Skyscanner-am I doing this wrong?

So I keep being told by various friends and family to book flights and accommodation separately. I’ve been looking on sky scanner though and by the time I’ve added luggage to my “£35” per person flight, it’s coming to £300 for 2 adults and a one year old.
I’m confused how people travel cheaply using Skyscanner. Am I doing it wrong?!

Honestly, I struggle to fit one change of clothes in, nightwear & a very modest toiletry bag in one of those cases for an overnight stay and my case is as large a cabin bag as you can get. I'm average clothe sizes

Something in this statement must be mistaken. Our cases are Ryanair standard size (the paid-for cabin bag). I've just gone on hols with the following on one of them:

  • 6 tops.
  • 6 sets of underwear.
  • 4 pairs of shorts.
  • 1 pair shoes.
  • 8 outfits and 2 pairs of shoes for 5YO DD.
  • Other bits and bobs like chargers, soap, toothbrushes etc.

My case dimensions:. 46x33cm, 17cm depth.

Don't the compression bags make everything creased? Great for underwear/nightwear though👍. I still think I'd struggle to fit in:

I thought there wasn't room in the overhead lockers for everyone to take one of these cases. Anyway, great if it works for you.

Awaits glares at airport next week with hand AND hold luggage

Whoever you decide to travel with, double check their atol / abta registration number. Some companies have moved geographic location and "forgot" to update their online details, leaving customers vulnerable. I'm slightly wary of very small airlines who only have a few planes, as they have no contingency should they have technical issues. But then, I'm in SE England, so am somewhat spoiled in terms of airport / airline choice.

Ah well, that's it - it's tidgy. 55 X 40 X 20 here.

Ryanair limit the numbers and charge for locker bags. Their included bag must fit under the seat. I think other airlines just put any excess in the hold.

I still don't understand how you fit all you need into a cabin case if your trip is more than say a week. Are you washing stuff when you're away?

To answer this- yep we do hand luggage only with two kids for two weeks. Wash while away or we'd be lugging mountains around with our mucky pups.

No.

I do one load of washing halfway through a 2 week break, but can get enough in hand luggage for up to 9 days away without doing washing, if going somewhere warm/hot.

To me, it seems more of a hassle /inconvenience to take enough clothes to last 2 weeks than it is to do one load of washing in 14 days. Don't think I even own enough clothes to go 15/16/17 days without washing anything anyway (14 day break and day or so before/after plus what you wear on the days you go and come back).
It's nice to just be able to grab your bags and go when you arrive, makes it easier to take public transport and means you can walk to your accommodation as long as it's around a 15/ 20 minutes walk or less from the station/bus stop. Have seen people struggling with massive suitcases that they can hardly lift and that just looks like creating extra hassle and stress for yourself.

Depends which country and where you stay obviously, but most hotels offer a laundry service, self catering apartments with a washing machine are fairly common and most cities have laundromats.

@Oblomov19 That's because (as posted previously) the data Skyscanner use is cached data from previous searches and so can be up to 15 days out of date. Also annoying when you look at the whole month view and there are lots of dates missing, so you have to search for them individually. That's one of the reasons I prefer Google Flights, you can load the whole month view and it almost instantly loads the price for every single day, you just scroll down for the following month etc.

The 'Everywhere' option on Skyscanner is still the best option for at least getting ideas and seeing what the cheapest destinations are from a specific airport. I then make a list of options and switch to Google Flights for the current prices, price tracking alerts etc..

Thank you Butter and St James, I took on board what you've said and we are now booked to go to Latvia - Riga! Grin
