Bedgebury is holding a Christmas 'Lapland UK' Experience

... covering a part of the forest with fake snow, Christmas village, Raymond Briggs 'The Snowman' ride, Father Christmas visit, mulled wine to fortify parents, reindeer, husky dogs, trumpeters and all sorts. I'm soooo excited. Er, for my children, obviously...

It's quite expensive though (I just paid £167 for a family of 5). Here is the link. And here is the itinery.

And it's selling out quite quickly.

I've put a couple of photo's on my profile - they're not terribly good photo's as all the best ones have my DCs & DH in them and I want to keep them private.

But this is what we thought (and the friends we went with)...

Very long walk from walled car park to entrance - we managed OK but toddlers & elderly would take at least 30 minutes. Later visitors got to park in the car park by visitor centre so much easier for them.

We missed our 10.00am flight because the 10.30 people were all queueing ahead of us and they don't call out 'flight times'. We just went with the 10.30 and were given their timetable. It was busier than usual because some of last Sundays' cancellations had been given tickets for yesterday (but we only noticed in the toy factory & gingerbread house).

The Snowman ride wasn't very good but the DCs had a lot of fun. We didn't get snow blown over us but we did all get chairs.
When we walked out into the Lapland square the snow was falling quite heavily and it looked fabulous. The elves were very helpful!

We immediately went into toy factory and made puzzles. Boring for adults but the children enjoyed it. We then had 15mins before gingerbread, which is long enough for a drink and a visit to husky dogs.

Gingerbread house was great. The gingerbread men they decorate are about 10" high and they can eat them straightaway or elves give you a bag. Mrs Christmas then tells them the Gingerbread Man story (without using a book). She is very good btw.

As we left the gingerbread house we were called for our FC appointment. We were 1 of 6 families, all given a number, then we proceeded to large tent with coffee machine, 6 large tables with colouring and several elves for entertainment. After 10 minutes we were called to see FC, who scores 11 out of 10. Absolutely perfect. Log cabin ditto.

We then went back to village which by this time was quite empty. No queue for lunch - we had 3 x hot dogs, 1 egg & bacon roll and 1 bacon roll which cost £16 - which is roughly what we pay in McDonalds so that was fine. We ate at a table in another large tent. Then we visited the reindeer who are gorgeous.

The post office was nice - only 2 other families there. We wrote a couple of postcards, DD1 stamped them and we posted them in wooden postbox in forest. (I paid less than £2 for 4 postcards, 2 of which we posted). Then we went for a story. Storyteller was in Lap dress, she did read from a large book but to be fair, the stories are quite long and unfamiliar. She read Nonny The Reindeer & then How The Bear Lost It's Tail. We were the only family in the tent.

We then had our hot drinks. The mulled wine & hot fruit punch are in half-size cups (not thimbles) and in fact the wine was so strong that DH had to drink it.

The dressed-up Rudolf is fun and plays with the DC, begs for their lunch etc. They loved him. We then left via the shop, the FC photo's are lovely (I keep having to look at them).

We heard one family moaning about there not being umbrellas or waterproofs for sale and several people wore very impractical clothing. It is in a forest, it has been raining for weeks and the paths are getting muddy. I think some people would be happier at the Earls Court thing. This is an outdoor event and you need to be prepared! I took extra socks for all the DCs, as wellies are never that warm. Despite the rain, we had a good day.

[and this is undoubtedly my longest ever post]!

Thanks for posting that - I feel slightly better about going now and the photos look fantastic!

Any other advice..bearing in mind I have a 5 yr old a 3 year old (and will have a less than a week old if it hurries up!)

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 09/12/2007 20:58

Tips for Lapland UK...

Allow at least 30 minutes to get from car to entrance. It is a long, hilly walk. If there is a long queue for the Snowman ride ask loudly if it's for your time slot!

Take a buggy & buggy board if you think your DCs will need it. There is enough space to leave buggies outside all the cabins.

Take cartons of drinks & small snack - a couple of biscuits maybe, just in case your DCs suddenly flag!

Take wipes for hands - mud/dogs/ketchup/gingerbread icing...

Dress warmly & waterproof and wear wellies. (Although weather forecast is improving)!

Take a waterproof bag to put the presents in - our book got a little bit damp but it's dried out OK!

Take lots of cash if you can't resist cute cuddly toys in the shop at the end (they're about £20).

The FC photo's cost £10 for 1, £18 for 2 or £25 for 3 (these are different photo's, not copies of the same one).

Remember it's cash & cheques only in the forest.

THE LOO'S ARE FABULOUS AND THERE IS A BABY-CHANGING SHELF IN THE LADIES - I didn't check out the gents . There is also a disabled loo.

Has anyone actually had their refund for last Sunday or Thursday when Lapland was cancelled?

