Going shorthaul for a week on Wednesday, was only planning on taking a cabin bag each but have just noticed the small print that the baggage allowance is only 6kg each - that’s nothing, isn’t it? Shock

Adding 20kg hold bags each would add another £200 to the cost and we’re skint. Sad

I know I’m an idiot for not checking the small print but we all managed with cabin cases last year so didn’t think it would be an issue until I saw that. Do they actually weigh your cabin bags?

Do you need 20kgs each or could you just book one or two cases? (Not sure how many of you are going)

MissDemelzaCarne · 13/08/2018 15:36

There’s 4 of us going and I was going to spend £100 on 2 x 20kg to GP in the hold then realised that the cases I’d be packing are the ones that I’ve previously taken in the cabin! I’d be happy to keep them with me (and save the £100) but they’d be bound to weigh more than 6kg.

I've never had carry on luggage weighed with Thomas Cook so you might be alright if you go over. They are stingy with luggage allowance...their standard hold allowance is only 15kg per person which I think is terrible.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/08/2018 15:39

If you turn up with anything more than an average sized bag they will check - so if your bags are cabin sized cases then the chances are they’ll weigh them.

MissDemelzaCarne · 13/08/2018 15:44

Oh fuck, DH and DS’ rucksacks will be over 6kg to so I’m going to have to fork out £200 that I just haven’t got to put everything in the fucking hold aren’t I, whilst the overhead luggage lockers will presumably be empty? Hmm

What a fucking rip off and what an idiot I am for not having realised what bandits they are BEFORE I booked. Angry

Thomas Cook can be very strict on this. On my last flight with them in Feb they were weighing people's bags at the departure gate and anything over 6kg they were making people take stuff out.

SealSong · 13/08/2018 15:48

Borrow one large suitcase, fill that to 20 kg, book that in to the hold, then take the rest in 6kg hand baggage. That way you're only paying for one case.

MissDemelzaCarne · 13/08/2018 15:49

Thanks SealSong, it’s better to know in advance. DH is not going to be impressed, he’s just lost his job, hence why we’d hoped to travel cheaply. Sad

It’s not really a rip off, it tells you when you book you don’t have to go ahead! I appreciate it’s frustrating that you didn’t notice but they are aren’t a scheduled airline so do things differently.

bblondemoment · 13/08/2018 16:07

Flew with Thomas Cook in May and they weighed hand luggage at checkin and checked again at gate for ones the looked like they'd escaped being weighed previously. I actually remarked to my husband that they were one the stricter airlines we've flee with recently with regards to hand luggage

lovelyupnorth · 13/08/2018 16:09

flew thomas cook in January - long haul (not sure that makes a difference) didn't check any of our hand luggage.

loobywench · 13/08/2018 16:14

I flew with them last month. They didn't check ours and didn't see them check anyone's hand luggage at all.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 13/08/2018 16:18

I've flown with them five times - they've checked on four occasions and not on one.

Ohyesiam · 13/08/2018 16:26

Flew recently on a budget airline saw one young woman wearing what must have been half of her wardrobe which she took off in the aisle and put in a big plastic bag from her tiny hand luggage! She had peeled off a couple of layers in the loo, but said it was too cramped to continue.
You could try that as a family op.

Icequeen01 · 13/08/2018 16:32

We are in Cyprus at the moment and flew with Thomas Cook. None of us had our hand luggage weighed but we were under the 20kg in all 3 of our cases for the hold so not sure if that was why?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/08/2018 16:35

They’re more likely to weigh your luggage if you have a flight only booking. If you’re on a package and have hold luggage included you are less likely to try to get a case in the cabin. If you’ve only bought the flight they’ll check.

Fairenuff · 13/08/2018 16:37

You could risk it but if you get charged at the airport it will be a lot more. I think you're going to have to pay the £200.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/08/2018 16:43

It’s £10 per kilo each way if you’re over your allowance on check in

MissDemelzaCarne · 13/08/2018 16:48

I’m tempted Ohyesiam Grin but DS, who has AS, gets stressed flying anyway so I don’t want to do anything to add to that.

DH is at a job interview as we speak, if he gets the job I’m spending his first paycheque on the baggage!

I flew with a budget airline recently with DS who also has ASD. I telephoned their special assistance line as I was worried we would go over our luggage allowance as DS has special assistance aids, they gave us 2 free bags after I explained the problem. They were very understanding - that might be something you could consider if you have luggage due to DS disability?

noenergy · 13/08/2018 17:24

Those of u who have had your hand luggage weighed, is it just on outbound or on return as well?

We r flying out on a different budget airline that has a 10kg limit but returning on Thomas Cook so getting worried now. 6kg is not much, my trolley case weighs about 3kg.

MissDemelzaCarne · 13/08/2018 18:26

That’s good to hear crazycatlady but DS has no additional equipment.

DH doesn’t think he’s got the job so I’ve booked 3 x 20kg cases only for £150, for the DCs and I. DH will have to wear all his clothes Grin

Thanks for all the input.

noenergy both ways for us most times...

LoniceraJaponica · 13/08/2018 22:22

“their standard hold allowance is only 15kg per person which I think is terrible.”

You can pack loads and still be under 15k. What on earth do you take that weighs more than that?
We flew with Jet2 this year. Their allowance is 22kg. I was pretty generous with my packing, and my luggage was still under 12kg.

“so I’ve booked 3 x 20kg cases only for £150, for the DCs and I. DH will have to wear all his clothes”

Can’t you spare some room in a couple of cases for him to pack his stuff in? Our 3 cases together probably only weighed 36 kg in total. That would leave another 14kg spare, based on 20kg each.
