Lanzarote or Menorca?

Natalie2900 · 09/02/2018 19:06

Hi,

Hoping to get some advice.

I have a family holiday booked in Menorca on 19th May. I am now worried it won't be hot enough for us with pools etc.

I am now looking at lanzarote. I have 10 days to change the holiday!

Has anybody been to either of these places on holiday during april/may?

Any advice on which one is best? and the temp etc?

Thankyou. xxx

For the more upmarket parts you need Costa Adeje in Tenerife and playa Blanca is nice in Lanzerote.
Look at playa del duque in Tenerife and princess yaiza in playa Blanca.
Both really nice.
My choice would be lanzerote p.yaiza is amazing for kids.

holycityzoo · 10/02/2018 10:33

Sorry lanzarote Blush

superram · 10/02/2018 10:33

We get a heated pool in lanzarote, unless the height of summer-it’s just much pleasanter. Texas rancho is a zoo and small water park-it’s nice although food is expensive.

Aragog · 10/02/2018 10:41

We've been to lanzarote for winter sun and the hotels and villas we've stayed in have had heated pools making them all totally useable. We've always stayed in Playa Blanca plus had a car for venturing further afield.

Not been to Menorca but have been to
Majorca around that time too. Often a little
Cooler but have had some gloriously warm days too. Again we always have a heated pool that time of year. Mind, last time we went was a May half term and it was really quite hot.

Lanzagrotty - no thanks

I have been to Menorca before in June about 20 years ago, I remember it being more rural but could have changed by now, it was really hot with big waves in the sea

Personally I'd go to Majorca if I had to choose a Spanish Island, you could stay in Alcudia which is a nice old town but still set up as a resort and do day trips to Palma etc

We went to Menorca on 20th May last year for 8 nights. It was lovely weather, warm and sunny. The pools were cold though, I didn’t get in but DS was happy enough in the shallow pirate play pool. The sea temp was ok for me.
Menorca is beautiful.

LizardMonitor · 10/02/2018 10:51

I am very snobby about holidays and do not understand the ‘Lanzagrotty’ thing at all.
We really enjoyed Playa Blanca in Feb one year. Didn’t go to Costa Teguise though.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 10/02/2018 11:01

We are booked to go to Lanzarote in May (Playa Blanca), have been before, really don't understand the Lanzagrotty snobbery! We always stay in villas (5 of us, so hotels are tricky) and have booked a 4 bed 4 bath villa with hot tub and heated pool for £1200. Flights are fairly cheap too. Lots of nice restaurants within walking distance. There is a waterpark and we went up the volcano last time which was fun.
We have been to Menorca before and it was lovely too. I imagine it might be a little colder, so you could check if the pool was heated.
Our worst holiday was Majorca in October. Freezing pools, rain, full of very loud cringy Brits, all restaurants boasting British food and showing British sport. Never again!

AlpacaLypse · 10/02/2018 11:02

I liked Lanzarote, yes Puerto del Carmen is grotty and there are a couple of other enclaves of Brits Abroad. But our apartment in Costa Teguise was lovely. There were perfectly decent restaurants within walking distance. We hired a car, the roads are excellent and very empty, well worth it for a family as the bus excursions mount up and also with a car you can stop and go with children as you like. If you're into modern art you'll love the roundabout sculptures by Cesar Manrique, also his house and the garden. There are good value combined tickets so you can visit a different place each day. The volcano tour was interesting and hopefully by now they'll have finished the museum - it was being upgraded.

AlpacaLypse · 10/02/2018 11:03

Menorca did have a vaguely decent zoo I remember, and some interesting archaeology, and a couple of good castles.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 10/02/2018 11:04

We went to Tenerife every Easter for 12 years. The weather was always hot but often cloudy. The unheated pool was fine and nice and refreshing. We never swam in the sea as I never liked the beaches. Tenerife has a great zoo. Went to Menorca in September once and it was actually quite cold on some days so I’d only go there in summer.

AlpacaLypse · 10/02/2018 11:06

DPs highlight of the Lanzarote trip however was a gloriously camp drag show though! So cheap and tinselly it was brilliant.

Aragog · 10/02/2018 11:07

The 'Lanzagrotty' thing comes from years and years ago. Most people who use the term these days often haven't actually been there or have only been to the very busy crowded brits type resort in peak season. Anyone who's really been in recent years outside those one or two resorts will know it's nothing like the reputation at all in most of the island, and actually a lovely place.

Awks · 10/02/2018 11:12

Been to all three early summer and lanzarote is my favourite. There are some touristy bits but they're not that grotty and lanzarote doesn't deserve the grotty tag. Tenerife is also nice and both those islands should be warm. Though pools are always too cold for me even August!

Won't it host you a fortune to swap resorts?

Natalie2900 · 10/02/2018 11:29

Yes I was going to say this.. why lanzagrotty? This worries me. I’m probably
Over thinking that now. But I think I’m deffo going for the Canary Islands. For guaranteed heat.
Now got to decide between Tenerife and Lanzarote! Maybe I’ll change the thread name 😂

Luckily we paid £50 to change our holdoay entirely 80 days before we go. We are on 94 days I think so have a fortnight to change our minds.
We are with Thomas cook.

Not much info on Lanzarote but you're definitely unlikely to get warm pool or sea water in May unless it's unseasonably warm this year. The weather will be lovely if a bit windy but it's slightly too early in the year for swimming. And Menorca is a very quiet island, beautiful old megalithic ruins that won't excite a little one, nice beaches and that's about it. Majorca, on the other hand, has plenty more going for it aside from beaches, the capital, Palma, is really nice for sightseeing and shopping (not so likely with children, I know), there are places to visit and eat at and a very good aquarium nearby, as well as little villages along the North-Western coast that are truly lovely. The resorts in the Northern part of the island are very family-oriented but a little unexciting for adults although I would recommend renting a car to move around and change the scenery, it's the best way to enjoy the island. Not windy at all, Minorca really is as it's very flat but Majorca has a mountain range running along the North-Western coast (where the nice little villages are located) that gives it a much lovelier climate, especially in winter.
All in all, if you want to jump in the pool in May, better try the Canaries but for variety check out Majorca instead of Minorca.

CarriMarie · 10/02/2018 11:45

We're going to Menorca on 19th May, our villa has heated pool, have been that time of year before and weather really good but not too hot.

If you go Lanzarote would recommend Playa Blanca, is near to Papagayo which is one of the only decent sandy beaches we found there, there were loads to choose from on Menorca.

We found much more for children to do on Menorca, very family friendly.

LizardMonitor · 10/02/2018 11:52

We swam in the sea in Lanzarote in Feb.

The hotel had one heated pool and one unheated.

Strongvegetables · 10/02/2018 11:55

We went the first week of may and it was FREEZING. Most of the shops/restaurants were shut. We love menorca and go every year but that year was awful!

LizardMonitor · 10/02/2018 12:00

Where, StringVeg? Menorca?

JosieSand · 10/02/2018 12:02

May is hit and miss in Menorca.

You'll need a heated pool anywhere in the med in May.

Cyprus is gorgeous in May.

Strongvegetables · 10/02/2018 12:33

Sorry yes, calan Bosch in Menorca. It’s our fave place. We stay at viva menorca but it’s just too cold. I had to buy warm clothes!

MsHarry · 10/02/2018 12:42

Shame because Menorca is much nicer than Lanzarote imo. Went to Menorca in early May and pool was too cold.Went to Lanzarote in Jan and pools were freezing. Went to Algarve in April and pools were freezing, empty and beautiful but for a reason!!