Snaf · 10/12/2007 10:36

Right, we're off in a couple of hours - all tips duly memorised Wellies, umbrellas and spare socks at the ready.

Can't believe it's such a long walk from the car park though - guaranteed to put me in a foul mood from the start!

lilyloo · 10/12/2007 11:45

We went yesterday and agree through the eyes of your dc's it's great.
The walkis very lone so allow plenty of time to get to tent.As has been said this isn't very good and ds 5 said why does it say dvd in the corner of the screen wasn't sure how to explain that.
The forest is lovely and the elves were fab as were all the staff.
My dd 3 loved the Rudolph characterand dsloved the elves. They found the toy factory good fun and absolutely loved the gingerbread house.
Santa was by far the best santa we have ever seen and has ensured ds believes for sometime to come.He was in awe of the personal details he knew and told me he was definately the 'real santa'. We had about 15 minwait but had somelovelyhot chocolate drinks and the leves did lot's of singing toentertain everyone. The huskies are lovely and were another highlight for ds.
All in allwas a good day.
However weather was terrible so wellies and change of clothes essential,it is very very muddy!
Also take a bag to put your gifts in which i thought were really nice.
Agree food and gifts expensive but blind eye turned to you taking your own. The photo's of santa are really good and worth a tenner bueverything else in gift shop well over priced cuddly toys £20 +etc.

However we had bad experience at hotel night before in Hastings when car gor broken into and Sat nav pinched warning anyone travelling long distance don't forget to take all valuables with you out of car. Think we were so tired after journey we just put it in glove box.

Hope you all have fab time whoever still to go

Chigley1 · 10/12/2007 13:21

Sounds have though things may have improved, I'm glad those who have gone have enjoyed it.

Flustered - we haven't had our refund yet. Also a bit disappointed to read that some people who had been cancelled had been offered tickets at weekends, we weren't, which is why we had to take refund. I aooreciate not everyone can go on the same day, though!

Snaf · 10/12/2007 21:27

OK, we're back, ds absolutely loved it - 'I have had lots of fun, mummy, and I am so tired out now'.

Agree that the 'transporter' is pretty rubbish, and wasn't overly enamoured of the sulky teenager who checked us in, complaining about how cold he was and loudly proclaiming 'thank god I've only got half-an-hour to go' - not exactly 'magical', mate .

Apart from that - can't really fault the staff - the elves were lovely, friendly and entertaining. (And if you're interested, couldn't help noticing that some of the men wandering around in Lapp dress were, umm, quite fit )

Ds absolutely loved the gingerbread house and the toy factory. Bacon rolls and hot chocolate with marshmallows - v. good. No-one seemed bothered if you ate your own food, though. Slightly bemused by the discrepancy in facilities, with fab loos, but virtually nowhere decent to sit and eat - just damp benches and a chilly tent with a few bits of plastic furniture. Father Christmas was excellent - ds was speechless, which is a first.

It's bloody cold! Wrap up very warm, definitely wear wellies - the mud in some places was deep. Shame the rain appeared to have washed away quite a lot of the snow, but once the sun goes down it's quite lovely.

All in all, we enjoyed it. Don't let your expectations run away with you, just enter into the spirit and you'll have fun.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/12/2007 22:53

Chilly tent with plastic furniture? All the tents we went in either had heavy wooden picnic tables (a la pub) or wooden benches covered with fur throws. Has someone stolen the Lapland furniture?

Glad you enjoyed it though. Some school friends went yesterday and had a good time. But another friend went on Friday and said it was disappointing - but probably unsurprising as they spent last Christmas in the real Lapland.

Duchess - your experience mirrored ours - our dd is still star struck and I found an 8 year old yesterday who thinks he saw the real FC . Actually that's what it's all about, I reckon.

Marina · 15/12/2007 22:44

We went today and liked it a lot. Ds, who was in on the whole premise, actually seemed to love it even more than dd, who was slightly overawed in the end by our magical Father Christmas. I thought on the whole it worked well - loved the Lapp costumes, all the staff were really friendly, food and drink was delicious and clearly good quality, huskies were huggable, and they have found two music students to parp their way through Christmas carols in the main square. As dusk fell, the whole thing looked even prettier
We came away a bit chilly (despite being well-dressed) and had a bit of a wait for Father Christmas, but it was worth it.
Top marks to the charming staff in the Gingerbread House .

ShinyHappyStarOfBethlehem · 16/12/2007 18:13

Just got back.

