Skyscanner-am I doing this wrong?

So I keep being told by various friends and family to book flights and accommodation separately. I’ve been looking on sky scanner though and by the time I’ve added luggage to my “£35” per person flight, it’s coming to £300 for 2 adults and a one year old.
I’m confused how people travel cheaply using Skyscanner. Am I doing it wrong?!

husband is adamant he wants hold luggage as he wants to take his razor etc (won’t use a disposable that could easily be bought out thereHmm)

You can take fixed-blade razors (ie. disposable) through security. Could your DH bear to do that for a week?

You will struggle with hand luggage only for a run holiday with a baby - the baby gets no luggage allowance so all their stuff needs to go in your bags. Nappies etc are often very expensive at resorts. I would plan for hand luggage and one 23kg hold case between you all. Also think about whether one of you would be better with no hand luggage so you can deal with the baby.

fergusthefrog · 09/08/2019 07:55

I agree it's annoying. I also hate that Skyscanner don't tell you the price from the airline if it's not the lowest, it's all the websites that I don't want to use!

It is just a search tool though, it has its limits.

Package holidays in your case will almost 100% be cheaper!

Zoowolla · 09/08/2019 07:56

Tui often have some great deals with the prices dropping suddenly.

PinkDaydreams · 09/08/2019 08:44

We’ve decided to wait till October and try book something last minute. First time in years that we can possibly take advantage of a last minute deal Smile

I think jet 2 hold luggage is cheaper than Ryan air. We are flying with Ryan air but only taking one hold luggage bag between 4 of us for a week! But we are very light packers! And usually don't take hold luggage at all. U could just get 1 hold luggage bag between you for sun creams, baby stuff and his razor and you will get a lot in that, and then other things in a couple of carry on bags.

PinkDaydreams · 10/08/2019 09:36

That’s a good idea taking just one hold bag, I hadn’t thought about that. Thank you!

Sorry to hijack but please can someone explain how on earth you manage to travel with only a cabin bag if you're going away for more than a couple of days? I'm lucky if I can squeeze in two changes of clothes and my toiletry bag is always minimal! Clearly, I'm missing a trick. ThanksSmile

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 10/08/2019 10:15

I always take s hold bag too! How do people do it!

PinkDaydreams · 10/08/2019 10:17

@WotNoLoobrush that’s exactly why I’ve got it in my head that we need to check in hold luggage. Even without a toddler I’ve never been able to do just hand luggage. I shared a hold suitcase many years ago with a friend for a week but that was a struggle.

PinkDaydreams
Having cabin bags only is about planning and thinking smart about what you actually need. I can have a 2 week break with out putting a bag in the hold!

GreenTulips · 10/08/2019 13:15

I can also pack light

Skirt/trousers/top for nights out
2 shorts and 3 T-shirt’s for days
I bikini
1 cover up
Knickers
Bra
Sorted

I find Skyscanner useless. I know the dates I want to go, we want to fly out early and get back late, so as to make the most of the weekend: so I type everywhere: but it then only gives destinations as a list and then when you do click on it, you find the price has shot up and it's not such a cheap deal at all!

I can't find a decent search engine!!

WotNoLoobrush · 10/08/2019 14:01

I still don't understand how you fit all you need into a cabin case if your trip is more than say a week. Are you washing stuff when you're away?

Honestly, I struggle to fit one change of clothes in, nightwear & a very modest toiletry bag in one of those cases for an overnight stay and my case is as large a cabin bag as you can get. I'm average clothe sizes btw.

Maybe this is one of those 'only on MN' things🤔

notacooldad · 10/08/2019 14:53

WotNoLoobrush
I put my underwear in a small compression bag, one that is slightly bigger than say a sandwich bag. Minimum toiletries. If I'm going with Dp or a friend we can split it between us.
If have learned over the years that I always need less than o think so have managed to work out what outfits work best. I always wear nike internationalist for the plane journey and sught seeing so only need a pair of shoes for going out and maybe flip flops. With practice it can be done.

lovelyupnorth · 10/08/2019 15:36

Have to say don’t see why you need hold luggage have done multiple two week trips short and long haul without hold baggage even then the DDs managed to pack lots of outfits they didn’t wear.

lovelyupnorth · 10/08/2019 15:47

Took 7 outfits each. Bought shampoo & conditioner and sun cream out there.

It’s pretty easy.

SirJamesTalbot · 10/08/2019 15:48

I literally count out my clothes and make sure that things go with other things. Things like socks or knickers get rolled up and poked into shoes (wear your biggest pair for travelling) and the rest is folded to within an inch of its life. Having been threatened with a £50 fine from Ryanair whrn my bag admittedly was too bulky (I got away with it as my bag did get in and out of the metal cage - just!) I now underpack if anything.

SirJamesTalbot · 10/08/2019 15:53

@Oblomov19, if you know the airport that you want to fly from, look at the airport website to see what other carriers go from there, perhaps national airlines that aren't as well advertised as UK budget airliness.

This is very odd. Unless your “ one change of clothes “ is a set of ski wear, boots and helmet.

I can get 2 summer dresses, a beach cover up, bikini, rash vest, shorts, 4 tops, running kit and underwear into a compression packing cube that takes up about a third to a half of the space in a carry on bag.

lovelyupnorth · 10/08/2019 16:07

Also you can take a razor in your hand luggage

Are you sure you are not trying to put your stuff into your handbag?
