/2007 16:46

old deer park and its extension are 16 and 17 on that map

EmmaJW1976 · 24/10/2007 16:49

brilliant, thank you
