Dh and I are going to cardiff in 3 weeks time for a few days for our wedding anniversary. Does anyone have any recommendations of places to visit or things to do, only know there is great shops and cafes but would like to do something other than shop and eat Also good places for eating out. Thanks xx

Oh I love these reminiscing threads...I was in University Hall, on the 4th floor of the tower, with a fab view of Cardiff (legend had it that the tower had been condemned and had a 4 foot swing in high winds).

Used to go to Jive Hive sometimes on a Friday but Friday night (indie night) in the Union was my night - the main night club bit was the Hanging Gardens in those days, though it changed the year dh graduated and went all industrial looking, with big fake pipes and stuff (we had plastic vines). The bar was the Tafarn and there was a smaller downstairs bar/club called The Finistere.

Saturday night I generally went to the Square Club (yes, upstairs) or maybe The Philharmonic.

And we used to drink in The Angel a lot.

Sorry, Jive Hive on a Wednesday, not Friday.

Drank in the Claude sometimes. Also the Woody. Gassy Jacks was after my time, I think.

No, I was never anything 'important' in the Union (they were all nobs). Wrote for Gair Rhydd sometimes. Never went to the Union on a Saturday (I was far too dark and purple )

I lived in Adamsdown in my 2nd year - Comet Street. Roath at the start of my 3rd year - Moy Road (the very first house, by the bridge - no.2) but then had a falling out with my best friend and her pyscho boyfriend and ended up in a University owned house in Colum Road in Cathays for the last bit of my 3rd year.

Then I lived with dh (though he wasn't then, obviously) in Dogfield Street (Cathays) and worked at the WJEC for a while.

Obviously later execs were not nobs, califrau

Have been going to Cardiff since I was a baby & recall C&A from shopping with my grandma! It had changed loads, my mum says it looks totally different but better than when she lived there!

The Park Plaza was being built in my final yr - it looked nice!

I lived in Talybont (walked along Colum Road every day & got soaked loads!) & Mackintosh Place in Roath. Graduated in 2005.

I think Cardiff was a fab place for uni. Miss it.

This is making me very nostalgic! I lived in Colum Road too - 45 - for a year. DH lived just round the corner from the Woody, Cogan Terrace. I remember the plastic vines over the booths in the Hanging Gardens, and Lunch in a Bun in the Buttery!

fruittea · 03/05/2007 23:05

...and we got married in the registry office on Park Place!

PeachesMcLean · 03/05/2007 23:07

The Park Plaza is a new hotel on Greyfriars Road, just along from the New Theatre. Very nice lunch in there, as I can testify. I wish I'd gone to uni in Cardiff, can't share any of these stories.

Very good of Beadmum to start this thread.

OMG! Someone who remembers Deep Dave! Got to go and pick the kids up but will come back to this thread this evening - loving it !

Can't actually remember what number Colum Road I lived at (I am getting old...) Had forgotten the Buttery.

Oh those plastic vines...

Califrau - studied French (and Italian and Music for first) - so was also on a 4 year course!

In the 1st year lived at Tal y Bont (it's very posh now, and HUGE! - I work not far from there now!), 2nd year lived next door but one from Ramones on Salisbury Road - they've changed the Karaté club into a Tesco Metro (scandalous!), 3rd year was in France, but 4th year lived in Cartwright Court (behind Mackie Place) DH lived in Moy Road - number 23 ... from 1988 until we moved in together in 1994! Needless to say I spent a lot of time there! When we moved in together, we lived on Gordon Road (behind Richmond Road, by the mansion house) ... then we got all respectable and bought a house together in Penarth - behind the Billybanks!

I was also choir on Monday, Rock night on Tuesday, Jive Hive on Wednesday - out to the Philly on Thursday ... then was always skint, so didn't go to Hanging Gardens at the weekend!

Memories (bursts into song ....)

Drive past all my old haunts everyday on my way to and from work ... students look too young to be out - and the union still looks exactly the same from the outside - haven't been in for years.
