Absence from school fines

Hi. Daughter is in yr 8 and has gone on holiday with her dad and Nan for 10 days. Will I be fined £60 per day? Help. Worried about how much this fine will be?

In my LA it’s £60 per parent if 10 sessions (half days) are missed per term or six week consecutive period. Fines aren’t issued until the end of the term. We were away over Christmas and I am expecting the fine to arrive at the end of this term after Easter. It’s not per day.

Southend Borough apparently. Although haven’t seen letter

Thanks for the feedback :)

I did. Filled in absence form and wrote letter detailing exceptional circumstances that were denied. I’d have said no but they’ve taken her Caribbean for 10 days. What an experience for her 😬

Ah - thought the £60/session was a lot.

I tell a lie. Gateshead is £120 per parent for period of absence. The only person I know to get a fine had more than £60 so I assumed it was per day.

hartof · 10/03/2019 21:19

We took DD (primary) out for a week in October, we got the fine 4 weeks later £120 total

Wolfiefan · 10/03/2019 21:19

Exceptional circumstances or a holiday? Holidays aren’t authorised in term time. How could you not know that?

JRMisOdious · 10/03/2019 21:19

You will be fined then, yes. Would have thought they should have detailed the penalty when your request was denied though?

thefirst48 · 10/03/2019 21:19

Well your friend is a bullshitter says £50 fine for Southend.

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:20

Of course I know holidays aren’t allowed on term time

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:21

I can’t believe that fine is right. Everything I’m reading on site says £60

But she’s gone anyway?
Confused

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:23

Holiday was booked and paid for in December. There’s no way I could have said no to her not going to the caribbean for ten days :/ call me a soft touch

Google your local authority's penalty notice code of conduct. Ours is £60 per parent per child - for the period of absence not per day.

If the school is quick they'll send the paperwork to the council as soon as you're back, but I can take anything from a couple of weeks to months until you will receive a letter regarding the fine.

They may decide not to issue it to you, but they can do.

Then you need to suck up the fine!

Wolfiefan · 10/03/2019 21:32

Yep. You’re a soft touch. And if you knew holidays weren’t allowed in term time then why was it booked and paid for anyway? You can’t whinge about a fine when your child has skived off school for a Caribbean holiday. Hmm

thefirst48 · 10/03/2019 21:34

I'd rather pay a £60 fine then thousands more for a holiday term time. Your ex has taken her away so if both parents get a fine then get him to pay both fines, simple!

thefirst48 · 10/03/2019 21:34

Holiday not in term time I meant.

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:36

I’ll just get him to pay it.

anniehm · 10/03/2019 21:51

We got away with it for a wedding (the school said close family on the return to the council though it was a friend!)

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/03/2019 22:18

Pottering it’s £120 everywhere but reduced to £60 if you pay quickly.

Knitclubchatter · 10/03/2019 22:25

i hope she has a great time.
pay the fine and i hope you get some beautiful photo's with her smiling from ear to ear.
the experience will be worth it.

continuallychargingmyphone · 10/03/2019 22:25

Back off wolife, it is not the OP who had taken her Hmm
