Had been looking at a fly drive around Quebec, Montreal etc but some rather hefty unexpected bills are clipping our wings this year and so we're now looking at Europe. We've done villa holidays before in South of France, various locations on mainland Italy (and also Sardinia and Sicily), Spain, Greece etc and so now we're thinking perhaps Croatia? If you have been, what did you like / what would you recommend?

We are a family of 4 (kids will be 14 and 16 by the time the holiday comes around). They enjoy some sightseeing but not wild about too many dusty cathedrals. They will happily do places of historical interest however (particularly if they relate to stuff they have studied at school). We are not uber beachy (probably would go a couple of times in a week), but do like a well appointed villa with a pool. They also like adrenaline type outdoorsy stuff and appreciate beautiful scenery.

(and there has to be wifi)

£10k?!!!

how long are you going for?!

user187656748 · 19/02/2018 10:55

You can have my house for the week for £10k

hmcAsWas · 19/02/2018 10:55

A week.

I was hoping to spend less than that (so we have money over for a week's domestic holiday in the UK) but we do like a premium villa. Its a holiday after all

Hmmm - I might try this thread again without the £10K in the title as I can see how it is going to go Grin

Am really after posters first hand experiences of Croatia

I believe Jaywick in Essex is worth a visit.

MyHairyToe · 19/02/2018 11:00

I think that might be wise OP!

I went to Split which was really nice. Great weather. Stayed near a forest/national park and went on walks through it every day. Little beaches all along the edge so we would stop for a bit then carry on. This was before children and the holiday was less than £1k for the 2 of us. We got an air BnB apartment rather than a villa though. Loads of great restaurants some touristy stuff too. You can go on boat trips to other towns or islands but we couldn't be bothered! I would go back definitely xx

hmcAsWas · 19/02/2018 11:03

Thanks Chiki (finally, a constructive post!)

Croatia is beautiful.
Focus on its national parks/islands and sandy beaches. Between Split and Dubrovnik is where you want to hang.

Don't be talked into Pula in the North. There's just nothing going on there but stony beaches.

Scabbersley · 19/02/2018 11:10

I got roasted asking for ideas for less than 5k so I don't think this will go well.
Seriously though if I'd had 10k it would have been easy to book a week away!!

hmcAsWas · 19/02/2018 11:10

Thanks Vanguard, from my early googling Split, Dubrovnik and Zagreb came up as must sees

Honestly there are hundreds of beautiful villas in Croatia for far less than 10k a week.

hmcAsWas · 19/02/2018 11:14

Sorry to hear that Scabbersley, fortunately I have a skin as thick as rhino hide so a roasting doesn't bother me Smile (as long as I also get some constructive suggestions re Croatia).

I guess I put the £10K in because posters like to ask what the budget is and I didn't want to rule out a cruise (although I am not really convinced about cruises)

Of course you can do it for under 10k. Many people do all the time. Hmm

theredjellybean · 19/02/2018 11:15

We went to Croatia last year with neilson. Croatia was beautiful, national Park climbing was fab, sailing excellent, people friendly but the evenings we ate out were not cheap, think London prices for dinner.

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/02/2018 11:15

I really wouldn't bother op, a £9.5k holiday will mean you are really slumming it.

hmcAsWas · 19/02/2018 11:15

"Honestly there are hundreds of beautiful villas in Croatia for far less than 10k a week"

Am sure there are - but just want to narrow down the search a bit to an area which will be interesting with lots to see and do

We are going to Croatia and Slovenia for 5 weeks next summer. We are hiring a car and staying in very nice airBnBs. Some days city breaks, some are on the beach, some are in the beautiful mountains. I can't wait. There are 4 of us and we should be able to do it for around £1,500 including flights, accommodation, food (we shop/cook our own food most of the time and some trips to restaurants) for 5 weeks.

theredjellybean · 19/02/2018 11:17

You probably wouldn't fancy neilson as it's very sports based, with big emphasis on water based sports. But our teenagers have loved these holidays for yrs and neilson are re furbing the Croatia hotel and adding big new pool.

Scabbersley · 19/02/2018 11:17

Well we looked at staying near Cavtat which looked perfect

Riverside2 · 19/02/2018 11:19

a week?!

jeez, if it wasn't for Dump I'd say make proper use of the money and go to California.

but rhino hide or no - £10k?!!!

and you have some unexpected bills....is that what you have for a week holiday after paying the unexpected bills?

would you like an outer London flat, quite nice, near to lovely restaurants (esp local Italian owned by supernice family, honestly food is so good you could eat every meal there for a week), excellent internet, good connections to town and to Hertfordshire, not far from a lovely green walk...?

Because I would take your £10k happily if you want to borrow the flat for a week.

Dubrovnik is amazing, but crowded and expensive.

I prefer Istria - check out Rovinj and Opatija. Beautiful places.

whifflesqueak · 19/02/2018 11:22

We like it because we’re not wild about sandy beaches. Croatia has lots of beautiful pebbly ones.

It’s nice. I didn’t do much when we were there because I was bedbound with the most awful virus. Shame. Might go back some day.

I imagine you’d get a lot of change out of 10k.

RuskBaby · 19/02/2018 11:23

We loved Cavtat, gorgeous place and only a short boat or road trip to Dubrovnik. The people & food were lovely.