I doubt a detailed review is necessary as we are probably among the last to go and you've read it all before but I will say that thanks to the reviews on there, good and bad, I was well prepared and therefore didn't build the kids' expectations up inappropriately (eg about the "flight") and I have come away feeling we had a good time

It was freeeeeezing but I think that just added to the magic. We all loved the huskies (Nicki and Zena, bless [fsmile
). Would would have liked to buy the younger ones a husky each from the shop, they were so enamoured by the real ones, but at £20 a throw.. nah! Father Christmas, was, as stated, great and we bought two photos (£18) even though I had only planned to get one. One with FC plus DS (7) and DD (9) and one of all of us including DS1 (15). Photographer was great and although this obviously so they sell as many photos as poss, I appreciate anyone who does what it takes to get a good pic of DS2! DS1 spent a lot of time pretending not to find any of it interesting or magical but got into the spirit of it over the animals and thereafter As an older sibling, he was allowed to take part in the toy factory part but he didn't (far too old I'll admit!) and also the gingerbread house. The gingerbread staff make a bit show of trying to get him to join in, but he laughed them off.. so I made his and he ate it!

We took our own food (no eyelids batted) but did indulge in a little of what was on offer as well and it was yummy, and again, we were prepared for the prices. I don't think anyone has mentioned that adults get one free mulled wine each has they? That was a nice touch. And it was fab. The hot chocolate was to die for!!! It wasn't just the cream/marsh mallows, but the chocolate itself tasted wonderful.

Father Christmas asked DD how Robyn was (best friend) and even though she is 9 (just!) her eyes were like saucers when he said that and she stuttered "She's fine! I saw her this morning!" and FC said "can you give her a message for me? Can you tell I wish her a very happy Christmas?" DD said she would and said to me afterwards "Robyn's never going to believe me!"

I think the toys (puzzles) they brought away are lovely - not seen them quite like that before and seem v.good quality. (A few of the little ones in the toy factory didn't understand why they didn't get to take those away and had the screaming abdabs!) And the book FC gave us is lovely - a real souvenier of the day with the Lapland UK label inside.

My only small criticism really, in light of my reduced expecations, would be that although the staff were, on the whole, lovely, some of the younger elves seemed a bit shy and ill at ease. Maybe they should have hired drama students or suchlike, who might really have embraced their roles a little better?

I am going to refer to the list further back on the thread now as I noticed a couple of mums smiling (kindly!) at me (as I struggled with DS2 (SN) as ones has to!) in the toy factory and I found myself wondering if they were Mumsnetters who recognised me via DS.. [frgin] (Probably not but you never know..)

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 16/12/2007 21:02

Glad you all had a good time. Am only 'marking' this to get it back on my threads list!

Hi, we're going tomorrow and I'm worried about how cold it is going to be, are there any places to get warm and keep warm?

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 16/12/2007 21:43

It's warm inside the toy factory & gingerbread house. There is a large tent between hot food & husky dogs that had heat lamps but they weren't brilliant. I can't remember how warm the shop & Post Office were - we had rain not frost!

Just dress as warmly as you can, extra socks are useful - and perhaps put a blanket in the car for DCs to warm up with afterwards.

OP posts:
Marina · 17/12/2007 09:26

Have to agree about the less than radiant heat in the tipis duchess
Definitely take extra socks and MAKE your dcs wear their hats and gloves (my two urban softies soon changed their minds)
Quite a few families brought their children in their skiwear, great idea if you have it
Dh was firmly convinced that the snow dusting made him feel colder
It's jolly warm in the loos too btw and they are seriously posh

Marina · 17/12/2007 09:29

and did anyone else meet a really nice young lad in Sami costume
He was so kind, chatting to the dcs and explaining about his reindeer skin boots and his four winds hat

ruty · 17/12/2007 11:31

glad they've found some singers Marina!
Father Christmas was in fairness lovely, though we had a very long wait to see him, seems like they've sorted out the delays now. And the photos were far too expensive, but of course you want to buy them.
In contrast, we just went to Europa Park in Germany whilst we were on holiday. 25 euros each for adults and ds free [under 4]. Now that was a brilliant day. Would recommend it to anyone. all rides free inside and great value for money - good food too. The park was lit up beautifully. Not tacky at all like UK theme parks. Ds still talking about it.

At last the invitation has arrived (we go on Friday 21st) I'm not at all sure how I even feel about going, if I could have got a refund I probably would have done.

At least my expectations are low.

I am so grateful for all the reviews on mumsnet, I am not expecting what I was sold on the website so hopefully I will be pleasantly suprised.

ShinyHappyStarOfBethlehem · 17/12/2007 12:49

Fio Fio.. calm down my love I had hoped you weren't offended!! I had never seem him before and think he's a very nice looking man (didn't want to mention that in front of DH.. not that he'd care!) but that I think you look quite alike!!

Maybe you have grown to look alike over the years?? It happens I'm told DH doesn't look like me yet (good then, poor bloke!) but he IS now allergic to cats (like me) and dust when he never used to be!!

Yes I bought two photos for the same reason Fio.. virtually NEVER get a picture of us all together..

I am about to email you (Fio.. not ALL of you) a few of the ones we took ourselves, (with new and baffling camera I'm afraid!) so brace yourself to be bored!
