I am just back from ours, and already thinking about next year. Would love to hear what people liked/disliked about theirs, especially those who went shorthaul for 4k or ideally very much less!

Crete, in Kissamos near Chania.
It was lovely, so hot. The sea was very safe & warm.
Went b&b at the Aphrodite Beach Hotel.
Ate out every night quite cheaply, great food.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 02/09/2018 19:54

crete is definitely on my shortlist, thank you. good to hear that you can eat out cheaply.

Menorca - beautiful Island, weather was fantastic, beaches are lovely, it was so relaxing.

We had a villa with a private pol and an amazing view, as we were a large family group with three teens. But you can get a apartment with the same views and a shared pool for much less.

LaContessaDiPlump · 03/09/2018 11:26

Belgium - a week of mixed camping and staying in a holiday village with free pool and softplay (plus it's by a beach and woodlands). I don't think we broke £1500 all told, even including ferry and fuel. Really good for little kids :)

insancerre · 03/09/2018 11:29

Menorca
I've been 3 times in the last 2 years and I'm going again next year
We get a Villa with a pool
It's so friendly and I would move there tomorrow if I could

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 03/09/2018 11:46

thanks all. It's DC2's turn to manage the wish list this year, and her priorities are to have access to a pool (shared would be fine) and be very near a beach. If it was up to me I'd be hiking in Bavaria but there's no chance of selling that one until it's my turn again.

Paleokastritsa in Corfu. Beautiful. Also loved Menorca when the kids were younger.

Hoppinggreen · 03/09/2018 11:52

Funnily enough we went to Bavaria
No hiking but we did have a shared pool and plenty of “beaches” on the lakes and river - in fact it was better as you didn’t get salty and sandy
The DC loved it, loads to do

runsmidgeOMG · 03/09/2018 14:21

We drove to campsite lanterna in istria, croatia !!!!
Loved every moment. 10 nights for 400 euros ! Everything on site from restaurants, supermarkets, pools to kids clubs, we had a lovely pitch right by the sea !!! Lovely surrounding areas too.

buttermilkwaffles · 03/09/2018 15:40

@TheTurnOfTheScrew Hiking in Bavaria sounds right up my street. Maybe you could compromise by finding somewhere with a pool and near a beach that also has mountains nearby with nice walks? It won't be Alpine scenery of course but at least then you wouldn't just be limited to a sitting on the beach/by the pool holiday?

InTheRoseGarden · 04/09/2018 08:09

@LaContessaDiPlump Would you share the name of the holiday park? It sounds perfect for next year Smile

Sarande Albania has beaches, good supermarkets plenty of hiking to be done and is cheap. Ksamil is beautiful and not to far from the ferry port.

juneau · 04/09/2018 12:44

We had a brilliant week in the Lakes - dry all week apart from one morning - and we did masses of walking. Highly recommended.

lolaflores · 04/09/2018 12:48

Litohoro. Mount Olympus in northern Greece. Stunning landscape. Agean sea with fab beaches. Loads to see archaeology site museums. Thessalonika us fascinating busy city. Loved it. Locals were so nice. I ended up needing a doctor and everyone was helpful and very kind.
Greece never disappoints

mrsnec · 04/09/2018 12:59

We had a city break in Thessaloniki and I absolutely loved it. Beautiful city. Prefer it to Athens.

People all so vibrant and lovely.

dosie · 04/09/2018 13:05

Lacontessadiplump please can you let me know the name too sounds amazing. Thanks

TheFairyCaravan · 04/09/2018 13:11

We went to the same hotel in Menorca that we went to last year. We won’t return to the hotel again but we’ll definitely go back to Menorca.

We’re off to La Palma in 3 weeks so we’ll see how that one goes.

LaContessaDiPlump · 04/09/2018 15:18

All done Dosie, but autocorrect decided to call you Rosie Confused sorry!

Awks · 04/09/2018 15:46

Road trip in Halkidikis is northern Greece. Just me and dh. We hired a car and will have stayed in 6 different resorts and hotels during the week. Haven't been to Greece for years but this holiday has been amazing and very cheap as we only booked the first night in advance. We have had 5 star corporate to today's which is small, pretty and family run with pomegranate trees growing next to the pool. Off to Thessaloniki tomorrow then fly home Friday

LittleMissedTheSunshine · 04/09/2018 15:51

Northern Spain (Costa Brava) in early June.

Very cheap, but it rained 3 days out of 7 which put a dampener on things.

As far as I'm concerned if it's not hot and sunny, it's not a holiday so we'll be going further south and east next year (have to go early june due to school hols).

Stillwishihadabs · 04/09/2018 16:41

Kos lovely island, beautiful beach, good food. Did rent a boat for the second week (dream yachts if anyone wants to know) about 4-5k all in, but without the Yacht more like £2.5. Highly recommend. Also have done Crete equally lovely

Bimgy85 · 04/09/2018 16:48

Thinking about next years holiday, didn't go on one this year. I want somewhere like areas of Spain with nice ports, places to walk around, stalls, lots of people but no lager louts, but lots of nice restaurants and cute bars...

Is Crete very nice? I don't want somewhere too quiet, I don't mean in terms of noise I mean I want somewhere with lots of people , understand? 😂
